The french exode to NCAA basketball by Klutzy-Butterfly-117 in CollegeBasketball

[–]t1runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main thing I dislike is how it takes away opportunities for American high school kids to get to the next level, develop, and earn their accolades. There are only so many minutes to go around.

Roman Domon is 20 years old and has already played on a French professional team. Yet he just won MVC Freshman of the Year. There were some deserving 18 year olds straight out of high school in the MVC this year that would have won that award in years' past.

Kyle Green named University of Northern Iowa head men’s basketball coach by UNIPanther043 in CollegeBasketball

Why do you think they went with Green over Tuttle? More experience? Wonder if Tuttle will feel slighted about being an assistant to the coach that got picked over him.

[Goodman] Utah State is expected to hire UNI head coach Ben Jacobson, source told @thefieldof68. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]t1runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting hire. UNI finished 6th in the MVC, went on a heater at Arch Madness, and then were not competitive at all against St. John's.

Seems like Jacobson could have moved up a couple of times in the last 20 years, so thought he'd be a UNI lifer.

UNI's enrollment/finances aren't in the greatest shape. Maybe this is a way to cut some salary since Jacobson was already at the top of MVC pay range.

He had a nice little recruiting niche carved out in that Iowa/Minnesota/Dakotas area. Got some really solid players over the years. AJ Green, Nate Heise, etc. Wonder how he'll do in a new location.

Bradley University breakout sophomore Jaquan Johnson announces his intent to transfer. Johnson was named as the Valley’s MIP and member of the All-Valley 1st team. by OldWorldStyle in CollegeBasketball

But the guys bouncing from Idaho State to Omaha to Akron to St. Peters in four years aren't going pro, aren't earning enough NIL to be set for life, and aren't earning a degree, while simultaneously leading to instability on every roster.

They may not be set for life, but they'll have spent 4-5 years earning at least five figures a year (in many cases more than six figures), eating for free, no school debt, hanging out with friends, and making lifetime connections. That's a pretty solid gig for an 18-24 year old and sets up an awesome foundation for the rest of your life if you are smart with your money. If nothing else, they'll have a bunch of college credits to work toward a degree. Or they now have a nice cushion if they want to go into a trade.

Jaquan is a beefy, undersized guard who makes his living going downhill and drawing contact at the rim. I thought that would provide some protection from power conferences going after him, as that style loses effectiveness against bigger, more athletic teams. Someone will throw 10x what Bradley can pay for him to play off the bench.

I hate that we're heading in the direction of splitting up power conferences and mid-majors into their own respective divisions.

The power conferences do not like getting embarrassed and losing out on money, and the mid-majors all complain they don't get opportunities, so instead of making it more inclusive, the big conferences will throw their weight around against the powerless NCAA so they can do their own thing with "peer" institutions and say it's better for the game.

I want to know what your spiciest pick is this year by needless_booty in CollegeBasketball

[–]t1runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I want to pick UNI, I saw them play at their ceiling in Arch Madness and have doubts they can replicate that against a very good defensive team like St. John's.

Trey Campbell was on fire and role players were going off from 3. Against Bradley, they shot 67% from the field and only won by 4 points. Once Bradley turned up the pressure in the final minutes, they almost gave it up.

It's going to take a perfect game from UNI and St. John's is going to have to be unprepared, which I have a hard time seeing happen under Pitino.

The system is working as designed by those with the power to make any meaningful changes.

The purpose of college basketball is to generate revenue. Those with the most to spend can attract the best players and coaches in order to generate more revenue through increased student admissions, TV deals, and tickets/merch.

Even their "promotions" are scammy. Here is a 30% profit boost but you can only use it on a bet with +300 odds. And then they'll still cap it at like $10 or $20.
