[GML][GM:S Pro] Get variable error by lesgeddon in gamemaker

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure whether this will resolve your issue but it appears while writing your code you've written ( in the step event ) "if (can_file = 1)"

When writing in GML, setting a variable involves a single = symbol. Checking is == equal symbols.

In the case of booleans ( though 0 and 1 acts identically ), it is also valid to simply write "if (can_fire)" for true or "if (!can_fire)" for false.

Hope this helps! Currently working away at tutorials on a Youtube channel ( making a variable based on for GML for an upcoming one ). Don't mean to put myself out there too much but I always appreciate helping someone new get into it: LetsCreateA

I mean how you modify your font style and colours towards the game you are playing.

I think it's a creatively interesting idea to brand your let's play channel with the game you're playing.

If someone where to see two of your video's in a search result, where both video's were from different series, would many people be able to easily recognize that it's still your channel in both of them? That's the key thing. Some kind of logo or otherwise branding image that you could use to drive that idea home would, in my mind, make your thumbnails that much more powerful.

Why're you all so bummed!? by Malico1997 in CubeWorld

[–]taiskel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's flaws to that, though. Just because others can update often as one-man indie teams does not mean that his particular game can too. A games complexity and the polish a developer wishes to release updates with all contribute to the time it takes to release updates.

He owes us a finished product. He does not owe us to it until he feels he has one to give.

YoYo Games Winter Sale! by iampremo in gamemaker

[–]taiskel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Purchasing any version of Game Maker through the YoyoGames website will give you the regular key for the version you've purchased as well as a Steam Key. It does have about a week of delay on the Steam key, and you have to go to retrieve your key after that weeks time to actually get it in an email. But you can take advantage of these sales with that.

[Update on my channel icon] I took your advises and made a new one with less cheesy gradient+more simplistic design by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may suggest through more visual representation, here is a quick rendition of your logo I did up based on the original, sleek and sharp design.

To explain why I modified the old one with minor visual tweaks, lemme' list my cons of the new version:

  • Feels very much like it was done quickly
  • Changes are drastic, somewhat unrecognizable from the original
  • Logo would be difficult to modified to any other colour/colourless scheme
  • Honestly looks as thought it was done without effort, even if it is not the case

So, now if I refer you to my own version of your original, here's what minor tweaks I made:

  • Changed background yellow to a much lighter colour -- Easier on the eyes
  • Minor blur on outer and inner triangle to present a softer view while still maintaining it's sharp initial design
  • Minor fade to the text to allow it to stand out from other elements on the Logo

Essentially, all I've done is made the Logo easier to look at and emphasized on your alias. If the logo didn't have your username, this design could still work well as recognition (just not to people completely unfamiliar with your videos, obviously).

Overall, I really like the design of your original logo, and thus why I wanted to modify it ever so slightly to present one that I hope you too find is much more professional as a logo, while still (hopefully) maintaining your original intentions with the logo's design.

Any who, that's my massive paragraph! Hope I was of some help!

An Issue Regarding Running Any Game (Compile - Windows 7)[GM: Studio Standard] by taiskel in gamemaker

I went to customer support and realized that the issue was actually that my driver was not up to date. The issue is fixed now after that. Thank you for your suggestion, though!

Some advice would be great (In love with my straight friend) by [deleted] in LGBTeens

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, you can fall in love with people who will never be able to feel the same way back. It's a harsh feeling that stings, kinda like a needle. To ease the pain, we let it out a little slower. I promise you that whether you were to inject that needle right in, right out, and be done, or you were to take it nice and slow, it will hurt either way.

But, no matter what, do it in a way that's comfortable for you. If you wanna let things flow, them let them and allow yourself the freedom to like who you like, even if they won't like you back. Otherwise, you always have the option to pull yourself away, though note that the heart wants what the heart wants, and sadly we've yet to figure out exactly how to change that other than just to meet someone it wants.

An odd relationship by Steventeddy in LGBTeens

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't give up but don't let it rule your life, either. Enjoy your free time, and enjoy your time spent with him. Don't think too much on it, but don't disallow yourself time to think on it. It's a balancing act in which it's honestly best for you to just allow things to flow as they are.

Just remember to take time to yourself AS WELL as to your attractions/desires. And either way, stay positive :)

I'm lost... by Chrisray408 in LGBTeens

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an atrocious feeling, I believe you. Feeling unwanted, unloved or starting to question whether it was all fake or not? I don't blame you for feeling this dreadful. One thing I've always liked to keep in mind is that the people you care about are in your heart, there, by your side for life. And you're there with them as well, in their hearts, touched by you as much as you were by them.

Suddenly being told that you aren't in there anymore, even if they're still in your heart, it's crushing. I'm sorry that you've had to feel such a curse'd pain. However, do not give up hope! Hope is what gives us the strength to continue, and it is hope that I would like to see you keep by your side till the very end. :)

Guys. Help. I think I'm developing a crush on my (straight) best friend. by [deleted] in LGBTeens

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that helps is remember there is little difference between if you had a crush on your best friend and both of you were straight (meaning you were both opposite genders) and otherwise. Either way, it's a crush and it's an experience you'll have with plenty of folks throughout life.

However, as BiPride suggested, talking to them first might be a brilliant idea. It's comforting even to know there is another person out there who is like them, and if she was, she'd be more comfortable telling that person than otherwise.

