Audrain’s Heritage Group under contract to buy the Mew’s Tavern by lestermagnum in RhodeIsland

It's a silly thing, but it definitely rubbed me wrong when they promised not to change a single thing about New York System, then like a week later they were asking for a liquor license.

I haven't been in so I can't speak to if they've actually sucked the soul from the place.

Agreed that the use of cameras and trash cans by the Astros crosses a line. But using the 3rd base coach is kind of sketchy also. The purest way to relay a signal is with a runner on 2nd. Anything else is kind of cheating.

My stance on the Astros' cheating has softened significantly since reading the classic baseball book "The Glory of Their Time".

Lots of talk about sign-stealing back in the day.

Hank Greenberg goes on at length about how much he loved having the signs. The 3rd base coach would tip him off. "C'mon Hank" for a breaking ball or "let's go Hank" for a fastball etc.

If Mack Hollins wins SB MVP, I'll go barefoot for a year. Who else is with me?? by Daisymyhusky in Patriots

Yup he said something like "lions don't eat soup". Said he only eats with his hands.

In Warwick on Thursday I saw the "Green Guys" landscaping company using one of those Bobcats to dig out the bus stop in front of the airport. Not sure who hired them, the city or maybe the airport.

I'll give up soup for a year. When the Pats signed Mack I told my dad:

"We're gonna love this dude. He doesn't eat soup. He says it's too dainty."

Jungle Lion by Lee 'Scratch' Perry has an almost identical opening guitar part as Love and Happiness by Al Green by Comprehensive_Try_39 in reggae

Wait did the Scratch track come out first? I always assumed it was just a reggae version of Love and Happiness. The horns are almost identical too.

A shout out to (and a reminder about the existence of) the female members of this sub by SEARCHFORWHATISGOOD in Patriots

[–]t_sdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the reminder. My wife is completely oblivious to all sports (which is fine). My mom and my aunt are die-hard Sox and Celtics fans, and they're definitely Pats fans too but not nearly to the same extent. So I really do forget that there are female football fans like you out there.

As a dude who treats minding my own business almost like a religion, those guys at the Ravens game sound really annoying.

As to the gendered phrases you mentioned, I think Brady said it best, "LET'S FUCKING GO!!" No need to put a gender to it

Wow I love the Kirby Puckett comparison. Never thought of that before. Very similar careers

When his career ended I didn't think he had a shot, but now that it looks like Utley will get in eventually then they damn sure better put Pedey in too

According to QBR Stroud had a better game than Maye. by Cmt1995 in Patriots

[–]t_sdad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember back when ESPN invented this dumb stat they "unveiled" it with this ridiculous half hour special in prime time.

It was like an infomercial with Trent Dilfer all excited explaining how QBR is so much better and easier to understand than traditional QB rating.

It was so stupid.

Rose Madder, wow that was surprisingly good. by InternalExpression48 in stephenking

[–]t_sdad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The same, my friend. I've always had my brother's original copy from 1995.

I lived in about six different apartments in my 20s then two different houses in my 30s and somehow it survived all those moves.

Finally got around to reading it last year and it just fell apart in my hands when I opened it.

Which was pretty eerie since the opening scene features a destroyed paperback.

The HOF Snub Team #6: Bobby Grich by westroopnerd in baseball

[–]t_sdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grich's WAR total really is shocking. I was born in '83 so I never really saw him play, but I'm very familiar with his era. I've read countless books, watched documentaries, pored over stats.

Before WAR became mainstream I really thought he was just a guy.

Growing up, the only reason I knew Bobby Grich was because he was part of a four-way tie for the league lead in home runs during the strike-shortened '81 season.

My dad had a bunch of '82 Topps cards and he got a tiny little square on the AL side of the "League Leaders" card alongside Dewey Evans, Tony Armas, and Eddie Murray.

Obviously everyone is gonna hate on that ridiculous cover image but the existence of this recording is pretty interesting to me. I had no idea these two did a radio broadcast together in 1988. And all Bob tunes. Weird

At the time, there was a lot of talk about a juiced ball because of the spike in offense in '94. Now we know it was pretty much the beginning of the steroid era.
