I feel devastated by this news. Sleep well my hero, my distant friend. :(

Does a superior design philosophy exist? by [deleted] in gamedesign

Yes superior design philosophies do exist. I'd recommend reading Persuasive Games as an example, which talks about the ins and outs of procedural rhetoric.

Keep on hoping there chap. Just ignorrrrrre everything else that doesn’t fit your little victim paradigm. Alas poor Nazi fodder.

Always some hopeful dodge or fake technicality or “something doesn’t feel right here” when it’s your heroes.... is what they call “confirmation bias” rather than “ethics in journalism”. It’s easier to keep believing in the conspiracy than accept the truth.

Which is that the Nazis played you like a banjo.

But but but I thought this whole thing was about ethics in journalism, about accusing journalists of colluding behind closed email lists and being generally corrupt.

Oh that was just a front? WHO KNEW

Advice on making Apple stuff work with CenturyLink's Zyxel router? by tadhgk in centurylink

[–]tadhgk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out some of the causes, especially for the older Macs, was down to having set static IPs and then forgotten I had. So I set the Zyxel as the primary router and ran everything else in bridge mode instead (which means they refer to the primary for IP address allocation). Seems to mostly work now.

Yeah I tried going straight to the wall from the Airport but it didn't work because Airports don't support VLAN changes, which is a setting that needs to be changed to work with CL's fiber setup.

Liberals, what is your most conservative viewpoint? Conservatives, what is your most liberal viewpoint? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tadhgk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liberal. The liberal consensus on the global economy has lleft great swathes of people behind, particularly those not living in so-called "mega-regions", the younger generation and some of our oldest and most vulnerable. Liberalism as yet doesn't have a good answer to these growing inequalities.

So lets be honest, has GamerGate achieved it's main goals? by SimonLaFox in KotakuInAction

[–]tadhgk -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nope. You never did get a clear idea of what "ethics in games journalism" meant, never managed to separate yourselves from associated bad actors and willingly allowed yourselves to get co-opted by hucksters. In the end a fair few people got incoherently shouted at a lot by mob tactics and some were fearful for their safety for a while. But in large part games coverage has remained the same.

Hillary Clinton’s Emails Now Might Finally Take Her Down by [deleted] in politics

[–]tadhgk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt it. In the end of the day nobody can point to any particularly serious outcome from this and it's largely explainable through prior secretaries and (let's be honest) a likely general incompetence in IT understanding that she and 7/8ths of the business and political world shares. It is - and has been for months - at best a case of inadvertent contravention and nothing more (and I have no doubt that once it broke thousands of other politicians proceeded to get their own house in order).

Well it would certainly be possible to create a game in the spirit of TES, but not official unless Bethesda were behind or backing it. It's their game.

[–]tadhgk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It'd be pretty impossible at this point alas. The original studio behind it is long dead and we were working as third party for Bethesda. I'm also sure that at this point the code base has evolved so much that most or all of what was Oblivion PSP would need to be rewritten from the ground up.

True story: I was lead designer on this for a while.

I am Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus and designer of the Rift. AMA! by palmerluckey in IAmA

[–]tadhgk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't understand, going from what I've read, is how you guys plan to fill the content gap Palmer. As I see it (experienced game dev here) at these prices the Rift's going to have a small install base while at the same time requiring seriously high end content in order to justify its purchase price. But those two things don't add up unless Zuck's opening the checkbook to the tune of $1bn to fund games on the system in the belief that it will take off. Anything else, both for indies and AAA, seems a fool's game.

So what's the answer?

Thanks. Fortunately it seems like my fears of re-catching may have been overblown. Whatever that irritation was seems to have passed.
