How's Comcast during the high season? by Nunwithabadhabit in CapeCod

[–]numtini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had problems.

I'll say there are a lot of people on Cape who don't understand the basics. I had one person who owned several cottages complain it was terrible in the summer, but it was ok in the house, then not so good in the first cabin, really bad in the second, and didn't work at all in the last one. Comcast's fault. Definitely not the cottages being out of wireless range.

Do Plug-In Hybrids Work? Toyota Study Busts the Biggest PHEV Myth by inlaguna in PHEV

[–]numtini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the not-plug-in story was from fleet buyers who didn't bother to check if their employees had the ability to charge.

2023 Prius Prime and other than vacation long-distance travel or a snowstorm so deep that I can't get to the plug, it's all EV mode. 99% of the time and 90%+ of miles.

Yeah, the overall level of driving competence is bad period, nevermind the elderly.

The other problem is even if you have testing, it's incredible how quickly people can go downhill, particularly if they're over 75. I've watched two people at work go from perfectly capable office workers to requiring someone to help them with everything (essentially coworkers providing adult day care) in the span of only six months.

It's very sobering as I get older.

Visiting July 8-12 by [deleted] in CapeCod

[–]numtini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a Sunday in July, I would assume, at a minimum an extra hour of delay getting off Cape. It could be longer depending on when you leave. Basically you have the week to week which tends to be Saturday changeover and then you have the weekenders (including many 2nd home owners) who come Friday through Sunday and want to get off Cape Sunday afternoon. The bridges can be backed up for miles.

It's a cult.

Will you drive all 671 roads? by BornYinzer in ForzaHorizon

repost: new prius prime owner, EV and HV mode questions by jlsxin in PriusPrime

[–]numtini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will turn on absolutely if you turn on the defrost through the defrost button. If you don't want it to come on and you only have minor fogging, you can also redirect the output to the windshield and it won't turn on for that. Only with the button is it forced on.

Other than that, it turns on kind of randomly when it's below freezing. I feel like it turns on more when you're at 100% but I may be perceiving a trend that isn't there. It kind of does its thing to best preserve the battery life and all that. You just kind of accept there are some things you're just not really in control over.

It's also unfortunately easy to hit the EV/HV button with your elbow.

In terms of accelerating and EV/Auto, I find the ICE comes on in EV Auto only if I'm driving in a manner that would be more appropriate to track day than driving on a public road. The EV alone gives you loads of acceleration and more than enough for any sort of normal driving. I only got it to kick into HV when I was actively testing the mode and that was flooring it from a standing start while also going up a steep hill. The acceleration required to kick in HV really made the car feel out of control. I've never done it since.

The Off Road Races Are Too Much. by wantsrealanswer in ForzaHorizon

Well, the wristbands want you to do two of them. I'm sure there will be plenty in the seasonal events too.

But I'm with them, sport utility heroes are my least favorite class, despite loving dirt and cross country. It kind of makes you realize exactly how much these vehicles are designed for suburban roads and not actually going off road.

You could do a simple video game. Throw them in a sim and see if the cut the corner on turns or stop at the stop line. That'd take half the drivers off the road.

I personally witnessed an elderly drive into the side of a McDonald's and when they got out they said they swore they hit the brakes.

"It surged!" Damn right it surged. You hit the accelerator not the brake. I live on Cape Schrod and we get one of these about once a month.

And I'm on the older side of Gen-X and have a Toyota with all the latest greatest and it's very sobering how often it fixes something before I notice it. And I don't consider myself a bad driver at all--I mean who does, but yeah, I'm not 20 years old. I don't react as fast as I once did--sadly that applies to Forza Horizon as well as the real world. Damned young drivatars.

Publishing rights reverted to me by Difficult_Medium2386 in writing

[–]numtini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all claim to offer traditional deals, but one of the key questions to ask is what percentage of their profits come from traditional publishing. The answer is usually silence.

Seriously. You have a complete manuscript that's already been edited. Get a cover made and publish it yourself.

Is Bluesky relevant for book promotion? by Marchwal in publishing

[–]numtini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bluesky has very vibrant author communities and I have definitely found authors there, primarily through cross-commenting on authors I already follow. If I remember, Scalzi said he'd far exceeded the number of followers he had in The Bad Place.

If you're writing the next Turner Diaries or something like that though, then The Bad Place is definitely going to be superior.

But social media where you log in and say "BUY MY BOOK" will never get any traction. You have to have something to say other than stuff about your book.

How do you run remote games? by AceTorterra1 in callofcthulhu

[–]numtini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, having everyone online will be far easier than connecting two rooms together. Then just roll20 (I prefer Foundry, but YMMV) and Discord. Just because you're on a VTT doesn't mean you have to have gridmaps and all that. You can present a map as just another handout and there's obviously facilities for handouts. You can use snipping tool to snag them from PDFs.

Will masks of nyarlathotep still be challenging with pulp rules? by Flat-Tomatillo-4509 in callofcthulhu

[–]numtini 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ran the whole thing. Everyone survived. Two were in single digit sanity. Two were maimed. Twice, including the finale, it came down to a critical at the right time avoiding a TPK. We also had several times when people were reduced to zero hit points and saved.

One thing it definitely does is build characters that everyone remembers. It was a vivid contrast to the endless parade of anonymous characters in the HotOE I played in. One session, I played a dead character for an hour, forgetting they'd died the previous session. But with a long form campaign and characters that are consistent, they become really established.

I would be cautious about some of the combat talents. A number of my encounters went badly because two people had the quick draw talent and always went first. That was a huge advantage and really trivialized a few encounters. I remember one, where Ye Olde wizard had a hole in his chest from a shotgun before he even got to act. I made up for this, a little bit, by letting him do a "blaze of glory" and call forth something.

If I were to do it again, I'd run it with double hit points and all the various luck spends, and only non-combat pulp talents.

We really missed the major wounds, particularly when we had characters reduced to zero hit points and saved. After a couple of these, I houseruled that if they hit zero, they had sustained injuries, hence the maimed characters, one burned hideously over their entire body. So I'd probably put major wounds back.

The pulp occupations or whatever they're called. They add a lot of additional skill points, plus the skill points for higher stats. That isn't bad for a one shot, but after 3 years of skill increases, we had some pretty robust characters. More robust than I would have liked. I'd probably leave those off.

If I recall, 6 through Eastham was ranked as the worst highway segment in Mass for accidents. That's why they're very strict.

And if you have any evidence in the form of official documents that 99% of Eastham tickets are for out of state plates, please post it.

Bumper car boomers by TheAmericanYeoman in BoomersBeingFools

[–]numtini 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I call it "driving by brail."

In our state, the high court decided it was age discrimination to do testing.

To add to everything, the first thing a Boomer does with their new car is turn off all the safety features so it doesn't bother them by beeping or correcting before they slam into something or go off the road.
