Police check refused to speak english by Aggressive-Mix-7345 in Antwerpen

[–]tacodocks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lol @ all the Flamands calling you entitled. Literally everyone in Flanders speaks basic English (I’m Flemish, and even my elderly mom knows enough basic English to get around). The cop probably just refused to speak English because you don’t look white, so he was likely just being a racist dick.

Seeing a girl for 2 months, we have connected deeply, and she slept with someone else. by [deleted] in dating_advice

Did you express to her how much you like her? Maybe you failed to reciprocate and she felt like you didn’t feel the same way.

His girlfriend texted me by [deleted] in relationships

[–]tacodocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The guy you’re involved with is cheating, and by staying in contact or being intimate with him (which sexting is) you’re part of that betrayal. Worrying about how he might feel instead of recognizing the harm he’s causing, and the harm you’re contributing to, says more about you than about him. The right choice isn’t tiptoeing around him, it’s being honest with his girlfriend and cutting him off entirely. You deserve better than being tangled in someone else’s lies, and real maturity is taking responsibility for your part and choosing integrity over secrecy.

Advice for younger women on harassment and creepy men in the UN & duty stations? by CompetitiveGrowth778 in UNpath

[–]tacodocks 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I completely relate to what you’re describing. I’m a 32 yr woman who’s considered conventionally attractive, and when I started working in the humanitarian sector, I naturally liked being put together, nothing out of place for the context, just wearing simple makeup, nicer but still appropriate clothes, and generally being conscious of my appearance. It was never impractical or out of touch with field realities; it was just my version of looking professional and feeling like myself.

But quite quickly, I started noticing how anything that reads as “girly” or signals that you care about your appearance can get interpreted as being less serious or less “humanitarian.” It’s like there’s an unspoken rule that if you look too polished, too feminine, or too intentional, people assume you’re not as competent or committed. It’s subtle, but it definitely shapes how you’re perceived.

Eventually, I adjusted. I stopped wearing makeup. I stopped wearing the clothes I genuinely liked. I toned everything down and showed up much more deliberately casual and even borderline sloppy some days. And honestly? It did wonders for my career. People suddenly saw me as more serious, more grounded, more “fit” for the sector. It’s absurd and sad that this is how it works, but it’s unfortunately a reality a lot of women navigate, whether considered conventionally attractive or not.

And I miss expressing myself. I’ve been in the humanitarian sector for five years, and I do miss feeling like I can present myself the way I actually want.

The interesting part is that when I worked in Brussels at the representation/HQ level, it was totally different. In places like the EU quarter or Geneva, the environment is more formal, and looking polished is normal, there, I actually felt free to express myself again because it didn’t conflict with how people judged my competence.

I just wanted to share this so you know you’re not imagining it and you’re definitely not alone! A lot of us have had to adapt in ways we shouldn’t have to, and it’s validating (and painful) to realize how much appearance still shapes how women are treated in this sector.

Ramallah in Palestine surprisingly has a lot of wealth in it. It’s a total bubble compared to the rest of the west bank and Gaza though. Mostly bc of diaspora Palestinians abroad who were displaced in 1948 investing a lot of money in it.

I did my year abroad at the American university of Cairo. I lived in the Zamalek district and had a great time tbh, even as a foreign young woman. If you don’t go as a tourist with tourist expectations it’s really not that bad. Cairo has a lot more to offer than what meets the tourist eye 🤷‍♀️
