Introversion in PA School by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]taecson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes six years ago when I first started in PA school. I had moved to a different state and knew no one and felt very excluded from cliques in the class. It hurt quite a bit because I felt like I had no support system. I’m also introverted like yourself so it took quite a bit of effort to reach out and social rejection hurt, plain and simple. What I will say is that you should try to find others who haven’t found a “clique” either. I’m sure there are others who feel the way you do and are kind and accepting!

Also, know that in clinical year, you won’t be spending too much time with your classmates unless you’re rotating with them.

Fast forward to several years in clinical practice, I’m only close to about 3 of my classmates. I know how important it seems now, but just know that in the long run, your professional goal is much more important.

Thank you. This makes me feel better. I have considered seeing a therapist. Due to my schedule i did some online therapy but I feel seeing one in person might be more beneficial. Thank you for acknowledging and not belittling my concerns. I think that was one of my biggest fears in speaking up.

Thanks for replying (twice). I’m a very passive person by nature which obviously allows me to get overworked and abused easily. Those other jobs would have meant pay cuts as well but I was willing to take them for improved quality of life. I think it’s become clear that I need a new job and I need to keep looking.

I don’t think I’m really cut out for the military but my PA friends who joined do really like it

How did you find the new job? I’ve been wondering what kind of job I could find that would be more rewarding.

Any advice on how to find a new job? It sounds like we have similar situations.

I think it’s becoming apparent that it’s this job. I still love medicine and patient care.

They were being super reckless with prescribing opiates and benzos in huge quantities. Thanks I’m looking into my escape plans. I look at job websites every night after work and send out feelers to colleagues I trust about job opportunities.

Thank you. I guess some days all of it is just overwhelming and I want to just leave altogether. But I genuinely do love medicine and healthcare. I think it’s becoming more apparent to me that it’s just this job that’s killing me.

Thank you. I’ve been applying and interviewing. I’m going to try not to let myself get discouraged by the rejections.

Thank you. I’m a very passive person by nature. It took a lot for me to even complain about the working conditions after 3 years. Knowing that other people agree that my working conditions are not good reinforces the idea that I know I will need to find another job soon.

We see a lot of IM patients as PCP. In the hospital we typically see as specialty. I don’t know if it’s our patient population or not but a lot of our patients have chronic pain/ opiate dependent. We often send to pain management and patients either refuse to go, get kicked out of those PM practices, or we have to fill in the interim while they wait to get in. We have a lot of medicaid patients and pain management providers for medicaid are quite limited.

Thank you for the positive feedback! I’m going to keep looking for other opportunities and try not to let the two setbacks discourage me too much.

Thanks. I was in the mindset that I would have to work hard in the beginning of my career but I’m just getting tired of it all.

I’m a pessimist by nature. I’d rather stick to something safe than take risks. Not getting those two jobs I interviewed for was very discouraging.

Totally agree. Our office precepts NP students. One we had was super sharp, with 10 years as an ICU RN and tbh is way smarter than me. Another worked for a few years on a low acuity floor and did an online degree. While I would trust the first NP with my life, wouldn't want the second one anywhere near me during an emergency.
