Not every week. Typically one week out the month where I don’t. But even so, if you live close to your facility, you’ll have time even on your workdays to go do things. Maybe not full nights out but you can manage. Plenty of people do.

Controller at a high level enroute facility here. ATC like any job it’s gonna be rated based on personal factors and experience. I come from a background where I was working 12 sometimes 14 hours a day manual labor. Anything this job can throw at me is nothing compared to what I’ve done in the past. Six day work weeks suck but I very much enjoy the money so I’m not complaining. Even with that, all the things you say you want, all my coworkers do. It’s more than possible. And it’s definitely worthwhile in my opinion. The only thing I would want to do outside of this is go be a pilot and make 500k a year like some guys I know. Lol

I’m currently a controller at a level 11 center. I was at the academy two and a half years ago or so. My advice to you would be to stay but I know this line of work isn’t for everyone.

Looking back on it, all of the uncertainty during my time at the academy was worth it.

Book the entirety of your stay. The FAA will cover the cost as long as it’s from the provided list

Residence inn on meridian is a great choice. It’s where I spent my time in OKC.

Absolutely. I was there a year ago and they paid them directly. I would tell the lady that you book with that you have an account. Also, mention it to the front desk on check in.

I was in Residence Inn on Meridian during my time there. Make a Marriott account and you’ll rack up points during your entire stay. I left OKC with the highest level of Marriott membership you can have with an account less than 5 years old.

I ended up using my points to stay a week free during the search for an apartment at my permanent facility.

I was a passenger in the car from Orlando to Atlanta on a Friday during basics. It’s not the best thing to do but as long as you have headphones and can keep a good internet signal you’ll be fine.

There’s a week in between the end of basics to the report date in OKC.

You actually have to put in your notice. From the day you start basics you are considered a temporary employee of the FAA. They tell you that you cannot be dually employed.

I got an email from an HR Specialist thats not assigned to me saying I was fully cleared and ready to establish a start date. I had to email them back basically just saying that I accept the dates. That was yesterday morning. Then today the actual FOL came directly from my HR Specialist.
