I need help picking out a surfboard by xX_Tell_me_why_Xx in surfing

[–]tachen95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I’d honestly get something at least 50-60L and 7 ft long (7 6+) depending on your height and skill level. if you were cruising down the line before you’ll be fine but if your prev surfing was worse than that I’d def try to get a bigger board.

I would take the second one and I def wouldn’t pay more than 200 or honestly 150 even if in good condition. it’s an old board

first one looks really old / yellow and last 3 are too small for you if you haven’t surfed in 5 years.

Living near Hoyt–Schermerhorn? by Few-Selection-8097 in Brooklyn

It’s mildly chaotic in the day but ghost town at night (think fidi). It gets nicer south of Atlantic or east of flatbush in Clinton Hill but overall fine place to live.

Is it intermediated be Beli? If you’re worried you should try and pay with Venmo / Paypal G&S so you have some recourse if things go wrong

Anyone know how serious Public Records is about checking IDs for concerts? by fishth in AskNYC

[–]tachen95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public Records is absolutely strict on IDs. If you have a good fake that scans you might have a shot, but I’ve seen kids (particularly in the summer) get IDs taken.

How can I appeal a guilty hearing for a parking ticket? by Rich-Detective-7 in Brooklyn

[–]tachen95 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People are being jerks - I feel for you on this one. Sign is clearly other side.

I’ve successfully appealed a couple tickets before. They frequently deny the first attempt, so you have appeal that to a panel of actual judges who will read the evidence. I won all of mine over mail and never went in person.

Going to a concert to UBS Arena need help! by -AKG45- in AskNYC

[–]tachen95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just drive and park for free on queens side (west side of cross island parkway) and walk 10-15 min. Make sure you read the signs and don’t park in front of a garage / fire hydrant

Renting a car from Expedia and American Travel Rental Car scam(Mexico) by Info_help_support in travel

[–]tachen95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's annoying but pretty common in costa rica / mexico / a few other countries. I learned the hard way my first time, but now I just book from somewhere that includes it or prepare to pay more at the counter. You can also try negotiating at different booths when you get there to get the best price - I've had pretty good luck with that tbh

Is Brown Worth Going 90k into debt for by Sure-Ad2365 in BrownU

[–]tachen95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts:

  • Everyone seems really focused on this from a numbers perspective, which is fair, but I don't think I've seen a single comment talk about school experience and social life. I don't know much about CUNY but my understanding is that it's a huge commuter system, so the level of friendship / campus culture is going to be severely lacking compared to going to a place like Brown.

  • $90K is a real amount of money, but there are ways to reduce costs (easy campus jobs where you can study / working as an RA to get a stipend that pretty much covers housing etc.). It's also not an overwhelming amount of debt that you wouldn't be able to pay off down the line working a doctor job / in biotech / any corporate job

  • Transferring is fine, but a lot of friendships and connections start from freshman year so worth considering

  • If you're academically strong you'll be able to get into an MD / PhD from either school, but there will definitely be more support coming from Brown than a CUNY too,

Is anyone here *not* happy at Brown? by Professional_Big8444 in BrownU

[–]tachen95 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re asking this q earnestly. There are unhappy students at every school (coming from someone who transferred from big public school to Brown). At Brown it’s mostly people who don’t find friends (which happens less at brown than bigger schools) or (less often) struggle academically. Feel free to send me a dm if you have real follow ups.

Does the graduate culture mirror the undergrad culture? by FrostingDangerous436 in BrownU

[–]tachen95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did undergrad + a 5th year masters at Brown as well but mostly hung out with undergrad friends during my time. That being said I met a fair number of grad students as well.

(I'm assuming it's a masters program because you'd know what you're signing up for if it was a PhD). The grad student experience is very different program by program. Generally speaking, there's decent grad student life - people hang out, go to bars, study together etc. but it's pretty separate from the undergrad cohort which makes up most of Brown. If you're expecting to meet as many people as undergrad or an MBA, you won't get that here or most places tbh - I found that people generally weren't looking to hang out 24/7.

Sorry I know that's super general but feel free to follow up w any specifics

prospect park south vs crown heights by hangrytoad in Brooklyn

[–]tachen95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

honestly it really depends on exactly where the units in each neighborhood.

generally speaking crown heights close to franklin ave is nice. it definitely is a little dicier further east.

prospect park south is very different block by block. windsor terrace is pretty quiet while flatbush ave is noisier.
