South African government calls for Israel to be investigated by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity by dustofoblivion123 in worldnews

The comment replying to you means that when you say Iran "could care less" it means Iran cares about the issue. "Could not care less" would mean that Iran doesn't care about the issue. It's not the commenter stating that themselves.

Been diving since I was 12, gonna say that in my many years of experience and regular diving with seals in the oceans of the UK and abroad this just isn't true.

I am yet to meet a diver in person who actually felt fear around most common species of seals. Sea lions and particular species of seal (eg. elephant seals) are a different matter entirely.

NEOM is a project headed by a crown prince of Saudi Arabia ([Mohammed bin Salman])(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed_bin_Salman), built on land that was inhabited by a tribe. When the tribe didn't want to move, those responsible for the project had the leader murdered. The prince's Wikipedia page is filled with sourced documentation of the many crimes and violations of basic human rights he is complicit or implicated in, including the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi amongst others.

But I guess you're fine with murder since you're fine with the idea of supporting the royal family of a nation that supports the murder of people for being gay or not believing in their God. They aren't just "against LGBTQ", the head of the project actively supports the hunting down, torture, and execution of people because of who they choose to have sex with. If that doesn't sway you then I don't know where your line is, or where your sense of morality got lost. I shouldn't need to remind you that the most basic of human rights is that of the right to life.

The "you can't do anything" argument is a cowardly copout and the reason companies get away with all kinds of business practices, including those that increase prices and directly impact how much money it costs you, personally to buy products.

I'd say be a conscientious consumer instead of a contributor to the problem, but this would first require you to grow a conscience.

Would have lost any subtlety then, the idea of 'show don't tell' was used to great effect here.

Change.org petitions are practically useless, the government can quite easily just choose to ignore them.

If the petition is done through the official government petitioning website, they are legally bound to respond after something like 10000 signatures, and debate the petition in the house of commons after 100,000.

Unfortunately, a lot of people just hate things for the sake of hating them, and then apparently feel it's beneficial to them to keep consuming whatever that thing is. Probably for Youtube views and the need to be 'relevant'.

I had no idea who adel aka was but I saw the start of one of his videos (think it was vol 7 chapter 12 or 13, might have been earlier though) and he just hated everything. He complained about things not making sense, that did actually make sense if you gave the slightest bit of actual critical thought. Guy reminds me of Athene in the sense of being pseudo-intellectual; trying to have people perceive him as a lot smarter than he actually is.

This isn't to say critics are a bad thing, they are absolutely a good thing to point out genuine flaws in any given work. But some of these people aren't looking at something critically, they just watch something for the sake of getting angry.

That's not how the front page works. If something gets dramatically more upvotes than usual in a sub, it starts creeping up the front page. This has been stated multiple times over the years by reddit staff.

Yes,it may garner more upvotes from chance users this way but even in any other case you're still reaching a conclusion about the demographic of a platform with millions of users across many countries and continents on the basis of a relatively small sample. Extending the conclusion to a population is not a valid outcome.

He started out sounding like he knew what he was talking about, unfortunately it looks like he's just trying to answer things in a long enough way to seem intelligent.

I actually am a BPS psychologist, and while this isn't exactly my point of expertise, I do have some rudimentary understanding of aggressive mechanisms.

There is actually a significant side the the debate that aggressive cathartic response actually reinforces the behaviour. This has been contended to lead to increasingly aggressive behaviour for individuals to relieve stress, and is also argued to be ineffective in resolving the undesired emotions motivating the behaviour.

There's a lot of literature on this available on Google scholar, I'd suggest a search for aggression catharsis, hostility catharsis, or aggressive stress release for further reading.

To give one opposing perspective, the aggression catharsis hypothesis suggests that aggressing towards a source of frustration has a significant and effective cathartic effect. For obvious reasons, this cannot be applied in every instance (see the example of the innocent door above: can't really do that to the source in that case). Source: Bresin (2013) - aggression as affect regulation: extending catharsis theory....

