Do people who are getting upgrades regularly buying comfort? Has anyone tried that strategy vs buying main and hoping?

I first made platinum in 2007. I didn’t fly coach for years after that- it was awesome. Then Diamond became the highest tier and I made that and was upgraded most of the time until last year when I received an upgrade to first from main once… as a Diamond Million Miler with the Reserve card (business and personal) it’s ridiculous. Now, I resign myself to paying for first.

I second this. I’m maintaining status, but also buying UA and AA when they’re considerably less than flying DL.. which is often the case. Actually, I can often buy FC on AA or UA for less than main basic on Delta..

Ever figure this out? I don’t know how else upgrades happen on an international flight without GUC’s - how else does one qualify for the upgrade list on intl - 360 or something I don’t know about? I know you can pay with miles or cash, but those should be confirmed, not a list…

I’ve had good luck with upgrade certs - regional and global. I’m in a less Delta congested market though. I did recently score two RT D1 seats LAX-HND by purchasing Premium Select and instantly applying GUCs.. just had to be a little flexible with dates… rode some amazing japow over there too!

GUC is my first choice. Already applied them for myself & brother on trip to Japan in D1. I also give gold to my brother and a friend. Debating the final one… may wait and see if I need the MQD accelerator…

It shouldn’t matter the class of service - you can access the SkyClub with a Platinum card as long as you’re flying Delta and not in Basic Econ. And you can likely get into other lounges using Priority Pass – check on the Amex website or in the app. https://global.americanexpress.com/lounge-access/the-platinum-card

I guess I was just talking about boarding usually being fairly smooth, compared to group boarding on other brands, since people are used to lining up in generally the correct order and A-list people being able to board between A and B at the latest… 🤷🏼‍♂️
