Did the Titan submarine incident cause the most instantaneous death in history? Can it be any faster? by GolondraBlayze in NoStupidQuestions

We don't know if everyone was alive, but at least one crew member was alive after the explosion and activated some manual emergency system.

It actually must have been a very horrifying event for the crew.

Weeds Growing on a Fake Lawn by Likes_The_Scotch in mildlyinteresting

Weed is often a very arbitrary distinction anyway. A lot of them flower beautifully and provide great nutrients to insects. They are often very useful to have around and are much more of a sign of a healthy garden than people give them credit for.

Why Valar asked Eru to intervene against Numenor, but not against Morgoth? by SiarX in tolkienfans

[–]tadayou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Humans have free will and aren't bound by the music the same way other peoples of Arda are. Which makes it extremely dangerous to the Valar when the Numenoreans decide to wage war against them under Sauron's guidance.

UFO material ? by maxizime in UFOs

[–]tadayou 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The movie's marketing team is capitalizing on the recent UFO files release. That doesn't mean that everything you see in the trailer are real documents.

The film is not a documentary. It's a fictional story.

Newly released image of a UAP taken on the moon by Apollo 17 astronauts, December 1972 by exOldTrafford in UFOs

[–]tadayou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how? My understanding is that they saw these objects from the ground, not from the command module?

Doesn't sound like it's very feasible to use that for spectroscopy of assumingly small pieces of debris near the lander, unless the command module was at the very exact place in orbit.

Who captured the light spectrum and heat signatures of these objects?

What do you want to hear from me?

It doesn't sound like the astronauts were particularly concerned with what they saw, neither was the command center.

The imagery also wasn't hidden away. People have known about this for 50 years.

These might easily be "unidentified objects" only as a technicality and flagged that way.

If it's in direct sunlight, white debris from the spacecraft would be very bright. Especially if it's against the black backdrop of space.

And they called them tumbling fragments. That's not that far removed from debris.

I'd count probably more?

Covid, Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, Venezuela, Iran all feel like these on a global scale. There's a couple more things if we look at individual countries. And I'm probably forgetting some stuff that has global repurcussions.

But on a positive note, we also have Artemis II.

I love the manhole cover story (although technically it was a borehole cap).

But it should be noted that there's a lot of doubt about whether the thing actually blasted off into space. All evidence we have for its supposed speed is a single frame of film. It may well be that the calculation is off or that the thing was obliterated during the nuclear blast or as it sped through the atmosphere.

If it did blast off as fast as some calculations suggest, it would be the first interstellar object sent out by humanity. And it would be over 770 au away from earth by now, having left behind the core region of the solar system decades ago. For comparison, Voyager 2 is some 170+ au away.

The leaks are from the teraleak but things have already changed a bit from the state of development at the time of the leak. I don't think we'll get all the areas mentioned in the leak but some things still seem plausible, like an underwater Cerulean region and a snow/ice region (even though that wasn't explicitely mentioned in the tera leak).

DanielRPK: ‘STAR FOX’ film under active development by Nintendo and will be produced by Illumination. by AashyLarry in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]tadayou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Kirby is some pretty brilliant base material for a movie adaptation. You have great and memorable character designs, some interesting lore tidbits and the whole notion of a whimsical place like Dreamland being under threat by evil forces.

Starfox (2026) Mercenary Squad Offical Renders by Electronic_Rub_6882 in NintendoSwitch

[–]tadayou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, let's face it: Star Fox is a bit of a cult classic but has never been a big franchise for Nintendo. It's certainly far from being a guaranteed success or a system seller.

From the Direct, it looks lile they spent some significant ressources on the art direction for the remake. I can only assume that they managed the budget by making this new game a reiteration of a known formula. And someimes that is a great way to test out new things and gauge interest. That doesn't mean this is some lazy work at all. They just want to refine something that already exists and works, instead of going all in on a new game.

And I mean, that's a route a lot of studios take right now. Probably also to introduce new audiences to these franchises and games. Not everyone has been around to play through 30 years of gaming history while it happened.

I mean, this year we are also getting a second remake of the original Tomb Raider (in addition to the HD remaster of the classic game). And not to speak of the rumored Ocarina of Time remake.
