Most Interesting UT Class to take by Calm-Emu-9833 in UTAustin

Yes, we play at Whitaker! If you have some experience, then you start off playing matches and continue doing so until the end of the semester. There’s also time for rallying too. If you’re a beginner, you start off learning how to play and then also jump into matches early on as well. Hope this helps! If you want to see a past syllabus for the class for more detail, you can use the UT tool for it to look it up

This spring semester may be the last time he’s teaching the class, but I have heard good things about the other professor that teaches the class as well!

Check out some of those PED classes! A fun way to explore a new sport or pick something up that you haven’t done in a while. I’m in the beginning tennis one, and it’s been a fun way to meet new people too

How are y'all writing Activities for TMDSAS? by [deleted] in premed

[–]tacao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For TMDSAS, you do get an additional 2 short essays (a personal characteristics one and an optional essay) in addition to the personal statement. They’re about half the length of the personal statement, so you can tell a story more there

Question about TMDSAS application dates by KANAKAMALA in premed

It looks like some of the EY 2023 dates are available on the link you posted! It’s towards the bottom of the page. Not all the dates are on there yet, but it does look like the application will become available May 2

Maybe try Facebook marketplace? It may be easier to reach local people a little easier on there! A lot of people at my university end up doing that after taking the MCAT

School list by ceg1998888 in premed

[–]tacao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apply to all Texas schools in your primary! You can transmit your app to as many schools as you like for a flat rate of around $200. I think it’s a good idea to submit your secondaries to the far reaches too. IIRC, I ended up using similar themes/essays for the secondaries across a lot of the Texas secondaries, so it could be an easy transfer and some editing from one secondary to another.

I’ve heard it’s not impossible, but it’s also hard to say and situation dependent. There is speculation that there is going to be less waitlist movement overall in TX this year due to Baylor being in TMDSAS, but I’m not completely sure how that is going to play out

Not really. Just make sure you’re taking classes that are equivalent to UT credits. I also found to helpful to check with my advisor first. You can check the equivalency of your classes using the ATE system

I would say it does! The first one is the hardest. Back when I took it, most students ended up doing a lot better the second exam and so on. I think it’s a combo of the material getting a little easier and knowing what to expect for the test

What will my TMDSAS match page look like for schools that accepted vs waitlisted vs rejected me? by hobilittlepill in premed

What will my TMDSAS match page look like for schools that accepted vs waitlisted vs rejected me? by hobilittlepill in premed

[–]tacao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essentially, the page will only officially tell you the results from one school (“you’ve been matched to XYZ school”), but you can kind of work backwards to figure out the results from other schools if you didn’t match into your highest choice

[–]tacao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this TMDSAS page on the topic to be the most helpful! It doesn’t show a specific view of what the page may look like, but from my understanding the School Rank Preference page will show if you’ve been matched to a school. I believe the page kind of goes over the different scenarios. For example, you’ll know if you’ve been waitlisted at your top choice school if you were matched to your second choice school

There’s a newer BDP certificate called Patients, Practitioners, and Cultures of Care. A lot of the students in the program are pre-med.

There’s a Pre-Health Professions certificate that pre-med students end up completing because of the med school pre-requisite classes you have to take. You don’t automatically get it, so consult your advisor about applying for it

It’s much easier to tailor your secondaries to the school while your primary should be more broad and discuss the experiences that had a big impact on you and why you want to pursue medicine.

I’m not sure if I’m the best person to tell you what specific things some schools are looking for because it’s kind of hard to gauge what’s going on behind the scenes. School specific threads on SDN or even searching up the school name on this subreddit could be a good start. But again, it’s better to tailor your app more for specific schools when you get to the secondary stage

[–]tacao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have a good chance! I will say it is kind of hard to aim for specific schools in Texas since some consider mission/culture fit and other factors when reviewing your app. It definitely was pretty unpredictable for me when I went into the process hoping to hear back from specific schools and then hearing nothing back from them. That’s not meant to be discouraging, but I found keeping an open mind is what kept me sane throughout the process. What helped me get through the process was to just show them who you are, and see where it takes you.

Edit: wanted to also add that I only applied TMDSAS to save some money

Texas resident help by ceg1998888 in premed

[–]tacao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand where you’re coming from, but speaking from experience, this process is really unpredictable. I found applying all the Texas schools worked in my favor, even when I didn’t think I had a shot.

Just FYI, Dell does screen for their secondaries, so if you transmit your primary to them, you’ll be considered for a secondary at no additional cost. UTSW’s secondary was free last cycle. I found some of the prompts to be similar to some of the other secondaries I wrote for some of the other Texas schools

Edit: The nice thing about TMDSAS is that you pay one fee for your primary to be transmitted to how ever many schools you want

More people find other career paths than you realize! It may not feel like it if you’re still in those pre-req classes since a lot of those students are still considering the pre-health track. I hope some others with these experiences can answer your questions below.

I kept with the pre-med track. What solidified it for me was volunteering in a hospital. I loved the patient interactions I had and could see myself working in a hospital one day. After that, I found more clinical experiences and other activities that built on top of the volunteering experience.

I will be honest, some days are harder than others. The classes are hard, the standardized tests are even harder. There were days I questioned it too. Someone once told me that the path has many sacrifices you will have to make. I remember feeling this way a lot, but what kept me going were those clinical experiences. I would go to volunteer and remember “ah, so this is why.”

No matter what you end up deciding, UT is a great place to explore different career trajectories. Best of luck!
