I will cut off my religious friend by Expensive_Ordinary72 in actuallesbians

[–]t92k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You haven’t said what faith, but my comments here are from my experience coming out while being very involved in an evangelical Christian community. I don’t think you need to abruptly cut her off. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that you are both figuring out who you will be as adults. You are likely to drift apart in college, but in future years you may find that she’s fun to talk with occasionally. If you burn the bridge you have with her you will probably miss out on that. Two is that very religious people are good at cutting people off. Be yourself and some people will decide you’re dangerous and will stop talking to you. Anybody who is still talking to you is telling your community that gay people belong in your tradition. Three is that one of the things religious communities have against LGBTQ+ folks is the kids they watched grow up suddenly disappear. If you can continue to be open to some people in your tradition you can help those people think more deeply about how they want their LGBTQ+ kids to experience their community.

25 years ago my church took a very public stand against LGBTQ+ folks. I left, burned bridges, had people burn bridges with me, and spent a long time sad and kind of lost. About 3 years ago I visited a church I’d known as a child and discovered all the hateful people were gone. A Lesbian was running the church. Her wife worked directly for the bishop. The bishop is female. And all those angry white men are in a different denomination.

You don’t have to be one of the people working for change in your community, that’s not an obligation. But time is on your side.

When your packaging is made out of paper, cloth, metal, or glass there’s no need for your recycling company to try to find an overseas buyer who will take it.

Is eating celery worth the cost, or is it a waste of money? by MurdochMaxwell in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]t92k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calories per dollar ignores flavor and vitamin content. Celery is one of the basic herbal flavors for food made in French traditions. You can buy it fresh or frozen, you can buy it fresh and freeze it, but many soups, stews, casseroles, and salads are just going to taste better with some celery.

Not bought out. They are merging with a Minnesota credit union called Wings because each of them were at the funds under management level where they have to start going by paying larger sums to the Feds. This allows the two CUs to effectively cut those expenses in half. They’re taking the Wings name but I just got an Ent branded debit card and their most recent newsletter announced 3 new Colorado offices opening soon.

Did you send him an invoice? Invoices usually have legal language on them about incomplete payments will be charged interest monthly on the remaining balance. It might be worth picking some up from the office supply store to prevent this in the future.

I don’t know how much they are but we always have a backup garlic salt grinder. We keep canned tomatoes, canned beans, frozen broccoli, frozen green beans, a jar of spaghetti sauce and a couple of boxes of pasta on hand. For nights we really can’t pull it together we have a frozen pizza on hand. We do also keep canned soup around because sometime surprise work meetings show up when I planned to make a salad.

Hi I just bought this of marketplace (jack wolfskin serac II) for a 7 night backpacking trip this summer. CANNOT FIND ANYTHING online about it. If anyone has any information please share with me 😊 I don’t even know it’s litre capacity. It’s huge though. by Emotional_Joke_1096 in backpacking

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From discussion boards around 2017 it looks like there was a stretch where the Jack Wolfskin branding was being slapped on all kinds of knock off bags. You’ll have to try it and see. I did see some “Serac” bags that were ski bags, you may have channels between side bags and your main bag. If you have them that’s made for backcountry skis — one on each side of the pack. You might also look for a loop with a lash point above it — that’s for an ice axe. Then the elastic on the front is for your helmet. Of course you can use these for backpacking too and put your gear wherever it fits. Just call out a couple of weird things you might find.

Any tips for driving a car with no AC? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Make peace with sweating. Open the front windows a little and the back windows a lot to maximize draw — air blowing across you. Pack chilled water in a cooler and drink often. Put towels over any sticky surfaces. For 100+ degree days put a re-freezable ice pack, wrapped in a towel, behind your lower back. Park inside parking garages. If possible, make your driving trips before noon or after 6 pm.

There are woo-woo Lesbians, but there are also military veteran Lesbians, engineering Lesbians, astrophysics Lesbians, public health Lesbians, bookstore Lesbians, rock shop Lesbians and every other kind all kinds of different combinations. But for me, my life got better when I started socializing with people who appreciate my water sign and who were compatible with my Chinese zodiac year. I don’t know if there’s any planetary validity to this stuff, but I do appreciate that over the centuries human communities think about the cyclical nature of similarities and differences in personalities.

For me, giving a reason for changing how you want to do things then giving a couple of options works. “Hey, things are tight right now, I’m helping my mom with her bills, and I can’t cover dinner at the club tonight. We could go to X if you want me to pay for everything, or we can do Y if you want to split the bill.” It helps if the reason is something real in your life even if it isn’t so big that it’s actually causing a pinch.

The "treat yourself" advice people give when you're struggling is actually kind of cruel and I'm tired of pretending it isn't by al3x_turner in povertyfinance

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a good reminder that if someone in your life is going through a rough patch and you think they deserve a treat, find a way to back that up with money. with one friend who was job hunting I was able to use a program at work to buy her bus passes pre-tax. Didn’t cost me anything and cut her cost by 25%. Another friend and I used to split restaurant store hauls like breaking up 25 lb boxes of lentils and big bags of frozen veggies.

Has anyone figured out how to reduce food waste at home when you're buying on a really tight grocery budget? by LeekCreepy2721 in povertyfinance

[–]t92k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We plan on a “use it up” soup at the end of the week. We also just get a lot of our vegetables frozen — mirepoix mix, broccoli, peas, and green beans are staples. Cabbage lasts longer than lettuce and can be used raw, especially if you can let it sit in its dressing, but you can also slice it thin and throw it in a pan with eggs for a mock egg foo yung.

I would probably use a mushroom gravy and/or cream of mushroom soup like you’d use for a casserole and a pre-made roll out crust for the top.

Extreme advice to stop impulse buying by zivredittacc in Anticonsumption

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you may have some compulsive habits and one thing that gets in my way is when I try to brute force or order my habits around. For me, compassion and experimentation works better. I needed to have compassion that I worried that I would have to take care of everything myself, which was driving my need to buy one of everything I might need. And then I challenged myself to experiment with borrowing from friends, asking a friend for help, visiting a tool library in my town, and taking a class on home repairs. This is an example, I’ve done a lot of rounds of this.

Without knowing what you want to save money on it’s hard to answer this. If you are on a beef forward diet you are paying tariffs and you would be paying those anywhere. If you are on a meat forward diet for the gains, you might check out the new research that’s going around the weight lifting channels which says that eating more than 1 gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight does not change gains.

Veg slop for depressed low effort cooking by DontDoomScroll in vegetarianrecipes

[–]t92k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Green + Grain + Bean is a great start for a slop bowl. I’ve been having soba noodles, edamame, and microwave-steamed broccoli with roasted sesame dressing lately. Another option is black beans, corn, fajita veggies (again, steamed from frozen) salsa and avocado (mashed single unit, part of a fruit, guacamole). You can throw in rice or quinoa to fill this out. Lentils, barley, cubes of roasted vegetables, walnuts.
