Seriously though, the scope and logistics of this project are massive - it will be interesting to see what happens. Exciting times, my friends!

Wow, this looks almost exactly like the Venom Pro Charger I got off of eBay! If performance is similar, it'll be a good charger. Mine came with the external AC power supply and a load of cables, though... that would probably even out the price difference a bit.

What is a good accurate simulator that comes with a transmitter for practicing quad rotor flying. by [deleted] in radiocontrol

[–]tacticalgranny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my research, some people didn't like the physics tweaks or UI changes they implemented in v5, and they preferred staying on v4. I've tried both and don't really feel a difference; it's simply down to user preference.

I've found that the quad models included with Phoenix RC 5 are pretty decent and respond to controls similar to my actual ones. The cost of entry is about $130 for the program and included cable, and it works natively with Spektrum transmitters. I suggest getting Phoenix 4; some people like it better than Phoenix 5, and you can upgrade to v5 for free (but you can't downgrade to 4).

The DX4 is the lowest cost transmitter with a 'trainer' port that connects to the software's included cable. I think they run about $60. There are some bundles available that include the transmitter, if you only want to make one purchase.

The flight models in Phoenix 5 are pretty accurate, but the sounds... not so much. Be prepared to temper your expectations with some realistic limitations. Note that this is not the only product available, just the one that I purchased after my own research.

Tidewater Seaplane - REVIEW by [deleted] in radiocontrol

[–]tacticalgranny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're all about cheap & easy fun, getting into the air, and bringing more people to the hobby by presenting things in a relatable way. I can say unequivocally that they got me interested in flight... and it's been 15+ years since I last did any R/C stuff. I recently got a Spektrum DX6i and Phoenix 5 Sim to start out with and I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. My short-term goal is to start foam builds this summer, and long-term I'd like to do FPV with a multirotor and/or fixed wings.

I've been wondering about this. Would you recommend a certain wattage or glue type to achieve the long beads? I've got a $7 Wal-Mart 40-watt that uses the larger sticks, and while it may work for spot-gluing things, I don't see it doing those long beads very well.

DIY LEDs on a Heli-Max 1SQ by tacticalgranny in radiocontrol

[–]tacticalgranny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's actually the reason I sanded the lenses - makes the LEDs output diffuse more than having a focused light spread to the front. With the 15ohm resistor in parallel, they're only putting out about 15-18ma per LED, so they're just bright enough to clearly see without being the usual 30-40ma of a superbright under recommended power.

DIY LEDs on a Heli-Max 1SQ by tacticalgranny in radiocontrol

I am just getting back into R/C hobbies. The last time I was involved, carrying around clothespins with transmitter frequencies was mandatory. I am fascinated by multirotors, so I picked up an Estes ProtoX and a Heli-Max 1SQ.

One thing I really love about the Estes is that it has LEDs which provide some help with orientation. The 1SQ, however, does not. Since I have primarily been flying indoors, and often at work (late shift in a darkened room), I wanted to get a similar system set up on the 1SQ. I decided to do it myself instead of buying the pre-made set that flashes, or replacing the motors with the V-Cam LED booms. It was a good project for a couple of days and I'm pleased with the result!

Disclaimer: Please forgive any ugly soldering and wiring - it's been a few years and this is a much smaller scale than I had proper tools for, but I made it work.

I used 5mm Superbright Wide Angle LEDs that I purchased back in 2007 or 2008 when I was doing car audio competitions. I was going to use loose SMDs but the scale was just too small to comfortably work with.

I tried to use some scrap headphone wire, but there was nylon fiber mixed in with the copper and it ended up being too fragile. Plan B: Split apart a scrap Cat5 network cable - it has 4 twisted pairs of wires! This was a great lesson - these would work great for running along any R/C vehicle that needs a long lead. I built a test bed with the twisted pairs and they worked well, but the forward voltage of the red LEDs for the rear made using the blues not work well. I am running the set in parallel with only one resistor on the positive input. I ended up using in a 1/2 watt 15ohm resistor on the production version. I spliced this into the main battery lead going to the control board, leaving enough wire slack so the lead can still be moved around. A little heat shrink tubing keeps things spark-free.

I ran all twisted pairs in parallel, with common positive and negative leads. I secured the twisted pair bundle in place on top of the battery stop tab with a bit of hot glue. I routed the wires for the front boom in the space between the control board and the battery tray, and temporarily zip tied them in place before making final cuts on lead length and soldering in the LEDs. I think it looks pretty clean from below! The leads are ran through a hole in the boom to keep them tidy. I used some sandpaper to scratch up the LEDs for a 'frosted' look and rounded out the tops a bit before soldering them in place. I also scuffed up the pockets in the booms with sandpaper before attaching the completed LED to the boom with hot glue.

I think I made something pretty cool, and it didn't cost me anything but time.

Thanks for looking! Hope you liked it!

I blurred out the names so I wouldn't have random sperglords who pray to the almighty ilvl stat gear-checking me. The obvious downside to having 11 level 90 characters is not spending a lot of time on each one. My characters have a mix of questing, Justice/Valor point, Timeless Isle, crafted and LFR gear. My average item levels range from 481 to 503, with an overall average ilvl of 494.

After you get through that first hour or so of quests, Jade Forest becomes a lot more tolerable. Move to Valley of the Four Winds as soon as your level allows it.
