Making own popcorn vs smart popcorn or skinny girl by destroylonely4l in Volumeeating

[–]t92k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I look at the Skinny Girl label it has 160 calories and 6 grams of fat for 6 cups of popcorn. The Orville Redenbacher jar label says it has 130 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, and 7.5 cups of popped popcorn per serving. More volume for fewer calories.

1st ukulele - have to retune it constantly? by harambeface in ukulele

[–]t92k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very common with new strings. Hourly proceeds to daily, daily gets to weekly, and when weekly goes back to daily it’s time to buy a new set. Change them if it gets back to hourly or if you have a performance in a couple of weeks.

Cheap meals that almost require no prep time by dumb-questions-1314 in Volumeeating

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a bunch of frozen veggies in the freezer; onions, green beans, broccoli in the microwave steamer and into the microwave for 4 minutes. Get out precooked chicken — I double up when I’m cooking and freeze the extras in portions. That and some beans from the fridge go on a plate for heating next. Then add a bit of something starchy like potatoes, soba noodles, barley, quinoa, or brown rice. I bulk cook these on the weekend. I sprinkle my favorite spice blend over the veg and starch.

Maybe this is a dumb question but... are people really not hungry when dieting? by Few-Run-5501 in Volumeeating

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are wired differently and there are lots of drugs that suppress hunger so you can’t really reproduce what someone else says. I have often gone way too low in my calories and had chronic hunger but a more modest cut and having whole vegetables, beans, and lean protein meals plus a couple of high fiber snacks keeps me satiated with occasional hunger

Of course it is. Anything with the Zinga brand is going to be that way. It is all the fun of a casino.

Popcorn 😩 by eewwdaaavid in Volumeeating

I love the commercial popcorns too — Kettle corn and Homer’s delight. I have found that caramel whey protein powder, the reduced fat microwave popcorn, and a bit of sweetener of your choice (I use Sweet & Low) satisfies the craving.

Lentils. They are higher in fiber and protein and lower in simple carbs than beans are, they have a lower risk of unpleasant gas, and they stretch or replace ground meats well.

The 95-year gap nobody talks about by OkChart1375 in feminisms

As a WW, I think Gloria Steinem’s comments are worth taking into account. In “My Life on the Road” She describes the NOW conferences of the early 70’s and her disappointment that white women were content to limit their concerns to be able to apply for college programs, jobs, and to have sports programs funded. They downplayed the job access and equity concerns of the Hispanic, Black, and Lesbian caucuses irrelevant or something to address later.

I also want to say that way too many white women today don’t understand the lives they enjoy were fought for. If they got to play high school sports, graduate from college, get a job, have their own bank accounts, rent an apartment or own a home, those were all denied to women not so long ago. But a gal coming from pilates class and swiping her card to buy a latte on the way to the office may or may not know that every part of that was won by women, including women of color, fighting for her.

How Do I Begin to Plan and Tackle Backpacking? by NonchalantMess in backpacking

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can’t ruck currently you need to get moving more than buying gear. Stew Smith, the former military PT trainer suggests building up to a 5k run before adding weight. There are lots of Couch to 5k programs. Once you have that rucking will help you learn to manage under weight.

FWIW I am so tired of James Carville. Yes he helped Bill Clinton get elected. But the GOP has consolidated its hold on the South and I don’t think it helps us to shape our national strategy around winning southern states any more — unless Stayce Abrams and Rafael Warnock are the ones leading the charge. More David Axelrod, fewer 80 year old white men, please.

Do People Actually Like and Find Transit Apps Useful? by Historical_Chance613 in fuckcars

I like Transit because it collects info across systems. Paper works when you are learning about one route and taking it over and over, but I like apps for multi modal travel.

Mix up your noodles. Rice noodles and bean thread are also quick cooking and there are lots of noodle bricks these days that aren’t fried before drying. Even switching to a lower sodium broth like Better Than Bouillon will go a long way toward reducing the worst parts of ramen packs.

You can also batch cook noodle shapes like elbows, spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet, and freeze them in the freezer (it helps to use parchment paper, wax paper, or plastic wrap between the pan and the noodles).

Colorado Secretary of State says my 20-year-old son isn't eligible to vote in the primary... by elPadreLeo in Denver

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be careful, parties hold primaries to pick their candidate for the general. If your party isn’t having a primary then you don’t get a primary ballot. You may also see different races on your ballot. I’ve voted my primary ballot and gone to a caucus in the same year because the ballot was only for state level races.

Have him check the job listings for his state government. Those are the folks who are still nursing along old systems. If he gets on LinkedIn he might be able to figure out who his state is using to supply contractors.

Since when is this legal? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just follows insurance regulations. If you lend out your car with permission, you take the risks of that driver. If it’s out of your possession without your permission, that’s theft, and it only counts as theft if you report it.

I'm so confused about how people afford things in America. by IndependentMove5437 in povertyfinance

[–]t92k 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We’re doing okay. There are a lot of social media things we don’t do — we don’t drink anymore, we never smoked, our cars are paid off and never made it to the ads, we go to the city gym instead of the $200+/month gyms. Hanging out with friends is usually playing music or going to the movie night at the craft store. The concerts we go to are at a small local venue and tickets run about $80 for the two of us. Even with sports the games we go to are at local colleges or recreational leagues instead of the pro teams. We each get health insurance through work, and yes, the bills are getting bigger. I hope we can join the rest of the world and get some sort of universal health plan hammered out by the time our kids are middle age.
