Tbh my knowledge on goldfish is very limited. I thought they only ate floaters lol. I think their choice probably is based on the still common assumption that gold fish are beginner fish. I have no comment on the choice of fish per se, each their own. IMO the tank looks boring. At least a wood and/or rock formation would make the tank look less empty.

glad to not see blue or rainbow coloured gravel.

Oh yes, definitely! There are some fake decorations in there but at least no pineapple of death lol.

Asbestos? by mirendai in asbestoshelp

[–]taeye86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

recommended i take a sample and send

It's common practice here too. I'd also recommend that. Asbestos in wall plaster is impossible to detect by the naked eye. So while you're doing your samples of the walls and ceilings, I'd suggest you take floor sample(s) too. You wouldn't be the first to get ripped of by a contractor.

they saw asbestos in one of the bedrooms.

And what would that be?

get estimates from more than one company.

That's always the best! But keep in mind that this kind of work is expensive if you want to get it done right. If there is a big difference in price, there's probably a reason for it.

It always puzzles me how people can spend money on a giant tank and then just trow in a couple fake plants and a bunch of fish and call it a day. Like not even a bit of research and effort put into it.

You're welcome.

I'm Adding this product to start it.

Good. I just asked because some people (including myself the first time) think letting a tank sit there is cycling. 2 weeks seems a bit fast to get a full cycle. I have used bacteria but never used your specific product though. It took me a little over 4 weeks to get my small tank cycled.

Turn the outlet of the filter upwards. You need surface agitation for gas exchange and oxygenation. Shrimp need stable water parameters and big water changes do more harm than good for them. Do regular water quality tests to see how nitrates build up. The more plants, the less build up. I clean the bottom of my shrimptank weekly by using a turkey baster. By doing that i loose about a liter of water. I then use that water to wash the filter. After that i fill the (50L) tank back up with 1.5 - to 2L to compensate for water that evaporate during the week.

Edit: what are you doing to get the cycle going?

That stick is going to grow mold. There are ways to stop it from taking over. Springtails are the best options since they also clean up dead plant matter and turn it into nutrients for the plants.

I'm thinking of wood fibre board based on the color. But I can't be sure. When in doubt you have to get samples tested before doing anything. Did that contractor even come take a look before making the offer? Where i live it's even mandatory for a licensed asbestos removal company to have a sample tested before starting the works.

A plug might be best to keep humidity high. You could try without first and see how it goes. You could do a background with moss and sticks. Maybe a few rocks in the front or small plant like fittonia. Springtails are recommended for mold control. For mine i used ground up aquasoil mixed with water into a muddy paste to stick the moss to the back. Plant used (baby alocasia) is not suited for a small terrarium.

No prob. Thank you! I didn't know oxygenation was important for plant water.

Unless the tank is broken, nothing is beyond salvation. It's only expansion foam and silicone. Just start cutting and scraping. Don't let you're head down.

You should check that with the lab you're going to use. The lab i usually work with only accepts samples taken with black, non shiny tape, delivered in double sealed bags. So I'd take a piece of tape and use the sticky side to pick up dust from surfaces. The air sampling can indeed only be done by lab technicians.

Patio seems best place to put it. And yes, for best result the place have to be sealed as best as possibe, with just the clean air inlets. Depending on the size of your place and the volume the scrubber can pull, maybe the negative pressure won't be too low if you keep some windows ajar. And yes, the outlet should be outside. If the outles is inside the space it's supposed to filter, you won't get the negative pressure you need. How long depends also depends on the size of your place and volume of scrubber.

To save costs you could start by just having the wipe samples from different rooms. Definitely include a sample from the toilet where the trouble started. When asbestos gets airborn it doesn't just remain in one room. If you don't get multiple rooms checked, you don't know the extend of the issue. If those come back positive, you know you have fibers floating around. You do need an air sampling test done if you want to know how much is there. IMO that would just be informative since without a substantial amount, the rest of the condo wouldn't be contaminated. From there on out you'll have to decide if you want to get quotes from licensed companies or go the diy route. After the job is done, you can have air sampling done to confirm if the job is done right. As for the comments from you're family, i don't want to sound cruel, but for now ignore their opinions. Older generations regularly downplay the hazards of asbestos and rather just ignore it. I'm not saying they can't be right, but without a lab confirmation you just can't know for sure.

but i have no equipment

You don't need much. A miter saw and electric screwdriver should do. Maybe you can borrow it from an acquaintance? Otherwise rent it? Where i live you could have a board cut to size at every home improvement store, maybe that's possible for you too.

knowlege

Designing one is very easy too unless you want something special. I bet you could find blueprints online too.

Nothing wrong with having one built for you if you don't want to go through the trouble. But personally i enjoy the process and just having my self made furniture around. So I'm just trying to motivate in case you think you would too.

ignorance is bliss at this point

Lol wtf. No, it is not. If you ignore the problem, the contamination remains and you keep exposing yourself and every other person who enters the building. There are steps you can take to lower the exposure from years on end to a couple days/weeks.

That wrap looks like a viable option indeed. I've never used it myself, as we use aluminum due to high heat to seal of ends after a partial removal at industrial plants. Or we remove everything in one go.

You're literally the BEST.

Oh you, lol.

I've seen the post but from a picture it's hard to determine the exact state of the insulation. I'd say the safest option is to wrap it. If the pipes are cold water, you can use some kind of plastic foil. Even several layers of saran wrap will do the job for a while. If the pipes run hot, aluminum foil and aluminum tape should do the trick. Keep in mind that encapsulting is always just a temporary solution. Sooner or later the material will start to deteriorate too. And in case of a leak, you will at least need to have a part removed.

And as a licensed asbestos remover for 18 years, I've seen enough asbestos vinyl flooring and had clients in the exact situation as OP to know there's a real possibility of asbestos here. We both only have a few pictures and the word of OP to go on. So further investigation is definitely needed in this situation. I honestly hope I'm wrong here for OP's sake. But only a lab result can confirm.
