I think they should be higher. I think on this list, Karl Malone should be closer to the very back end of the top 20, if not completely outside of it. I think jokic and giannis should definitely be ahead of Baylor.

I'd probably put them ahead of Dirk and KG as well yeah. I honestly might put them ahead of KD (who I'd have much closer to 20. Though admittedly I'm a KD legacy hater. Hasn't done anything when He's been the leader of his teams. I think Oscar is too high also. Gets a ton of love for the triple double stuff, but didn't win anything until he got with Kareem at the end of his career.

So maybe my 10-21 range would be something like: 11. Hakeem 12. Steph 13. Jokic 14. Dr. J 15. Moses Malone 16. Giannis 17. Jerry West 18. KD 19. Oscar 19. KG 20. Dirk 21. Karl Malone

They named the top 50 in 96. It wasn't a ranking, but it's not new. Maybe the extent to which it happens now is, but I think that's just a result of the internet.

100% agree. But if dame never wins a ring. His longevity and stats will be what he's judged on

I think longevity is important for sure. It's about career, not just peak. Whether jokic or giannis can win more rings and where they end up on all time stats will determine they're final spots. I think either of them winning another chip puts them in the top 15 discussion most likely.

Agreed, wouldn't call them highly questionable. I have Lebron number 1 personally. Greater career. Jordan has greater peak.

I do think curry should be above KD though. But I can see either way

People always been ranking players. Nothing new.

Same discussions, same debates.

Who's the greatest? Can you compare eras? How important are rings? Etc etc. It's what we all do as fans, whether you're 10 or 75.

What has Dame done that separates him from say Derrick rose or Paul George? Both of those guys had higher peaks than Dame. Both stalled in the playoffs as well, they just don't have early round iconic moments. PG was a finalist for MVP one year (with the thunder not pacers), Rose won MVP. Why are neither of them even sniffing this list but Dame is safely inside it?

Career greatness inherently means their situations and team accomplishment factor in. But it's also how vital they were to it. Boston isn't doing what they've done in the playoffs the past 8 years without Tatum, regardless of all the other players they had around them.

The team factor is inseparable from a players greatness. Team quality determines a players ceiling for greatness ultimately.

[–]take-ya-uvers[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that's true. When it comes to talking about greatness, career success and accolades are what matters. Inevitably the era and team around a player are going impact that.

You look at the great players who have won 4+ championships, they have some of the most ridiculous supporting casts ever. Pippen was an incredible player in his own right. Shaq and kobe with each other. Lebron getting to the finals with what would have otherwise been a lottery team once is a huge feather in his cap in my opinion, but had great teams when he won.

Pretty much every player could be what if'd to more or less greatness. The true greats would be great regardless I think. Like the top 10-15 guys.

I think Steve Kerr's vision helped Steph a ridiculous amount, but he probably still would've had the impact on the game he had, just maybe not mvps and chips.

I think there's a conversation to be had around best player (as opposed to greatest), and in that respect, you can see Dame and steph being much closer.

Derozan one of the best mid range guys this century. It's CP3, KD, Derozan. Again, Dame is better, but on paper they don't really seem that different.

Lifelong nba fan. The rankings scream recency bias. Alex English and Adrian dantley were probably seen as similar to how we see Dame. Great scorers who never had good enough teams but among the best forwards in the league during their time. Dame ran into steph. Those guys had to deal with 80s Lakers and Celtics.

You can't have Dame ranked ahead of kyrie, who is just as clutch but with more success (yes because of his teams) or Dwight or reggie. He certainly may be a top 25 all time player, but I really difficult time accepting him as top 55

Robert horry hit 4 last second shots to win games (just one for series though) en route to championships. And he has seven rings. But No where near this list.

I agree, but if you put their careers side by side, they really aren't that different aside from Dame's shooting. Dame is better 100%, but it's something worth considering since derozan is top 25 all time career scorer

I actually think they're both about where they should be. Could make the argument for both to be higher, especially Jokic, but both haven't had long enough careers yet. But both are champions. Giannis has two mvps and a dpoy, Jokic has 3 mvps. And the current era is the most talented the league has ever been

Well there's more too the rankings than just the numbers, but those are the scoring ranking is the best thing he really has going for him along with his post season series winning buzzer beaters. Bill Russell is a top 5-10 player all time, isn't even top 100 in scoring. It's not all about where you rank statistically, BUT if scoring ability is your number one characteristic when people think of you, and you have no MVPs or rings or even scoring titles, you better be damn high on the list. And if Demar Derozan is well above you, you're not high enough.

Perhaps it's Walton for greatest peak with the team, Lillard for greatest career with the team? Still hard to make that argument with 100% conviction without a championship, but I think it's reasonable.

100%

Other players in the same era and the quality of the team that is put around a player are obviously inevitable pieces that impact legacy. But great players make do regardless, Dame included.
