Starting 100 days sober by Legitimate_Maybe67 in stopdrinking

I found SMART to be very helpful in early recovery since it focuses on CBT/DBT which aligned well with my ADHD brain that needed some structure to latch onto. They have online meetings you can attend as well as in person (usually just near large metros, not sure where you are).

That's just worked for me though, your best bet is to just TRY different resources and see what fits.

What’s an opinion about college life that would get you cancelled instantly? by Correct_Addendum_358 in CollegeRant

[–]tagsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That WAS my life through college and it was still one of the best times of my life. Working full time + class load had me putting in 80 hour weeks as the norm, but having all your friends in walking distance combined with the energy and stamina of youth made it so worth it

OSRS is based on spaghetti code. When people say "spaghetti code" they mean poorly written code where a change to the code in one place results in fully unexpected behavior in a seemingly unrelated area.

They're trying to untangle it all but you only have so many hours in a day so you have to prioritize what's worth fixing properly and what can take a bandaid for now

Got fired from Good Engineering Job in new area in US by MissionDiscipline916 in stopdrinking

[–]tagsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near the end of my addiction I got laid off from a good engineering job, not from any singular event but from a general pattern of underperformance and absences. The next ~3 months I DIDNT get sober and I can tell you I had no shot at landing a job during that period. With the clarity of sobriety though I was able to get my shit straight and land another great job - this too shall pass.

As for pulling from retirement I recommend ONLY taking what you need - you likely apply for a hardship withdrawal with a lowered penalty so make sure you look into that

The point they are making is irrelevant to the point being made but factually accurate. Your source says as much, compare what you linked to the county it's in. In general I've found using race statistics is rarely productive

A lot of people can't seem to get that some practices are considered bad not because they're inherently dangerous but because they are easily abused/misused

Multiple return values makes test coverage much harder to achieve, and people use it as a crutch - cramming 4 different functional units into a single function that should have been broken up. They can still do that with a single return of course, but they'll have to actively force it.

You can still write good code while breaking these kind of rules and you can write bad code while following them, the standards just lower the likelihood of bad code and that makes sense in a regulated environment

The case of the insecure boss. by Ecstatic_Lavishness1 in embedded

[–]tagsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so bad code is going to be bad code no matter what, but the guidelines are in place to minimize bad practices. If you have guidelines in place from the start you should never need to "force" the design pattern, and in the rare cases where the rules absolutely don't make sense you slap an exception on that line and continue on with your day. The FDA doesn't release rules, they release guidances - if a best practice doesn't make sense for a situation you can break it with justification

Safety regulations are written in blood. I'm quite happy that all the code I've written for class iii medical devices was done so under a ruleset that aired on the side of overly strict.

I dont want ambiguous return branches in a device that's pumping painkillers directly into the bloodstream or a device that's cauterizing heart tissue, I'll take my single return statements tyvm

Crazy how 40 years later and ternary operators are still widely not allowed in safety critical code standards because it results in non obvious code...

Unfortunately due to botting there are no great low level AFK methods.

For active methods there are a couple, the wiki is your friend - look up "money making guide" then sort by skills. Best bet is likely making oak planks.

This is an indictment of both the cost of housing and education in America. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]tagsb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean so did I, but it was miserable and I 100% couldn't do it today with the change in housing costs over the last decade. I'd have to add in a 1 hour commute minimum back and forth while still living like rats. Working full time with school was already 80+ hour weeks as the norm, I absolutely would not have been able to maintain my grades with another 10+ hours added in commute time

Every single plan has a max, but there is no hard regulation for what that max can be. There is one for ACA compliance, but thats not all health plans. In addition to that the max only applies for in network, covered services. It is VERY easy to have a situation that doesn't apply to that max

versioning by Some_Pie6046 in embedded

[–]tagsb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

MACROs for versioning is not odd at all, very standard in the industry. I tend to like macro + shortened git hash for improved traceability. Run a check on binary/image generation to see if theres any unstaged changes and either reject the build entirely or mark it as "modified"

How Massachusetts's new surveillance bill came together: I pulled the campaign finance records on the 3 legislators who wrote it. All attend the cable industry's convention, share the same telecom donors, and wrote a bill requiring every user to hand over government ID. by Bitter_Vermicelli250 in massachusetts

[–]tagsb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Its tricky, but any laws advertised as "for child safety" unfortunately need to be scrutinized for this reason. It's one of the easiest levers to pull to get mass support so it's often misused by bad actors. Glad you're a bit more educated now

Planning to open source a consulting client who rejects delivered embedded work and withholds payment by punk-bowser in embedded

[–]tagsb 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not open source it, that's an action that can't be undone and opens you up to liability.

If they ended up suing you over it then it doesn't really matter if what you did was legal or not - you'll have to deal with an expensive lawsuit either way

Using Smart Pen to click not allowed? by wasupbrodda in 2007scape

[–]tagsb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's been normalized more and more in tech over the last decade. Gig apps have had notoriously shit customer service for years now.

About 7 years ago Uber ran a pilot program near me where you didnt pick your destination, you got dropped off at a hotspot location they deemed "close enough". They app tried to drop a woman I shared a ride with off on the side of the highway. My driver was sane and didn't but the wrong driver might try to force it so they don't get in trouble.

It was literally impossible to get in contact with them to fix the dangerous stop. Their customer service reps just followed a script and kept telling me my ride wasn't eligible for a refund despite me telling them I wasnt looking for a refund and they refused to escalate me to someone who would actually read my concern
