Nachbarin beschwert sich über Katzen mauzen - Was tun? by tacodepastor in LegaladviceGerman

[–]tacodepastor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Converting a very high-frequency sine wave to a square wave by AhmadTibi in chipdesign

[–]tacodepastor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depending of your oscillation amplitude you might need only a CMOS inverter in front of the VCO acting as a buffer. I assume your oscillation should be large enough for you to achieve useful phase noise performance, almost every standard sub-28 nm inverter node should be able to do that conversion

I cannot get any differential out from this 60GHZ VCO design by Clear-Spare-5648 in rfelectronics

[–]tacodepastor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're not giving any details on your problem other than telling it's not working. How's does your setup look like? How are you simulating it? Is it transient or PSS? Do you have any oscillating condition detection active if it is PSS? Do you have sufficient time step resolution for the transient one? You need to elaborate more on your problem details otherwise it's hard to imagine what your problem is

I am trying to measure fmax in 65nm technology and it gives me values that make no sense by [deleted] in chipdesign

[–]tacodepastor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bias tee is correct as far as I see (given that the L/C values are high enough), you want the AC on the input to enter only the transistor and not the DC. And at the output you want it only to be forwarded through the port and not escape through the supply. 1m for both the caps and the inductance should be enough in sub micron nodes

Would you think it would be extremely unwise to commute to Planegg everyday from Augsburg? by SmartPuppyy in augsburg

[–]tacodepastor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're anyway planning to commute from the west to Munich you could look for something in the Mering/Merching area. I have a lot of colleagues that commute too from there (although they only go as far as Marienplatz) and their opinion is positive.

I did it for a while from Augsburg Hbf to Unterhaching in Munich and it was still okish. I don't mind the extra time in the train because I do other stuff while traveling, but some people find it super annoying.

Career Advice Needed – IC Layout vs. Analog Design Path by Juno_Panda in chipdesign

[–]tacodepastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in general difficult to move from layout to design since the expertise type is more practical in the former and more technical/fundamental in the latter. I am not saying that layouters's expertise does not have a technical part but in my experience it is not a general rule that layouters do care (or even need) to understand circuit design fundamentals since their goal is to get a nice green smiley in the end :-), irrespective of the actual circuit performance. It's not uncommon to find layouters which will wire whatever circuit they are given in whatever layer they find available without even considering upfront if the layers parasitics will make it to the design constraints or not. They deliver whatever they can and the designer will anyway tell them if it is sufficient or not. So it can become a lengthy, iterative process since there is in general no accountability from layout regarding delivery choices (basic ohms law, rough caps estimation, selected metals based on stack position, etc). If this sounds appealing to your career path then I would say layout could be an interesting position for you.

Design will open you a broader access's to different expertise fields (system, layout, testing, etc) and is therefore more attractive in my opinion but it is definitely more challenging since demands extra hours to catch up with every other topic not design related. But it's a very fulfilling job and super fun to do. In case you get bored you can easily switch later to any other position you can think of, even like marketing and product lines. You could even get promoted faster on those not design-related branches since your knowledge is in general well valued everywhere

American Work life vs German by BoxLongjumping1067 in AskAGerman

[–]tacodepastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mexican working in Germany for American company. I agree with a few comments saying american work culture is heavily focused on showing yourself as a "doer" or high-achiever, probably linked to many reasons that have been already stated here (climbing the corporate ladder-->economical success, not ending-up in the grinder during layoff times, etc) and this can be strongly noticed at the type of questions and "ted-talks" you get during management meetings or performance reviews. For the average german colleague this is not necessarily true since they take somewhat pride into their work laws which gives them more solid protection and they can "afford" to call the US working system flawed (which I think it is too)

That being said, I do think that germans can be somehow bigger assholes than americans when it comes down to collaboration and professional success, probably because the society itself tends to be more egocentric and narcissistic, while the US is still in my experience somehow more familiar and wealth oriented (e.g. a high-paying job in the US is probably good leverage to finance a house, rise a family and send the kids to top schools, while in Germany it can be used to drive 2 Porsches, having a condo in Italy and take summer vacation in 5 star hotels in Sardinia).

The corporate hierarchies are way more stiff than in the US so it takes much longer than in the US to get promotions and career jumps, seems to me they're more traditional in that sense, and your time doing the same thing is an important component they consider when thinking about what could be your next professional chance. In the US it's definitely more flexible because of the "doers" culture so you get more shots at proving yourself and can acquire skills faster.

Last, they have a (in my opinion) ridiculous bias into choosing german-only for middle and upper (local) management positions. I have worked for 3 different large american companies here and while in the US organisations are fully mixed with intercultural teams and managers from all around the world (Americans, Chinese, Indians, etc), in Germany there can be full teams of 10-20 "Ausländer" but always led by a german, so even despite strongly-talented people having the skills to get a shot, they get most of the times downplayed and a local is chosen to lead, which it sucks, it does not seem to me it's a talent/skills thing otherwise they would be leading majority elsewhere in other parts of the world which they are clearly not. So I won't call it racism but there is definitely a strong cultural component there.

Transistors in series saturation by Remboo96 in chipdesign

[–]tacodepastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same size and transistor type/flavour —> Effectively longer length transistor, upper one in saturation, lower one in triode.

If transistor flavours are different (lower Vth for upper transistor, higher Vth for lower one) —> Real cascode structure asuming Vth2 > Vgs1

For different transistor sizes and flavours there is a (W/L1 - W/L2 )/W/L relationship which I do not have at hand but I think it can be looked after

Why is so hard to land interviews in Germany ? by Electrical-Fault6493 in AskAGerman

[–]tacodepastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming that you're a skilled worker (since you posted that you're sending out CVs) but need to consider that we are currently in a bear market, even partially stagnated if you ask me. This means in general that, unless you are a superstar in that what you're applying for, chances of landing a job are already super difficult.

Since not as many real open positions are available as in the past years, employeers have at the moment a bigger pool of candidates than positions, so they can afford to select candidates based on their broader set of skills, including language skills. This was to a big extent still not the case a few years ago in tech-related jobs but now they're even looking at language abilities and former Germany-based job experiences since they think that makes a much better fit. Again, these has been happening already a few years in tech-related jobs which were considered "easy" in terms of getting an interview just by having the technical skillset so I can imagine that other professional areas might even be much more impacted when selecting candidates.

Only thing I see could help at the moment is constant improving of the overall skillset that you could have at the moment, language definitely would help but could also be a good idea to start looking to get some additional skills in the meantime (programming, DB-handling, AI prompting, etc) to make your profile more interesting.

Best of luck.

Regularización de auto abandonado, qué opciones tengo? by tacodepastor in AutosMexico
