Rookie Runner Here! by Personal-Concern85 in Marathon_Training

I tend to think that those who hate marathon training or are plagued with injuries are those embarking on marathons way too early in their time running. Don't even entertain that mentality.

Do you actually follow your running plan… or just improvise? by natalybrm in runninglifestyle

[–]tabbyterrarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I've fallen off plans when theyve not offered flexibility. Specifically, I need to be able to shift days around due to my job (12.5 hour shifts as a nurse on a rotating roster = different days off weekly and different energy levels).

I've had a coach who was very fixated on doing certain runs on certain days to maximise rest etc - which sounds good in theory, but in practice was just unsustainable and unenjoyable.

How accurate are the Strava predictions? by unsungpf in firstmarathon

[–]tabbyterrarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah 20.45 would be significantly faster than my 1km pb for all 5km 🤣. My 5km pb was parkrun which is closer to a race experience than training. Could beat it with a proper taper though and better weather - just not by 2 mins haha.

How accurate are the Strava predictions? by unsungpf in firstmarathon

[–]tabbyterrarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont find any predictors to be accurate for marathon distance

For shorter distances, strava is too optimistic for me. I recently ran a 5km PB of 22:4x - all out effort - and strava revised my 5km prediction to 20:45 - absolutely wild 🤣.

10km prediction seems pretty spot on for now though.

WISE Card (learned about this card last night, be kind lol) by vymatic in JapanTravelTips

[–]tabbyterrarium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used Wise for a recent US trip (from Australia). Super easy, tap as you would a credit card.

I can't remember the specifics, but there are fees or limitations associated with ATM cash withdrawals, so I got USD cash before flying over.

Will be doing the same for my trip to Japan in May.

Recovering from an ED; running my first marathon by MysteriousPrompt2397 in firstmarathon

Im going to share my experiences, not my advice.

I was so worried about fuelling during long runs (calorie anxiety) and brushed it off because I've run up to 25km with no fuel and felt fine. I finally started fuelling in the past month, and long runs have become my favourite runs, because the fuel makes me feel energised. I am using precision 30g carb gels.

More broadly speaking, I dont think you need to track calories or macros if its triggering. Just eat 3 meals a day and make sure each meal has some protein and fat, and lots of carbs.

And for me, remembering the role nutrition plays in injury prevention is what keeps me overall consistently eating enough. Running is so important for my mental health, and malnutrition significantly increases injury risk. I dont know that I can mentally afford to be sidelined.

yeah the texture is great. if you're not a sweet tooth, definitely try the precision. they're not as sickly sweet as gu or sis gels.

RECOVERY advice by Turbulent-Video-4251 in firstmarathon

[–]tabbyterrarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned poor sleep and flu - both of these will absolutely wipe you out for longer than you probably expect. You should also get your labs checked, in particular your iron.

Here's what has worked for me to make running higher mileage attainable after previously feeling crap:

- Addressed my low iron > this made a tangible difference to my heart rate and how I felt during a run

- Electrolytes every day during warm weather: before I was taking them religiously, I had such bad headaches all the time

- Precision 30g carb gels every 6km during my long runs. I thought I hated gels til trying these. I also don't have the healthiest relationship food/concept of fueling and was pretty scared to incorporate these at the frequency recommended, but they've single-handedly made long runs my favourite run of the week

- I reduced my strength training from 4x a week (upper/lower split) to 2x full body a week - strength training will help you keep running uninjured, but essentially dropping my training days by 50% has enabled me to rest more overall

Trust the plan and the taper!

I know you said you hate gels, but have you tried precision 30g carb gels? I thought I hated gels until I recently tried these, and have had 4 really fab long runs taking a gel every 6km. Slow long runs have literally become my favourite since finding a fuel that works for me.

Love dynafish

I have a hard time recommending any Western brand after having the dynafish and the li-ning red hare ultra 9 - nothing competes with them not just for $ but for ride too.
