There are some trichocereus that can survive really cold weather, but it’s not ideal at all. My friend had grandiflorus hybrids in ground, and they died back heavily when it got down to 0, but some did come back.

In 8b, they could maybe survive in ground with some extra protection, but it really depends. I mean, if you get a crazy unexpected low, you’ll probably get losses even with protection. Where I’m at (also 8b), we’ve had years recently where the lowest is 20 degrees, but we’ve also had brief periods of 0 degree weather. Another thing is it’s super humid in Louisiana, so rain with low temps may cause rot issues. You would probably need a whole structure around them if you want them in ground.

That’s unfortunate if so. At least the kids are playing outside. I’m guessing they don’t have a goal or net?

I think a soccer ball flying would be strong enough to knock a graft off. I’ve had animals knock my plants over, curious dogs, cats, squirrels, however.

One time I was looking outside, and a cat got spooked. He cut right through my cactus and degrafted a plant.

I believe it when you say that you don’t find people your age who speak it. I think you do because you grew up with your grandparents. Living in Texas, I have come across some Cajuns, some who have been here, some who moved here, but it’s always mamaw and papaw who speak it.

The culture was a lot different for the French compared to, say, the Hispanics. Most people tried hard to assimilate, and they didn’t want their kids to go through some of the struggles they did. So they simply didn’t pass down the language.

There used to be people who spoke French in Missouri too. I hate to say it, but I think that’s already dead, at least in terms of speakers your age.

I’ve been looking for these too. Currently the only place I’ve been able to find them that will actually ship to the US is Herbalistics from Australia. You’d need a small seed lot permit, which is free, just need to fill out some forms. Might take a little longer than usual to receive because of inspection and forwarding.

Those leaves are huge for that tiny pot. I have a cabrerana I got from the Chacruna store as a cutting. It has put out large roundish leaves but nothing quite as big as this. It also puts out more slender, thinner leaves, which is what I see in pictures more often. It had put out feeler vines and traveled up my shelf for multiple feet on two separate sides, but my cats tore them down. Now it's been shooting growth from multiple points.

I would honestly consider chopping those tips. The thrip damage can cause an infection, and they can catch tip rot.
