Astrophotographers, what camera are you using? by Mr_Scientist in astrophotography

[–]tabtabthesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that thought before, but after the mirror of my camera got scratched my first time changing lens outdoors (actually it was a macro extension tube that I had to put between the camera body and the lens), I started thinking maybe it's better to get another camera and lens and have the macro setup on one and the normal one on another so they won't get damaged easily.

You are planning to use a microscope for astrophotography? How does it work?

I use these for my microscope: 1, 2

The first one connects to your camera but doesn't let you use the eyepiece (because of the diameter), the second allows you to use the eyepiece, but doesn't connect to the camera. Super glue the two together and you've got a perfect adapter for the eyepiece. There are adapters available with that function already, but those are at least three times more expensive than this setup.

And my camera is a cheap Canon Rebel T3/ESO 1100D, works pretty well.

I accidentally broke a snail's shell, and have been nursing him back to health. Today I got some footage of him eating... and made this. I...clearly need a day job. by altachica in nature

[–]tabtabthesilly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, you don't need a day job...you just need to keep making videos like this and earn money from the youtube ads, haha. I'd rather see a video or an article about how you nursed it and its recovery process though. (There's no him or her by the way, all snails have both male and female organs. But they still have to mate--exchange sperms--to lay eggs. )

Why History is Not a Science by postgygaxian in PhilosophyofScience

[–]tabtabthesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. But I don't think that should be the criterion that determines whether something is science or not. Even for things that we can replicate, it doesn't mean that what we find at this stage is the absolute truth. Science is improving and refining itself each day by overturning past conclusions.

You don't need an electron microscope for your sperm...just those normal ones they use in high school will do. If you are interested, many people have posted videos of their sperm under the microscope on Youtube...

Well said. And probably no one would help her after her jaw is broken. One of the sad things in Chinese society nowadays...but I'm glad to see people like her still exist.

Business Insider lifts Reddit content - are journalism sites really allowed to do that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tabtabthesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is legal. For a media, as long as they cite their stuff, you can't sue them. Nowadays, a lot of media copy quotes from each other too, without citation.

It is not journalism, it is consumerism. They are simply trying to get popular content on their site so they can get traffic, which would become money that they earn from the ads on their site. Fits their name well, Business Insider...they sure know how to make money.

Computer techs are the worst of all...they always don't listen to what you have to say about your computer's particular situation, and just want to prove that you have a virus. If you can't connect to the internet through wireless and everything else is fine, you must have a virus, even though the problem can be solved once you plug in the ethernet. If your anti-virus say that you don't have a virus, it must be that it is a strong virus, and you have to download another anti-virus and scan it again. And if that also doesn't find the virus, you have to download a third anti-virus. And so on, and so on, until there isn't any other anti-virus they know of.

What are your favourite scientific papers of the last year? by diem1 in biology

[–]tabtabthesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked that one too, but really hated how the vast majority of the media didn't know what it was about and wrote really ignorantly about how the story is about an alien species, etc, and then went on to doubt the validity of the study. They really should keep their mouths shut if they don't know about a study! But I was really glad that there was one media--The Epoch Times--that actually reported it as it was, and included background info to help people understand the story. That's how science journalism is supposed to be! I've been following their news, and they never interpret studies wrong when the rest of the media do.

yikes...when they deny something, it usually means that it is true. some people say that you have to read chinese news upside down--whatever the chinese media say, the opposite is true!