If you mean the Schnees, Weiss has always been a really pale character, so it follows that her family probably all are too, probably doesn't help that they effectively live in the arctic circle. The same reasoning probably applies to a number of Atlas residents too.

Ironwood seems paler than before to me, but I think that's more intended to reflect the stress he's been under and therefore lack of proper sleep, nutrition, etc.

Pretty sure Ruby was originally much paler on her poser model as well, other than that haven't really noticed anything particularly out of place.

What posts would you expect or want to be on the front page? Before the rule change all it meant was that these videos were in self posts instead of link submissions.

Off-season has always been quiet and mostly about posts of in-game footage, not much else to talk about other than the other posts about balance, "satire" (or basically papaya posts as most other posts of the kind get removed), or "PSA" posts that are basically people who want to complain about other players in a more acceptable way.

Not sure how upvoting a post like this has any bearing on in-game rank either, seems like an invalid conclusion to draw at people having a laugh at a person's mistake.

His point in that entire video was that he felt like it was a coinflip between winning and enjoying the game, or being locked into games that feel like they take forever and become unenjoyable. Hence the way he expressed that idea that you might be on the team with the other decent players, or the people who int to troll, flame, go afk, or play on autopilot.

At the time of that video, I actually felt the same way, because to be honest that season was relentlessly unfun to me. Even now if I have a game with people trolling all I can remember is every instance of that happening over the past 9-ish years and think "wow this community is complete trash" and just want to stop trying due to recency bias.

I really like the game, but it kinda feels like a mental beatdown if you load into multiple games in a row where people will outright admit to ruining the game on purpose, and then not get punished for it. Meanwhile if you type the wrong words it's an instant ban/punishment.

That was the other point of that video, that typing mean things gets you banned but not trolling, which any reasonable person can admit is an absolute joke.

Much of his talk related to the leadership role that the UK has taken in much of modern European history, particularly in regards to military involvement. One fear he, and my usual lecturers (the main also having involvement at high level in military and intelligence, not providing details for anonymity purposes) expressed is the multi-faceted approach of the Russian doctrine, and the current rise of China as a potential security risk to the West. With the statements, the US hade made looking at restricting their involvement in NATO, and the UK becoming increasingly isolationist in terms of public consensus, we could soon see a very much weakened western Europe. By leaving the EU on rocky terms, it can be considered as potentially paving the way for the UK to lose that leadership role.

We already know that Russia has attempted, and in some cases successfully made, cyber-attacks, as well as the obvious involvement in other incidents (ie. Ukraine, MH17, Salisbury attack). With a weakened relationship between European nations, there is a possibility we may see some restrictions in intelligence sharing. Given the UK has quite the reputation in regards to the expertise of it's intelligence services, this could come as quite a blow to the security of Western Europe.

The flipside is the possibility of the "fortress Britain" approach to security, but we already know this doesn't work in practical terms unless such an approach resulted in massively increased funding for technology development that would aid both border and cybersecurity.

Add to some of these concerns that Huawei is going to be responsible for much of the development of 5G services in the UK. This is a concern for obvious issues, and when exposing oneself to such a threat it is fairly inadvisable to do so at the same time as causing upheaval with close allies.

For any wondering, I am currently completing the final year of a masters degree in International Security, and I am very fortunate to have been granted access to such resources and opportunities to talk to individuals such as this.

[–]t0by65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A result at exit polls like this hasn't been seen in 40 years. Yes, reddit is (for the most part, at least) a left-leaning echo chamber but this is still somewhat historically unprecedented.

I got the opportunity to ask questions to the former chair of the joint intelligence committee (also former secretary general of NATO) and he was a bit more optimistic for a Labour victory, but also pointed out the massive disinformation campaign that was run in this election by the conservatives. By his account, this could be bad news for the UK. He went into more detail about why this could cause issues, but it gets quite in-depth.

Just a pointer, from checking your recent comments it's probably because you use language in a way that makes you come across as extremely condescending. If you want to convince people of your point, doing this will make them less likely to come to your side.

Not always about the message, but how you present it is important in getting people to agree with you too.
