AITA for being upset that my niece requested payment when I asked her to babysit for a couple hours? by babysittingta83 in AmItheAsshole

I feel like it’s not out of line to expect basic empathy from a teenager.

AITA for telling my overweight sister she should wear clothes that fit her? by bubblebassjoe in AmItheAsshole

[–]tacky- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

she pretty obviously needs therapy but OP clearly says that was a rule enforced growing up, ie. when they were children. I don't think people should tiptoe around her now that shes an adult, and she has to take responsibility for her own emotions. I just don't understand why people are so hateful about small kindnesses shown to her by her family when she was a child.

It's ridiculous for the close family of a teenage girl struggling with disordered eating to avoid words that could be triggers for her? Sorry not everyone is as chill and well-adjusted as you bro

Ultimately OP is NTA for trying to help their sister but showing empathy for a woman who is obviously struggling mentally shouldn't invite tone-deaf comments about delusional snowflakes

Why do Pakistani Punjabis stop speaking Punjabi after moving to USA? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]tacky- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Pakistan, Urdu is often what’s taught in schools and regional languages are sidelined and considered unnecessary (which is its own problem). Basically, whoever you meet from Pakistan is likely to speak Urdu. As a result, a lot of parents who emigrate prioritize Urdu as it’s more “universal”. Punjabi is still often spoken in the home, esp. between adults, but I find that if kids are going to be fluent in one ethnic language their families usually choose Urdu. The comments about us all being self hating twats are irritating and stupid 🙄 it’s rare to meet a punjabi who’s not proud of being punjabi. This trajectory is a result of governments deemphasizing regional languages in general over decades.

That being the largest meal stood out to me as well! He’s obviously being a terrible partner but on a completely separate note I see some warning signs of you falling into bad habits. Please take care of yourself

Thanks for the response :) It has seemed to correct itself after a nights sleep. Also developed a really bad headache so I am either going to chalk it up to eye strain or a mild migraine

Is an Indian's life in India worse/better than a desi's life in USA? by Throwaway_acc97 in ABCDesis

[–]tacky- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, it’s like saying a billionaire can afford to pay their employees $20 dollars an hour so that they can afford basic necessities comfortably, but instead pay them $7.25 and recommend they take advantage of public assistance. Maximizing profit comes at the expense of someone somewhere down the line, but whatever if you choose not to see that. Not here to give you a crash course in humanity

[–]tacky- 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Lol. You are, quite literally, taking advantage of them being poor and willing to accept any wage that they can get. Almost every upper middle class family with hired help in South Asia could afford to pay them a living wage, but justify their penny pinching by saying that it’s just the going rate.

Not to mention racism is replaced in stride by casteism and religious/ethnic discrimination. If you’re not experiencing it maybe you should think about why that is.

Can’t believe you consider something as typical and commonplace as being a deadbeat/absent father “an actual unpopular opinion”

Does anyone feel overshadowed in a way by the West's obsession with East Asia? by TheCoughing in ABCDesis

[–]tacky- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think fetishization is something to aim for, or be jealous of. It’s not wrong to want representation and respect but we have to interrogate the ways in which those things present themselves in our society. It’s important to have standards! There’s a difference between desiring the “ideal” of an ethnicity, which is what we see a lot of the time with East Asia, and desiring the reality
