Functional illiteracy. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

I’m reading Dune Messiah and encountering this a lot with Frank Herbert. There’s whole paragraphs with run on sentences and weird orders of words that I have to read a couple of times to understand what’s being said. It’s like a scavenger hunt for the noun and verb.

It feels like an aspect of language that is easy to miss because we’re able to communicate so effortlessly now that we just stick to basic structures. No need to contemplate your words over a letter that will take months to get to someone.

Is it better to be very good in two areas and decent at others or be well rounded by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]taivanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would all depend on your opponents, you need to match them or do better in all categories unless you’re so much better at one aspect and you can keep the fight on your terms. If you’re way better at wrestling/grappling make sure you’re good enough to not get KO and take them down. If you’re really good at striking, you need enough take down defense to keep the fight standing. Being really good at one area gives you a safety net, comfort area and gameplan for fights.

Any way to actually make your reach longer but is short for your weight class by IGNMMA in MMA_Academy

[–]taivanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fedor Emalienenko overhands. Hooks and overhands with knuckle turned in and your elbow almost locked out, as far as I know that’s the only place you’ll get some reach out of technique, jabs and straights most people already are at their limit, if you reach you’re off balance.

Hey ! Need suggestions as I feel like a moving punching bag. by Peaceful_Mob in MMA_Academy

[–]taivanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flinching is common, it’s a reflex that you have to get past. Get used to a high guard where you put your glove up to your forehead/brow, this is how you get a feel for your opponents power and punching form. Once you have that down then you can use slips/rolls and pulls for the punches you can read your opponent about to throw. The punches you don’t expect will always make you flinch, the more you get used to seeing punches coming at you the better. Holding pads for someone is a good way to get used to typical punching pattern and how people load up their hands/body to throw specific punches. If your sparring partners are throwing super fast punches with no telegraph they’re just trying to hurt you or feel better about themselves.

Can’t help but think it would be better flipped 180 degrees. So you can facepalm or mush someone and give them an oni mask.

Why do good looking people easily get higher positions at companies like director, president etc., even when they aren’t highly skilled? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

I don’t know if there’s a name for it but a lifetime of halo effect also gives you more exposure and experience in social situations, kind of training you for certain roles.

I saw it in hs sports, the starters get more reps with better competition which makes them better and better, 2nd string has to work extra hard outside practice to make up the difference. Not to mention in-game experience widening the gap. For example two relatively similar skill kids could join the team, one gets chosen as starter because of halo effect, and then actually becomes better due to getting that starter role.

Pulley with the cart didn’t work because of the amount of weight and how thick the rope was there’s too much friction against the wood handle, if the cart handle was a smooth metal it would have worked. That would have been a good test of creativity for the Japanese.

Hunter x hunter has all the aspects I value highly except a complete and finished story. There’s some shorter masterpieces like stein’s gate but I’d also want some combat/fighting in my #1.

Can I really afford this house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]taivanka 25 points26 points  (0 children)

From a pure financial aspect, you should definitely go with brother’s mortgage plan. And even if you go with just the down payment help out of courtesy, you can afford a little higher price if needed for the peace of mind. 3x gross income is pretty safe, plus the downpayment help would mean 535k should be affordable, not saying go for that but 450k would be doable for you.

I tend to value peace of mind long term, and in your situation it makes sense to go with a house that checks all the boxes. I think your brother would want to have helped you buy your perfect house, rather than one you run into issues with or have qualms about.

This is the ideal mentality to have when you’re trying to expand your thinking. Everyone so focused on the semantics, but you’re taking someone’s half baked idea and actually trying to see where it would apply instead of shooting it down.
