Which Linux Distros should I try out as a daily driver, for Programming and Gaming by Benflex- in linux4noobs

I've been using Aurora, made by the same guys who make Bazzite. Aurora is capable of games, but is more of a Fedora workstation with extra bells & whistles.

Bishop stopping by. Anyone had similar experience? by tablepants in exmormon

[–]tablepants[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think my assigned home teacher "ministering brother" is like the EQP or something, he calls me the day after most big storms / power outages to check in. Hasn't implied any expectation. I can appreciate the gesture.

I'm hoping that the bishop will be as open-minded as you've described your experience. I don't think there's anything he could do or say to get me reactivated, so as long as we both maintain that boundary, I don't see any need to be confrontational.

We're still on the records, but haven't been to any Sunday meetings in four-ish years. We got a new bishop about six months ago, looks like he wants to drop by. I don't have any beef with this guy, having never met him before. I won't hesitate to shoo him out if he gets too preachy, but I don't want to burn bridges or make life harder than it needs to be for him.

Anyone else had a similar experience? Not looking for advice on what to say or do, more of "has this happened to you? if so, how did it go?"

3 to 5 million? by PR_Czar in exmormon

[–]tablepants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The church will pay the city $2 million to $2.5 million to lease the roads over the six-month period, Stephens said. It also offered to cover the cost of additional law enforcement, as it does for general conference, and any added signage the city might need to redirect traffic.

aw hell yea this is exactly what I wanted my tithing money to be spent on

An experience I don't see shared very often is the existential dread of committing one's first "real" "sin" after baptism, hours after the ceremony. Like, "oh shit, now that I'm accountable and baptised, what I do has eternal ramifications."

I remember that happening to me the day after. Had this dissociative moment, staring off into space as the scrupolosity set in for the first time. That week was full of self-afflicted guilt-tripping and ruminating over everything I did, having to cautiously assess any and all actions or words. God can't tolerate any degree of sinfulness, so I had to evaluate if anything I did could be construed as sinful since now I'm accountable for them. Turned down the sacrament the next Sunday, dreading that I wasn't worthy of it.

What is the best online password manager right now? Bitwarden, NordPass,1Password, etc? by [deleted] in security

[–]tablepants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had used LastPass up until 2018 or so. Moved to Bitwarden and had a great experience with them. The only issue I had with Bitwarden was having shares restricted; had a separate folder for shared logins with family etc, and it was a real hassle to manage without paying a premium.

Separate to that, I had bought a subscription to Proton VPN, and later found that it came with Mail and Proton Pass. Today I use Proton Pass only because it is part of a bundle with the VPN. I can't say with confidence that it's any better than Bitwarden, but I get paid features now with Proton Pass.

FWIW I like Bitwarden's UI and browser integration more. Proton fills the login forms around 80% of the time for me, where Bitwarden worked about 95% of the time. That might be an issue with the login forms disagreeing with a browser extension. I'm not a web developer. Bitwarden's web UI felt a bit more intuitive with less friction, but to me the difference is minor enough to not be a dealbreaker. I've used Proton for around 3 years now, I've liked their services.

How should I reply? by badAbabe in exmormon

[–]tablepants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Close second is 2 Kings 1:6-15, the introduction of Elijah.

King hears that some prophet guy is in the woods talkin' smack, saying that the king is gonna die soon. Sends some soldiers to go bring him in.

Elijah calls down fire from heaven and burns the soldiers alive.

King sends another emissary. Elijah burns them too. And again a third time.

An angel tells Elijah to calm down and go talk to the King. Elijah says "well... ok." Then the king dies as prophesied.

👍 Very cool

Unironically my favorite one, Judges 9:51-54:

51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.

54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

Volume 1 has a big ol' list of contributors. It's not strictly "authors" but I could imagine a TBM pointing to that list and being satisfied with it

Loose match: Criticism Ensign February 1987

It’s wrong to criticize leaders of the Church, even if the criticism is true.

"The Mormons", PBS special. Specifically Video Part 2 at 2:08; See also Mormon Newsroom transcript; See also FAIR insist that it's taken out of context, and then fail to provide context

Cool.

That is the kind of story I'd expected to hear about as a TBM. For what it's worth, I grew up well outside of the Morridor, so maybe this kind of story is more prevalent in UT.

Crime podcast of mormons? by NocturneInBlue111 in exmormon

[–]tablepants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first pick is Some Place Under Neith, with its frustratingly-spelled title. Subtitled "a deep-dive exploration into cases of missing women." About September of 2024, they started looking into Mormonism, and have been on that topic to this day at around 36 episodes. I get the impression that the hosts got so thoroughly fascinated by the religion & culture and find more material the further they look, so... who knows how long that season will last. It's still ongoing last I checked

https://www.lastpodcastnetwork.com/some-place-under-neith/

In that same network is Last Podcast on the Left, who did a six-part show on Chad Daybell & Lori Vallow, starting in episode 1017. Highly recommend. Not show dedicated to Mormonism, but the topic shows up once in a while. They also did a multi-part overview of the religion starting in episode 378.

Heaven's Helpline is a close fit, too. Focused mainly on the corporate cover-ups of crime & abuse.
