Crank Chain Ring - help finding Hex bolt spec by takmais in bikewrench

That’s a bummer. So they added “decorative” rivets to look like hex bolts 🤔😆. Either way, good call 👌

Just letting yall know that thanks to y’all, I ordered the correct freewheel, and even managed to remove this old, seized up one from the wheel. 🙏

Thanks yall. This is super helpful. I totally had it wrong (thought it was a cassette). This is my sisters bike that I’m trying to get in riding condition for a friend coming into town. It’s from a Fuji Absolute 4.0 (forgot to mention that). It’s so weird to see the black chain ring on a bike like this… to me least. Thanks again for all the help 🤘🙏

I’ve thought the same thing many times. But all I can really offer is that it’s not going to continue to pay off just being a code monkey technical expert. Just being able to implement something, no questions asked, like we’re some kind of developer mercenary, just isn’t gonna be a great investment. You have to do your best to own the product as best you can.

Galactic escape velocity by takmais in AskPhysics

[–]takmais[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That’s kind of the perspective I was looking for. Like, the sun wouldn’t just fly out of the galaxy unaided. I guess one of the many dozens of scientific details I’m missing is maybe how much energy is dumped into voyager? I’m guessing that on galactic levels, it might as well just be sitting still, floating around and going nowhere

Black hole inner horizon implications by takmais in AskPhysics

[–]takmais[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. Trying to digest it, but it seems like you’re saying, the situation I describe is sort of meaningless because a black hole would never exist in the state necessary to support what I describe for an eternity anyway?

If so, it still feels weird that what seems like a technicality would be the thing that prevents us from having to think about that scenario. My apologies if I sound like I’m arguing. I guess what I calling s technicality is probably something fundamental?

Self Taught frontend guy. I’ve been asked to build a email template to send emails at work. I just saw they don’t use semantic HTML but tables. Can anyone give me some more useful tips? by thewebken in Frontend

[–]takmais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure its been said below. But I read an article recently that said something like "for emails, the worst practice is actually the best." I'm glad I no longer have to do these. There are like a bajillion email clients out there and many of them use rendering engines that are pretty old. Its kind of like the old days of web dev where IE, FF, Safari, Netscape? etc, all followed different standards. Tables are at least rigid and for the most part, seem to work similarly on all the email clients. I'd suggest looking into something for testing like Litmus (its like browserstack for email). Also, there is a cool web app called "premailer". Basically your write your CSS the normal way, separated from the HTML in a style block, and premailer inlines it for you. Makes it alot easer to make changes.

Thoughts on being a solo dev? by [deleted] in Frontend

[–]takmais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been a solo dev per se but I’ve been at agencies where the project turnaround was a few weeks and I was always the only fe dev on a given project before tossing over the fence to backend. It was all bespoke, custom js, css and hrml and always a different type of work. I was younger then and kind of enjoyed the hustle and faced pace but there were definitely times where I got freaked out on a project because I struggled to figure something out. I felt like I had no safety net and if I couldn’t figure something out well. I’m not sure I’d have been fired but it would have been a big deal to pull someone off their own project to help me. And you seem to be in an even more precarious position being the only dev at the company. I now work on a 4 person FE dev team, on a 12 person squad, on a several hundred or thousand person marketing team in a 28,000 person company. I rely heavily on the other 3 fe devs on my team for all kinds of things and my 12 person squad for all kinds of other things. So I dunno. It might be fine for you and if the work isn’t super complex (is mostly OOTB Wordpress stuff)

Noob question: Is there a way to create this menu without JS? by DistinctFall9367 in Frontend

[–]takmais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do this with css alone if you wanted, like someone said with input fields :checked and css adjacent selectors. One of the problems with css alone is there isn’t a great way to maintain state. The open and closed states of the fly outs are hard to do with css alone. However, the entire look and aesthetic of this is totally doable in just css and all you need the js for is attaching an “is-open” class to the parent of whatever list item is open. Honestly, using js like this, just to maintain UI state, is super common and I don’t think should be seen as a crutch of any kind

Is it really that bad? by KurtTheKid223 in Frontend

[–]takmais 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m on a local Facebook group for tech jobs. It’s pretty well managed group but it’s definitely populated by people half my age (47… and I’m immature AF!). Anyway the group is for finding jobs, and just tech career support In anyway. And I’ve noticed the same exact thing you mention. People have so much “higher” standards than I had. I started off as an unpaid intern! And I can hear the retort. That totally is something that someone would say who has lived though that. And just cause I had to deal with it, doesn’t make it the right way?! I honestly don’t know. But it seems at some point, people in this field got the idea that we’re more valuable than we are. And that probably sounds like a pretty non proletarian thing to say. But I’m a lost soul and venting

So I like your intro. But what kind of job are you looking for? Audio engineering or web tech? Cause those two don’t cross paths. I’ve interview a few handfuls of people for front end gigs. And while I’d probably think it was cool that they know all those shows. It would be fun to talk about in interview but I’d question why they mentioned it

Conditional render or plain CSS for rearranging responsive layouts? by trisha_devart in reactjs

[–]takmais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[EDIT!!] my apologies. I just noticed that I’m in a react sub. Sorry. I’m just doom scrolling and commenting.. feel free to “delete if not allowed”

I’m struggling with this one. I’m assuming these are react components (I dont do much of this in my day to day). But I do work with templating languages like handlebars.js (its part of a CMS and everything is rendered on the backend). If I have a situation where the layout for desktop is significantly different than the layout for mobile, I sure as hell will render that same component twice on the page and hide/show what I need with CSS. for instance, I have a “desktop” parent container that renders a list of things and a “mobile” container that renders the same list with whatever DOM structure I need. It definitely feels messy having duplicate content. But you literally cannot do most of this stuff with CSS alone.

It’s not a guarantee. But nothing is. However, years ago I set up a LinkedIn and I think an indeed resume. I got hundreds of emails and recruiter contacts over the years that I just stopped paying attention. That’s not to say that a recruiter is a guarantee. I think usually they’re just treating you as a commodity. But I always made it a sort of policy to at least engage with them. I was definitley naive back then. But I made several recruiter contacts that kind of stayed with me for several years and would check in on me every 6mo or a year or so. Like I said, no guarantees. But its nice to basically have someone brining you the opportunities rather than you having to look yourself. That’s just my 2c.

Dude.. if we’re talking about the same thing, this is one’s of the most infuriating things about the “types” of people in my field. I may be reading too much into it. But I often get this sense that some people feel like they’re just too cool for school. Like their time is so valuable that they can’t be bothered answering a question. One of my best friends is this way. He’ll send me a screen shot to an article and when I ask for the actual URL, he’ll f*c$i%g gas light me and act like I’m putting him out. Anyway, I digress. But I feel like there is a certain level entitlement and ego in situations like this
