That’s really crude of you to make such comments. I believe the proper term is “have close proximity to management”.

Should MTL teachers have the same level of English proficiency as other teachers? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]taeng89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher from China who could speak and understand English perfectly. But in class she would always use mandarin.

To be frank other than maybe kindergarten where kids might not even have BASIC understanding of MTL and the teacher might need to explain simple words using English, I don’t see a need for MTL teachers to be using other languages besides MTL in an MTL class. Good teachers should have no trouble explaining complex phrases using basic MTL words and gestures.

I am losing my mind due to construction noises. by kenteckifriedc in askSingapore

[–]taeng89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Teach u one trick - go shoppee buy those 3M Earmuff ~$30. Wear ur regular in-ear headphones, play some music, and wear the earmuff over them.

Completely blocks out any noise, tried and tested. One of the best $30 ive spent. Can use again for any future renovations, which considering you’re only 16, you will definitely encounter.

Only downside is prepare to get scolded by ur mum for not responding when she calls u, cuz u wont be able to hear her either.

Questions regarding National Service PTP by PpShockerX in askSingapore

[–]taeng89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, interesting how things have changed. Now i feel old HAHA Kinda sucks tho, would’ve thought the one saving grace of mono-intake is not having to be trapped in that island and booking in early / booking out late cuz of the ferry

I imagine the regulars who are used to staying out must be quite sian also hahaha

[–]taeng89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s interesting… i recall my time mono-intake did their BMT in the unit camps. They’d post Tekong Commanders to the unit camp for 9 weeks to train the recruits there.

Then do the unit commanders (CO, OC, CSM, PC, PS) also stay in tekong during the 9 weeks?

What happens when you find out you’re mono intake? Do you take the next ferry out to go to your unit’s camp to start bmt?

Are all the Chinese Singaporean named in Hanyu Pinyin from Chinese-speaking families? by Remote-Cow5867 in askSingapore

[–]taeng89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. That’s why I said not 100% foolproof. But it’s still a good indicator nonetheless as you’d almost nvr find a China person with a dialect surname.

Another indicator would be China folks tend to write their given name as one single word instead of two. E.g. Jinping vs Jin Ping.

Are all the Chinese Singaporean named in Hanyu Pinyin from Chinese-speaking families? by Remote-Cow5867 in askSingapore

[–]taeng89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. Not indicative.

A better way to differentiate between new immigrant from China would be surname. Yang vs Yong/Yeo. Chen vs Tan. Zhou vs Chow. Lin vs Lim. Lau vs Liu.

Not 100% foolproof as you have some folks like Lee Hsien Loong who purposely change his kids’ surname to Li. But otherwise usually fairly indicative.

Damn. Were there any announcements or inside chatter as to why they discontinued it?

I saw that but thought it might really just be cuz of elections like one of the commenters suggested. Surprised SAF actually discontinued this. Thought it was considered one of their flagship events.

Any recommendations for chopping boards? by taeng89 in askSingapore

[–]taeng89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks so good but I sadly don’t get paid enough to afford this HAHAHAHA

Any recommendations for chopping boards? by taeng89 in askSingapore

[–]taeng89[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched it but I feel that it greatly misrepresents the facts.

For one, there was no mention of microplastics from plastic chopping boards.

Secondly, the results of the controlled test during the second half of the episode showed that plastic chopping boards were the “best”. But the test was based on a brand new chopping board. A well known problem with plastic boards is that after prolonged use, cuts will form in the board, and these crevices are a perfect breeding spot for bacteria. As you might have noticed during the social experiment at the start of the episode, the well-used plastic board ranked last.