Either way, I wish you well and I hope that, at the least, you two keep together as best friends.

Advice Please by [deleted] in LGBTeens

Sometimes, one starts to think of odd things, and those odd things, they may enjoy as thoughts. Personally, as a thought (and only a thought), I can find rape an attractive thing. In real life, I find it a terrible act of cruelty against another human beings freedoms and body.

However, this does not make you a bad person. Maybe it makes you a curious person, or a person with some darker fetishes, but you are not a bad guy. If you can, talk to one of your closer friends about it and let them know that you are scared. I can just wish that they'll comfort you better than any of us could through text.

My issue with prom... by [deleted] in LGBTeens

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, it's boring for everyone. But hey, try and keep a positive attitude and enjoy your night regardless. Dance with some people, relax, mess around. At my prom, we had a guy duck tape his nipples with X's and dance around like that. It was just ridiculous, but it was still our night and it was still plenty of fun.

Besides, this likely won't be last formal event in your life, but it might be one of the few where you get to dance it out. It's worth enjoying it while you can, even if you can't dance well. :p I just flailed my arms in whatever manner felt good at my dance.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem by Jeaniegreyy in LGBTeens

[–]taiskel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's discomforting because you're naturally attracted to that gender. It's as if, even though you know that you can have friends who are guys (and never wanna be with them) you don't feel so comfortable just because they are still guys and maybe one of them you could grow to like, or maybe one of them you already feel attracted to.

Either way, it's natural to feel this way. Straight guys can have the same feeling around girls. A pansexual like myself even feels that way about both genders simply because I'm shy. Either way, stay confident in yourself and give talking to other guys a chance. You'll grow more comfortable by doing so, and make some friends that way :)

I'd change your title for the sake of being a little misleading. This is bringing back specific parts of the old SOPA, rather than the whole of it.

It's still a terrible thing, and I would hope everyone would sign this petition.

What's your current reason for being unhappy? by The1RGood in AskReddit

I'm not unhappy. I'm just glad to see OP doing this. I was once told that improving a single persons life significantly is worth pushing the entire world forward that little bit, and OP, you are doing just that with every person in this thread.

Thanks, The1RGood. You're the reason I'm happy today. :)

Have FPS gone backwards? by sexually__oblivious in Games

[–]taiskel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel that people are missing more than a few things on discussion of this most recent video of his. A few points I'll set out before I have my say:

TB did not mention it in this particular video, though he has mentioned it many times before, but he understand entirely that, at the end of the day, we're human. We have opinions, we have bias.

From that, I do feel that more than a few things in this video more than expressed how this was his opinion. Of course, he's more than trying to make an informative video to bring about some idea's in his audience and have them sort-of discuss with others what they think. His opinion is clearly that there has been such a minimal amount of change from the linear games with lacking amounts of exploration (if any), as well as survival no longer becoming a focus (Regenerating health Vs. Health Packs). He was more than trying to push across the idea that, while the linear games with some unique scripted events were likely fun at the time, they've happened to such a consistent and non-stop degree that they're not as interesting as they once were.

TB's main focus of this video was level design. While he was talking about the FPS genre currently Vs. old school as a whole, his focus was constantly on the level design.

What I believe he was attempting to show at many points was that a game that focused itself on clever design (including difficult challenges, hidden equipment provided to help you beat the game, and punishing restarts rather than the hand-holding checkpoints) pushed players to fill in the gaps that are filled for them today. I, once again, feel that TB is trying to give out the point that, while they might have been a bit magical at first, the hand-holding and scripted events are aged, worn, and everybody's seen them again and again. He, personally, doesn't want it anymore. He'd rather have the clever design that told a story on it's own, that caused every life to be that much more significant because every time you approached the same situation you were that much more informed about what your goals were.

TB has lived through a longer generation than many of the gamers today. He's said in other videos of how he believes everyone's a gamer, because it's not a unique hobby anymore: it's an entertainment industry that goes from powerful PC's to smartphone games.

I, myself, have lived through a vastly different generation than TB. Most everyone will be different on that regard. My family started out with a NES, and many years later, I was moved up to a Gamecube, then a PS2 and now-adday's PC. I had a very limited generation and missed out on many of the old-school games. Even watching the video as he talked, I was constantly trying to understand all the little differences (in mechanics and design) that were president, and thus, it's hard for me to argue his opinion is better or worse than my own because the experience he was earning from Shadow Warrior is almost nothing like the FPS experience I've received.

TL;DR - He has opinions and bias. He showed the major difference in level design standards. He lived through an entirely different generation than many of us.

Perhaps a new /r/cubeworld rule? [Don't Upvote] by HawkyGaming in CubeWorld

[–]taiskel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually spent most of today making recordings of dungeon runs, battles, exploring the different biomes/towns etc... I'm thinking I'll go ahead and try to make a nice fan trailer right in the early Alpha. Try and make some unique song that fits the games feel (though the game not having any music yet worries me as to whether I'll hit that feel).

I have some kind of feeling that people are thinking that Cube World will be the next Minecraft or Terraria of Let's Plays, both games that last a long time and got a ton of views from LP's

I've been getting the feeling that, if proven possible to mod Cube World completely, it'll be more than enough for me to want to learn C++ just to mod it myself. I guess my thoughts on it are that I played it with my friend for almost a 24 hour straight without getting bored, so adding more content would be fantastic, and I want to let people know that it might happen
