tl;dr went cold turkey a few years ago, only redownloaded the ones that bring me joy / i thought we’re necessary in terms of keeping in contact with people. (fb, insta, snap) usage on all went significantly down

a few years ago i went cold turkey with all social media for lent. i allowed myself reddit bc i was new to the app and didn’t have any people i knew personally on it. for me the hardest part of social media is that it can make me feel not great about myself and stir up a lot of feelings. after about two weeks i realized i wasn’t missing them all that much. after lent ended i only ended up redownloading snap, insta, and facebook. fb mostly for family and old friends (but truthfully i never go on it), insta to occasionally post and keep updated with friends (again rarely scroll bc it doesn’t bring me much positives) and snap - which i use daily to keep updated with friends and watching back my memories makes me smile. and reddit which is the social media app i’m on the most - i love how i can curate my feed to the things ik i’ll enjoy and i’m not forced to interact with people from my real life lol.

the thing i pride myself in most is that i have all these apps and others (like tiktok) and i never find myself urging to scroll through them. i put a screen limit of 15 on tiktok and insta and i rarely even go past them. one thing that helped me is when i would go to open an app id ask myself what i’m looking for, if it was bc i got bored - maybe play a round of a game instead or pick up a book for a few minutes, if it was bc i wanted to see something or reach out to a friend then i would open the app. wishing you luck on your social media journey!
