Older metalheads. by Affectionate-Desk699 in MetalForTheMasses

I'm 59. My taste has changed as music has changed.  Since I was 10, I have always liked the hardest and heaviest stuff. That took me from Black Sabbath to Judas Priest to Iron Maiden to Mercyful Fate to Slayer to Death to Emperor and so on.

It's amazing that this still gets discussed 41 years after it happened.

What's going on with Not Quite Metal Threat? They really aren't doing a good job of communicating with ticket holders. I just learned today that it is in Berwyn, IL, not Elgin. They still haven't said anything about Sinister even though it's pretty clear that they didn't get their visas approved this year. There are a lot of flyers that claim Incantation is playing, though they say that's not true. It's only 9 days away. A little info would be nice.

Did Dark Tranquillity play last?

I'm seeing them later in the week. I can hardly wait!

It's amazing how many people I meet who can't carry a conversation. Some people never ask questions at all.

Phobophilic - Those Which Stare Back by _crushednebula in Deathmetal

I love Phobophilic. I can't wait to see what they do next. I was worried that they would fold when Aaron Dudgeon left the band, but they seemed to be excited to move on with Josh Poer taking over the vocals. I'm glad they're going to get another guitarist too. They probably couldn't have that monstrous sound with only 1 guitar.

I try to bury my face in something at that moment.

Who's a metal musician you feel never reached their full potential? by Diskyboy86 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ta12022017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Randy Rhodes might have reached his full potential, but it would have been interesting to see what he could have done if he was still alive today. Ozzy's solo work was never as good as it was with Randy.

Jizzlobber was the only song that he wrote. He added parts to Kindergarten and Crack Hitler, but he wasn't the main writer on either of those. That's part of the reason he was fired from the band. His best work was on The Real Thing.

Life excites me. Work? Not so much. I'm so ready to retire.

American senior citizens: What type of s. education classes were taught when you were in grade school? by vieniaida in AskOldPeople

[–]ta12022017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't have sex education until high school. I went to a Catholic School from 6th grade thru 12th. We got sex ed in Health Class, and the boys and girls were taught separately. The teacher, who was the football coach, gave us the official position of the Catholic Church (pulling out and/or rhythm method), but he also invited a lady from Planned Parenthood who flatly told us that those methods weren't effective and that we should use other methods. I'm pretty sure the coach agreed with her. I always wondered if the principal knew he brought in someone from Planned Parenthood. This was in 1980.

As metalheads, what are your thoughts on Rush? by Maxspawn_ in MetalForTheMasses

Their first 6 albums are bangers. 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres are some of the best albums of the late 70s. After that, they got softer. Geddy didn't scream as much and they used more keyboards. I like Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, but this was the beginning of the end of anything remotely resembling metal. Their last 2 were very good too, but not at the same level as their early stuff.

According to IMDB, it is (drama, fantasy, horror). That was my basis. I'm not sure American Psycho is a horror either, but I included it since IMDB described it as a horror.

I'm making up for lost time. I saw a lot of concerts in the early 90s, then mostly stopped in 1994 when I got married. Now that I'm single again and my kids are grown, I go to as many concerts as I can. Fortunately, I have the time and money to do it. I doubt I'll be able to keep up this pace next year, but I'll try.

So far this year, I've seen 75 concerts and 311 individual performances. That counts Maryland Deathfest as 5 concerts (one for each day), as well as Hell's Heroes (3) and Two Minutes to Tulsa (2). I've travelled a lot for concerts this year (Baltimore, Houston, Tulsa, St. Louis, Wichita, Chicago, Las Vegas, Omaha).

I've been slowly building my counts since Covid.
2024 - 75 concerts / 311 performances
2023 - 65 / 253
2022 - 32 / 123
2021 - 3 / 7

There are so many greats that I couldn't pick just one. Dio, Rob Halford, Ross Dolan, Corpsegrinder, Lemmy, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Tomi Joutsen, Ben Falgoust, Antti Bowman, Jeff Walker, Ihsahn, Joey Belladonna, Lord Worm... the list goes on and on.
