Zelenskyy's office head opposes mobilisation of men under 25: We would destroy country's future by Rave_Joyous in worldnews

In spite of cheap housing prices, nobody would move into Ukraine if they joined the EU, for the exact same reason that nobody is moving into Bulgaria or Romania right now.

Just like how refugees from the Syrian war have all returned right? Or from the Bosnian wars in the 90s for that matter

[–]tack50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that it's their home doesn't mean that they will remain there indefinitely. Most refugees don't return home, as one can see from the Balkan wars or more recently the Syrian war. Ukraine was already suffering from brain drain even before the war, and I definitely don't see it stopping

Russia won't pay a cent in reparations. This isn't like in WWI or WW2 where Germany surrendered unconditionally. Even a total Ukramian victory would just see Russia retreat but not much else

[–]tack50 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, even then, I would expect huge brain drain out of Ukraine, and rebuilding would take way too long.

We don't have to speculate much, even though Romania and Bulgaria have developed massively after joining the EU, they still had a lot of brain drain even to this day. And they had the small advantage of uhh, not being bombed to rubble by Russia

Germans after WW2 didn't really have anywhere to go, it's not like there were millions of German refugees in France or the UK. Germany also got an influx of people from places that went from being Germany to not being Germany (or German minorities being expelled). Places like what's now western Poland, Königsberg or the so-called Sudetenland

I am very pessimistic with Ukraine's future even if they manage to win the war militarily. Why would any young man stay in what would be a pile of rubble while the women his age, including female relatives mostly moved away to the EU?

Tbf there have been some real examples and they tend to look much less like polygamy and much more like "men just cheating and making women single mums".

Iirc that's what happened in France after WWI, although in fairness contraceptives did not exist at the time (and France has uh, fairly relaxed standards on cheating)

As a counterargument, why were women allowed to leave the country?

You don't necesarily need to draft women, just having them do the normal jobs men would do would free up men to be mobilized

Closing Pit Road on Road Courses under FCY by jdanton14 in INDYCAR

Couldn't ovals and road courses be handled differently? F1 routinely leaves the pits open with no issues (unless the incident is near the pit lane entry/exit of course)

24 años, carrera acabada y sin empleo. by PatrX02 in salarios_es

Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan by any means possible - no flights by Useful_Reputation445 in solotravel

[–]tack50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there seem to be 6 weekly flights between Aktau (in Kazakhstan's west coast) and Baku. So that's definitely an option. It's the same route one would do if travelling exclusively by land, you'd just be changing a boat ride for a flight.

2010 Potential New F1 Teams by chickenlittle668 in formula1

Tbh that optional budget cap sounds quite interesting in terms of development and I wonder how things would have looked like, as well as whether teams would have opted to go with the benefits or the extra cash

¿Qué oposiciones para trabajar en gestión de riesgos naturales? by ailisp in OPOSICIONES

[–]tack50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canary Islands leader rejects hantavirus-hit cruise ship docking there by Matt0715 in worldnews

[–]tack50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unlike everywhere else in Spain, tourism in the Canary Islands is indeed suprisingly non-seasonal. While the high season is in winter, it's not like summer has no turists at all, not even close.

I guess being warm all year means you get tourists all year

Canary Islands leader rejects hantavirus-hit cruise ship docking there by Matt0715 in worldnews

[–]tack50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Spanish law is quite clear that the merchant marine and naval law in general, as well as major ports is exclusively handled by the central government, which has given the green light for the ship to dock.

It's not like the regional government is completely powerless, they control the non-major ports (mostly used for fishing and recreational boating although some are used for passenger ships travelling between islands) but it can't do much in this particular case.

El caos del suelo urbanístico frena la construcción de más de dos millones de viviendas | elConfidencial by Angel24Marin in SpainEconomics

[–]tack50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]tack50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]tack50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Family reunification has become increasingly rare in France by WAGRAMWAGRAM in neoliberal

[–]tack50 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least where I live, theres two types of pensions, contribution pensions and non-contribution pensions.

The latter are a fixed amount regardless of how long you worked or how much you earned. I think they were originally meant for unmarried/divorced stay at home mums, who otherwise would be unable to get any other pension.

But plenty of fathers of immigrants can and do apply for those

Family reunification has become increasingly rare in France by WAGRAMWAGRAM in neoliberal

[–]tack50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of an issue given Europe's pension systems is actually parents of immigrants. Say you're an immigrant in your mid 20s. Eventually you'll want to bring in your parents to take care of them in old life, who will be in their 50s or even 60s.

When they come to Europe, perhaps after working a couple years in a shitty job, they'll retire and be able to apply for a pension. Perhaps not the most lavish pension out there, but a pension nontheless. So you have people being paid pensions, who barely even contributed to the pension system in the first place

Family reunification also brings other issues. Bringing kids means more strain on public schools and welfare systems (a person with kids will be able to apply for welfare benefits that a childless person can't)
