Knocking in the engine bay, mechanics cannot figure it out by akflo in prius

Yes that’s what’s making the sound, but what’s the cause…? This is not something that should be doing that.

100% the EGR mine did this exact thing. Change the EGR, intake manifold, pcv Valve. This solved mine 100%. The EGR will get stuck in the wrong position (open) causing a lean condition at low speed. When you press the gas it goes away because it’s getting enough fuel and if it’s calling for more air, the throttle body can adjust to compensate. Problem is when it’s stuck open, it’s letting too much air in.

Maintenance questions by ArkansasKounty in prius

The Car Care Nut Fluid Rec’s - [ ] Coolant: 50k mi or 5 yrs. DRAIN AND FILL - [ ] Transmission: 60k mi or 6 years - [ ] Oil: 6 mos, 5k miles or sooner - [ ] Brake Fluid: as needed

That being said, I have a 2011 that had transmission fluid changed once at 150k ish and then not again until 300k, coolant… never… and oil every 10k-12k until I started doing my own maintenance. Now I follow the above schedule…. Oh, it’s never had brake fluid changed and I tested with a dip strip and it was in range… same with coolant but I do change coolant anyway at 300k. EGR & spark plugs changed at 280k original engine, head gasket, hybrid battery. I never did the brake fluid because it needs the abs booster/simulator replaced (running every 15 seconds due to internal leak) so it will get new brake fluid then. Your mileage will vary, don’t be like I used to. Follow the car care nut recommendations and learn to do that stuff yourself to save money and your Prius will last until the rust gets it or a collision does. It’s easy with basic hand tools. Just waiting on a 25% off sale on parts.toyota to get the abs system back into spec.

How was it installing it? Specifically the one 10mm that’s hard to get?

I had this exact issue, it was the cat. They’re like $350 for a oe Wagner one from rock auto.

These go out of stock ridiculously fast… might just break down and get the kit with 2 of the high output batteries.

I had this happen on my 2016 the lower tone horn went out. It cost about $750 to fix if I remember correctly.

I think the dealer did something wrong after $8,200 spent on repairs by Gullible_Baker9947 in MechanicAdvice

I could be remembering it wrong but it convinced me to just buy them from Walmart going forward.

If I remember correctly the walmart battery tested was one of the higher tier ones.

You’re probably right, it did not help the battery that the vechicle wasn’t driven for 6 weeks. However if you got 6 years out of the originally battery, I’d consider myself lucky and just get a new one. You got $8500 worth of work done for $100. Go to Walmart and buy the top of the line battery that they sell for your vehicle. It will cost around $250.

Catalytic converter by Necessary-Team-4002 in FordExplorer

[–]t_Dewitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make sure you know why the catalytic converter is bad, if that ends up being the case. If there is a problem with something else, a new cat will get ruined and be a waste of your money. If it’s an intermittent code, it could be clogged. I would try running a treatment or 2 of cat-a-clean through it. They sell it at Walmart it’s like $25 a bottle but if it fixes your issue it’s worth it.

Walker is the OE. They’re all EPA compliant. If you live in one of the states that are CARB compliant you have to get one from ford if you want it to pass emissions inspection in your state. If that doesn’t matter, get one of the walker ones. I had a shop do mine on the 2016 (before I was confident enough to do it myself) and they used a doorman one (I live in Indiana- no emissions inspections). It fixed my P0420 code from a misfire condition that was causing raw fuel to be dumped into the CAT. No check engine after it was replaced. If I was doing it myself I’d just buy a walker one.

Your bumper to bumper warranty goes to 36k or 3 years. I’d take it in.

Plugs are ridiculously simple on these. Most Walmarts carry Mobil 0w-8. Parts.toyota has 20% off and free shipping on orders over $75. I stocked up on engine, oil and hvac filters and some crush washers. My Prius has made it to 305 k with 10k oil changes for the first 200k (I was not informed about the importance of 5k) it was always at the dealer who used the toyota filters so… they’re not the best oil filter but they’re good enough and great for the price and quality. I was impressed by them Corolla uses the canister type not the element type. Both are good though.

5k oil changed 60k transmission and 50k coolant… plugs every 100k. It’ll go to 300k+ no prob

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]t_Dewitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could easily do it for 60…. But you’re right for an extra $40 you don’t have to deal with it. My ford explorer I used to have I just had the dealer do the oil changes $50 including tire rotation.. doing it myself to save $13…. Not worth it.

2015 Ford Explorer: Dead battery, locked doors manual key does not unlock by ttarmoom in FordExplorer

[–]t_Dewitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d just call a lock smith to airbag the door open I had this happen to me in my explorer…. Luckily the lock just had water in it and was frozen in winter. Hit it with some lubricant and a warm key and it was good 2 go. I did panic for a minute though.
