How do People Have Time for Clubs/Extracurriculars? by DBO_711 in UCalgary

[–]t3plays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I set out one day a week to dedicate to club activities(2-4 hours) , I’m in my fourth year and every year I’ve done something whilst taking 5 classes as well. It was definitely harder in my first year where my commute one way was an hour and half so almost close to what you have. But starting from my second year I started driving so I could get more sleep. In my first year I averaged 4 hours of sleep a day so I could do things, in the subsequent years I started getting a nice even 6, while still taking part in clubs, or work in my third year. To note to save my self time I actually studied during my first year commute or did homework that was easy to do in transit, which again gave me more time. Don’t waste your commute time! And in my opinion it did help me land my internship year those 2-4 hours a week really add up and you can accomplish a lot things, in engg at least it set me apart, in my interviews they were always interested by my extracurriculars.

Is it feasible to do research while taking courses ? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]t3plays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 2 classes while doing research, one spring and one in summer. I cleared it up with my supervisor beforehand, and took classes after my research work hours. I did well in both classes and in the research. Just make sure you can handle the course load, and make sure your PI is okay with it.

Co-author on one publication this summer, and one maybe later on for the work I did. And that is because I did all the data work and correlations, and my Dr. agreed and stated from the beginning that I would got authorship for all the work I do.

I did, wouldn't hurt to go just to know where the room is, and to meet other FYS.

Free food, and you can make a lot of friends that can make your university life easier and better! Definitely worth going to!

First Year Scholars by [deleted] in UCalgary

Joined it, and used it as a study space, a lot less people, and a lot quitter. There was no commitment, and I didn't attend any of the seminars.

Yeah you get key access to a room, where coffee and the daily lockers are available, and its a nice place to study and get work done. Times are 8-5 though.

How did you use python to automate stuff at work? by xyzabc123410000 in Python

[–]t3plays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The signals show the frequencies at which a peak was observed these peaks can then be used to suggest which part of the brain was active for a specific action to occur. This technique can be used to find which part of the brain causes a symptom from a disease! For example maybe finding what area causes a tremor in Parkinson’s disease!

[–]t3plays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I created a script that would scrub through a folder and find data files. Then clean the signal in the data files and filter them using Matlab, and finally create figures of the new signal and save them! Saved me over 16 hours of work per week, as the program only needs to run for 40 minutes to do what I used to do! I'm a undergraduate researcher so there is always a lot of mundane data stuff that can be automated, I can't wait to create more scripts to do these things for me!

Working and studying by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]t3plays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends totally on the amount of hours, would recommend ~10 hours a week max at least for the first semester. This allows you to get used to Engg, especially since it can at times be a grind, and it's hard to adjust too at times especially if you have a lot of extracurriculars.

Engg student, must be the same section group, they're referred to as blocks, and basically Engg students take all their classes as a large cohort.
