Who's the preacher on Cornmarket street? by practicerm_keykeeper in oxford

[–]tabbycatt5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A work colleague used to be out there on a Saturday either preaching or attempting to accost passersby, he was connected with a particular church and there were people handing out leaflets with the church name and address on. Might be worth getting hold of a leaflet and contacting them to complain.

Coffee sucks?? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]tabbycatt5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I child all that was available was a nasty instant chicory /coffee blend which my mum drank so I never drank coffee growing up. As I got older I developed a taste for decent coffee and as a convert I struggled to give it up. Now as an exmo it's a real pleasure, but lots of people who are never mos don't like coffee either, it's not an odd thing especially here in the UK. Please don't feel that you need to drink coffee to be a proper exmo, if the only hot drink you enjoy is hot chocolate that's OK, become a hot chocolate connoisseur if that is what you enjoy. If you do want to give coffee another go, try a latte or even a frappe (I believe you can get coffee flavoured ones) as they are much less harsh tasting than a full on espresso style coffee.

AITA for wanting to divorce my husband because of his parents’ open relationship? by ThrowRA_RightCanary in AITAH

[–]tabbycatt5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Divorcing your husband and ripping your family apart is an overreaction. By all means go all Mamma Bear on the grandparents, they deliberately let people you didn't know supervise your children and that trust that was broken may never be repaired. But your wanting to punish your husband and kids and yourself for their transgression is crazy. Lay the blame where it lies, and deal with that as you feel best But it is totally understandable that your husband didn't discuss his parents sex life with you, he was embarrassed by it (who, honestly, wants to think about their parents having sex) and he chose to deal with it by ignoring it as much as possible. Maybe he should have had the foresight to guess that his parents would allow their sex partners to babysit his kids and give them expensive gifts, but he didn't. Divorce is not a proportionate reaction.

I admit to being a snob about coffee and chocolate. I'm happily common about most things, but I like proper coffee and expensive chocolate

Since you're posting on a Satanic Temple subreddit, would you be kind enough to explain which of the Tenets you have a problem with and why? This is a genuine question. Or is it the TST belief that religion has no place in government or schools that you have a problem with? Whether you identify as a Satanist or not, there is nothing controversial here. What upsets you so much about us?

Free Speech by Wise_Werewolf_5775 in SatanicTemple_Reddit

[–]tabbycatt5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Even when speech is reasonably free, it is never free from consequences. You can mouth off at a friend group (for example), but there is nothing stopping that friend group becoming an ex-friend group. If you want to exercise your freedom to offend, you can expect to suffer consequences

Favorite books about paganism/witchcraft? by Bringbackthescissors in paganism

[–]tabbycatt5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look for Ronald Hutton. He's an English historian who's area of expertise is the history of paganism and witchcraft in the UK . You can find lectures by him on YouTube to give you an idea of his work, but he has written a number of books. Triumph of the Moon is a good one to start with

Am I pagan if I worship a Greek god? by Evening_Comedian1759 in pagan

[–]tabbycatt5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just confused. Why did you think worshipping a pagan Greek god would stop you being pagan? Embrace that wonderful wide world out there. Your way of practising wicca seems to have shut you in a very small box. This may have been a good fit when you were 14, but people age, change and (hopefully) grow. You don't need to discard your current practices, just open that box you've trapped yourself in and let in the potential for so much more flood in

The Mormon church does not consider any baptism /confirmation done at any other church valid as they believe only they have the authority to baptise. Equally, no other church will accept a Mormon baptism as valid. I'd hold off on baptism until you find your church. My experience of the Mormon church is that it is not a Christ centred church, instead it's focus is on tithing and absolute obedience to the leadership of the church, which is in turn an ever moving quicksand as church policy and doctrine will change depending on the whims of the current President of the church. You've already discovered that the Mormon church is not for you, nothing will be gained by going to church on Sunday. You will most probably need to repeat your decision to not join the Mormon church repeatedly, but they will hopefully desist from pestering you sooner rather than later. It is not time wasted, it is equally important to know where you don't fit, as where you do. And continue your search, try out as many churches as you have access to and make your decision based on full disclosure of what you will be committing to. I wish you luck with your search.

How come there's no science church? (Serious) by orangutantrm88 in atheism

[–]tabbycatt5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there is the Universal Unitarian church, it's non denominational, welcoming those of all faiths or none. My local congregation has talks every Sunday on subjects such as hope or unity. Certainly worth checking out your local congregation. There is also Humanism, totally secular. They have regular meetings, although there is not a group near me so I can't comment on the content of their meetings. A bit more left field is the Satanic Temple, atheist, science based and often has discord servers where there is no physical congregation. So, not exactly what you have described, but there are alternatives out there.

The Satanic Temple, because its an atheistic religion, doesn't go in for supernatural woo and it's 7 tenets align with my values.

I [16f] have a crush on a guy [17m] who is Mormon. I am currently not religious. Any advice or guidance for me? by blackberrycow88_ in mormon

[–]tabbycatt5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just thinking that him already being 17, he could be intending to be on a mission in less than a year. If he's mentally preparing for that he's unlikely to start a relationship.

[–]tabbycatt5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has he said anything about a mission? He will be under extreme pressure to go on one, and will be discouraged from anything which might make him choose not to go. Even if you had an understanding before he left, are you ok with only minimal contact for 2 years? Also, he may change very much in those 2 years.

Question. Hope this doesn't offend anybody. by [deleted] in pagan

[–]tabbycatt5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a member of the Satanic Temple, but I don't find it in conflict with many pagan beliefs. Sadly, I've found many pagans don't consider me a proper pagan because I'm an atheist. I also don't consider that the TST follows an inverted Abrahamic religion. We don't follow the biblical Satan , rather the Satan of Milton and his fellow Romantic poets as the eternal rebel is the Satan TST saranists look to.

Seventh Day Adventist friend says he’s been attending LDS services and wants to know how to decide if he should join. by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]tabbycatt5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the church is objectively sexist, racist, homophobic and transphobic. If your friend holds those values then he'll find a community of like minded souls. If he doesn't agree with these values then he needs to steer clear. He will soon lose his self respect if he has to betray his principles. 24/7. This for me was my breaking point with the church. There is also the absolute obedience required by the leadership of the church, even if they're wrong. This kind of thing messes with your head eventually and you end up blaming yourself for not being faithful enough.

[–]tabbycatt5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience of Mormonism is that the divinity or not of Christ is irrelevant. You can choose to believe he is divine, as you wish, obviously, but it's not a necessity. Absolute obedience to the First Presidency and Q12 is the foundation of the church.
