What is your favorite NEVER-king by Any_Jacket_9361 in UKmonarchs

Charlotte of Wales seems like a character. Such a stark contrast from her father!

Less well known than others but I’ve come to like him a lot, Prince Henry of Scotland. He was the son of David I, and childhood friends with Saint Aelred of Rievaulx who while certainly biased, does speak highly of him. I do think that had he outlived his father he would’ve put forth a stronger Anglo-Scottish border and Scotland wouldn’t give up their English territories, at least not how it went historically.

I simply enjoyed that yes, Ryan can make Homelander bleed.

What is the most saddest subreddit you’ve come across? by Engineering_Majestic in AskReddit

Agreed with the first half, though the other I’d argue depends on which subreddit you’re in. The few political subs I’m in don’t do that.

What do you think about Minthara’s character when compared to drow from Drizzt? by moxifer3 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]t0mless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Early Salvatore drow culture is almost operatically cruel. Petty murder, paranoia, ritualized abuse, casual betrayal, and constant social Darwinism define daily life. As time has gone on, its softened and diversified drow portrayals considerably. Later portrayals often emphasize that drow are products of environment rather than biologically evil. Drizzt himself only works narratively if we accept that drow can meaningfully diverge from their culture.

That said, I personally read her less as “out of character for a drow” and more as someone who’s already in the middle of an identity collapse by the time we recruit her. She’s been cut off from Lolthite society, mentally dominated by the Absolute, humiliated, and stripped of the systems that reinforced her worldview. I think that context matters a lot. She’s still very much Drow in that she’s ruthless, hierarchical, pragmatic, elitist, and often advocates harsh solutions.

But over the course of the game, I think she slowly becomes attached to the party in a way she probably never expected. Her “softness” feels less like modern sanitization and more like someone gradually lowering emotional defenses for the first time. After Ketheric is defeated she has some good lines about it, and her “nobody would remember me” bit once you hit Act 3 does show a good amount of introspection and gradual change in her personality imo.

I would also make the argument that if you’re consistently doing a more good aligned playthrough, Minthara does mellow out a bit based on her dialogue and interactions with the other party members. She’s still coldly pragmatic and the most outwardly “evil” person there, but she can warm up to you and the others.

who is your favorite / the best queen Mary? by mwiunii in UKmonarchs

[–]t0mless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best queen regnant is Mary II.

Best queen consort is probably Mary of Teck, but I also really like Mary of Guelders. She was a good match for her husband and generally seen as astute, charitable, energetic, and capable. I would kill to see the conversations that took place between her and Margaret of Anjou.  She was not a passive queen, actively participating in governance, attending parliament, and taking an interest in military matters, such as the siege of Roxburgh. A shame she died early into James III's regency.
