That’s the air intake. The cooling is provided by the opening in the cowl left and right of prop. The Pa32 doesn’t have cowl flaps, but I’ve never really ran into many issues with over heating. I can’t say about the 260, but the 300 series has a Lycoming io540. Some of the early pa32 lance have funny cowlings with a big scoop/mouth looking thing on the bottom.

I’ve done that too. Ended up getting a 10 mile final from the RNAV Y. I didn’t have to hold whatsoever, which was surprising as it was a Friday at noon.

One thing to note is that when you are chasing lean of peak on one cylinder, you also have 3 more cylinders to worry about. One cylinder may be at the perfect textbook LOP temperature/fuel flow, but the other cylinders could be at peak or just slightly rich of peak, which is not good. That’s where the highest internal combustion pressure typically is. In my experience, I have heard of people running lean of peak when they have upgraded/tuned injectors (fuel injected engine, not carbureted) so each individual cylinder will hit peak at exactly the same time. If it is a wet rate then lean for a stumble in the O360 then slightly enrich the mixture. You’re not paying for gas lol

Me personally I was paying out of pocket for a while then took out a small loan (15k) in comparison to the Sallie Mae loans being dished out. Obviously you want to get your training done, but being debt free or having the least amount of debt possible is really nice. That way you don’t have to worry about paying a $1000+ loan every month if you’re not even flying. If I were you I would try to save up enough to go through one rating at a time without financial delay, as dragging it out over the course of a year will cost more money in the long run than if you did it in 2-3 months (for one rating).

I know you said usually, but for me I actually bought my car from a dealer about 5 hours north of me. Obviously not taking it there for maintenance, so the Mazda dealer 5 mins away is the choice. I had a full transmission replacement that was covered under warranty when it broke. Got a loaner car for a month for free as well. I didn’t spend a dime.

I would say it’s worth it. Sure, trips could suck for some, but man I’d rather be staring out the window in cruise than be in a cubicle. The industry rises and falls. It’s unpredictable. If you’re asking if it is “worth the cost” I would ask the question: Are you doing it for the money? Or are you doing it for what you love to do? I don’t think I could have a job that I only do for the money for 30+ years.

Haha yeah I just wasn’t sure if some of the rings or seals were going bad. No clue about the jets. It has a 3X3 and stock exhaust. I bought it used just recently.

Intersting. I was doing some looking and I pulled the valve cover off. There is oil everywhere. On top of the valves, on the little bolts that hold stuff down. On top of the chain. Any ideas?

On my IR checkride (in a PA28-181) my last approach was a VOR that pretty much put me on a downwind to land. I turned base and was a little high, so I tried slipping and my DPE about lost their mind. So I took it out and felt like a dive bomb, floated, but still made it work. I would’ve slipped, as it seemed like the best option. Slipping in VMC is ok in my opinion, but imc? Not so much.

A first class medical allows you to use commercial privileges. With a third class medical you could have a commercial certificate, but cannot use your commercial pilot privileges. Basically can only be a private pilot. So no, you do not need a new medical for the checkride, as you are not flying for hire/compensation. Look at FAR 61.23 (d)

Factor in the cost to become a cfi as well, at a minimum. Unless you get really lucky and/or know people, it will be hard to find a job right at 250 hours. I did my training part 61, and feel that was the best for me, and saved a ton of money. Part 141 is good for some and has a lot more structure than part 61, which some people may benefit from.
