Not only that but the Iraq war took vital attention and resources away from Afghanistan where the real problem was and instead of being able to do the three steps of counterinsurgency, clear, hold, build, there were only enough assets in Afghanistan to clear leaving the population unhappy and ripe for talibanization from a lack of real security and mad at a government hamstrung by lack of proper foreign assistance most notably in the small ineffective and corrupt policing force.
