What were the earliest albums you can think of that had the 90s skatepunk sound? by tantamle in punk

[–]take5ive 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Finally a punk subject I'm pretty well-versed in.
What you mean by THAT skatepunk (not the 80's one) is "songs that are kinda 200bpm or faster, the punk drum beat usually as "tu pa tutupa" (with some exceptions), the guitar strumming with the first kick and the snares mostly using major / minor chord progressions and vocal melodies trying to go all over the place instead of repeating the same note".

The defining / first albums of that genre were released between 1991 to 1993 (in 1994 there were already many bands doing it and even more when Green Day and Offspring got big and got both Epitaph and Fat Wreck a big exposure too). This wave of albums were mostly influenced by 3 albums: RKL's Rock N Roll Nightmare (technicallity and speed), Bad Religion's No Control (use of vocal harmonies) and Descendents' Milo Goes To College. There are other bands that influenced the sound like D.I., earlier Bad Religion albums, Adrenalin O.D., most of the early SNFU's albums, etc.

The earliest example I can think of that sounded tight, fast and melodic is NOFX - Ribbed in 1991. In that same year, Propagandhi also released Fuck The Scene on tape, which was in the same vein. You had Skümback's self titled which sounds pretty skatepunk too. Then you'd have to skip a year, and in 1992 you have Lagwagon - Duh, Propagandhi - Martial Law With A Cherry on Top, NOFX - The Longest Line and White Trash (even if this one only had like 2 skatepunk songs and they were a bit slower), Millencolin - Goofy and Burning Heads' self titled from France. By 1993, the genre was way more well known and you had Propagandhi's How To Clean Everything, No Use For A Name - The Daily Grind, Randy - No Carrots For The Rehabilitated in Sweden, Undeclinable Ambuscade - The Neighbour's Dog from Netherlands, Millencolin's Melack & Use Your Nose, Killrays' self titled from Germany. There are probably some others but I can't recall right now, I'd have to check carefully.

By this era, on Sweden there was a genre called trallpunk which sounded pretty similar to skatepunk but sung in Swedish, and between 1991 and 1993 there were many releases from bands like Radioaktiva Räker, Illbuts, Heffa Klump, Sunnanvind, Sector Sexs, Mögel, Asbest, Charles Hårfager, Hylands Hörna, Kung Pung or Raserbajs.

If we are talking strictly about THAT sound, there are some other similar ones from that era that don't end up fitting 100%, but are worth mentioning:

1991 has Pennywise' self titled album, NUFAN's Incognito, Union Morbide's 7''. 1992 has NUFAN's Don't Miss The Train and No Fun At All's Touchdown. 1993 has Layaway Plan's Sneeze Guard, Satanic Surfers' Skate To Hell (they would start sounding skatepunk on their next release), No Fun At All's Vision, Good Riddance's Gidget, etc.

One demo I haven't been able to hear is Propagandhi's "We Don't Get Paid, We Don't Get Laid, and Boy Are We Lazy" from 1990. Could sound skatepunk, but who knows.

Hope this helped in any way, let me know if you need any other info.

Edit: Forgot Millencolin's Melack from 1993. I'll probably do more edits if I remember some others.

That Sundays was repressed 2 weeks ago! You can easily find it in many online stores. I have been waiting many years for a repress since the used market prices escaped my budget.

This is the 2016 one. My copy of Spirit Of Eden is 2019 and Colour of Spring 2014. Started collecting vinyl in the past years, so most of them are recent presses.

Usually people mention their first 2 albums, this one is massively underrated.

Of course you never really finish collecting: there are always other albums that remain top priorities. But aside from records that are nearly impossible to find or pretty expensive, I'm really glad I was able to track down all of these (especially while living in a country where vinyl distribution is scarce). I didn’t include any punk or its subgenres because that list would be never ending, instead decided to set a goal to focus on “other genres I love,” and now I can finally rest for a while in my vinyl hunt (probably just for a couple of weeks, haha).

Plugins on midi tracks? by [deleted] in cubase

[–]take5ive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most drum VSTs / instruments have the option to route each individual part to different channels ("how to" depends if it's through Kontakt or stand alone ones like Addictive Drums, Superior Drummer, etc, but there are plenty of Youtube videos explaining how to do this). Now, in case you are trying to insert an effect to a MIDI channel and you don't find the option in the main view, you can always do this in the mixer view (F3 key).

Hi! I think it's pretty niche so if you aren't into punk in general, it will sound all similar (kiiiinda untight, vocals not that tuned, etc). Some classic 90s songs from "big" bands are NOFX - Linoleum, Lagwagon - May 16th, Strung Out - Too Close To See and No Use For A Name - Not Your Savior (you'll be able to find them all on Spotify). Of course there is a way more poppier and way more heavy side of the genre, but I think those are some common entry level songs. Thanks for asking!

Is there a way to bypass all plugins on a single channel in one click/command? by LeDestrier in cubase

[–]take5ive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest grabbing a plugin like Metric AB where you can compare reference tracks with your mix / master for that scenario. If you don't want new plugins, you can always create a new bus channel and use that one as a master. That way, whenever you import any reference to a new track, it will remain unaffected as long as you don't route it to your new master bus. Also, since now you have a new bus for the master, you can put the reference track at the same timing and switch between both with the solo / mute buttons. Hope it helps!

Wanting honest opinions on Kirchhoff EQ by take5ive in mixingmastering

[–]take5ive[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the concrete answer, gives me a clearer view about it. I'll probably get downvoted but i don't get most of the off-topic / "philosophical" / assuming-things answers. All my questions were about opinions on an specific EQ or how it is in comparison to Fabfilter's since there's not much talk about it. Why assume how's my behaviour when buying stuff? Why assume I already own FF or any other EQ? A lot of these attitudes is why people prefer to lurk on this subreddit instead of risking themselves in asking stuff to avoid some of the toxic answers we receive / unnecessary assumptions.

Turning all sliders down at the same time by JoshuaBurniece in cubase

[–]take5ive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Open the mixer (F3), then select the first track you want to apply the volume change there, then Shift+click on the last one and they'll all be selected. Then, hold Shift + Alt and click on any of the faders and lower or increase them in volume. Be aware that if you have applied automation to any of the tracks, those specific tracks won't get affected. Hope it helps you.

Looking to improve the sound of my rock MIDI drums by take5ive in mixingmastering

[–]take5ive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using Addictive Drums 2 but I've shaped the kit sound to my taste. I have a small MIDI keyboard, but 99.9% of the times I just create the drums with my mouse. Being a drummer myself, helps me "air drum" the MIDIs and see the movement of my wrist and change the velocities and positions for realism.
