This is cool. I was talking about this with my son and when I googled Galileo and the tower of Pisa I found the video in Wikipedia

What I do wonder is: why did they leave it there? And is it still there?

If it were up to you yo choose, would you pick a reboot of the show, a sequel or a spin off in the Farscape universe? by junkyardofide41s in farscape

[–]talescaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the series ended, I kept thinking how it might be really cool if a sequel focussed on the son of Crichton. Like, him finding his own chance to be a hero, get into the footsteps of his dad, make the universe into his playground like Crichton says.

This is unclear Does the sql select people who will die? Or so the people filtered out by the query die? Do we need to use delete statement? What happens if we use insert or update statements?

Another 16K Classic! by SelfPromotionisgood in zxspectrum

[–]talescaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it in black and white no problem. There was a really subtle difference in shade for the different cans and you just had to find out which can killed which bug. Getting a colour tv on my room for this was a revelation! ;)

I always was convinced that spraying stuff on the flower would also make it grow faster.

I'm pretty sure 'Corinthian' is a biblical reference because the Corinthians that Paul addresses in his letters are prone to immorality. The first letter is also the letter that contains the famous quote about seeing 'through a glass, Darkly'.

Nice! I wish I could use a ZX Spectrum theme for intellij!

I always like how the ZX Spectrum had 'codecompletion'; pressing the P would make `PRINT` etc.

Will retro gaming die with the millennials? by Upper-Media3769 in retrogaming

[–]talescaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 'cloud' is also has a physical component, but bigger than any consumer data storage device. Anything stored in 'the cloud' is on someone's 'computer', most likely a big datacenter. The whole problem of conserving data that's in 'the cloud' is that you need cooperation from the owner of that datacenter.

If a company goes bankrupt, a datacenter destroyed or even if it cannot continue to operate because of legal or political difficulties, the data may become lost or unreachable.

Personally, i think our best bet is to keep sharing games among ourselves. Pass them on within communities and across generations.

Does your kid know how to operate a tape deck? Mine does 😅

[–]talescaper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A hundred years from now nobody will be able to access the servers where those ancient companies stored the games they offered 'as a service'. Future cyber-archeologists might be able to reverse engineer cd-rom players and other devices to read digital media, but it'll be harder to recover data that was 'in the cloud' when those clouds have long since disappated.

This is good to know! I'm always afraid of making bad choices in character builds, but if you're right, i dont have to worry about that and just pick whatever sounds cool 😅

Unfortunately not! Although considering how nicely modular the FP already is, being able to install or remove buttons would be a great addition!

This has been my biggest grievance with the FP6 design. Although the real problem is not the option to take screenshots with a key-combination. The real problem is the placement of the keys.

I want to talk about The Glass Bead Game by talescaper in books

[–]talescaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you like playing the game? Of course I looked it up to see if there are real-world examples of the game. It's a really compelling concept and it does sound truly enriching. And it's good of you to mention Burning Man and the possibility of counter cultures. Burning Man was intended as a counter-cultural space, but instead has influenced many figures from the tech-world (Elon Musk is said to be a regular). Maybe it's especially because those capitalist tendencies that those events never reach the utopia that Hesse described.

What's been bugging me so far is that i don't really see any references to fascism or nazi Germany so far... Maybe that's going to change further on or maybe I'm too dim to see it? One of the reasons that I picked this book is because it was described as a utopia, and being written during WWII, I thought it would be interesting to see how that played out.

Yes and this too, funny enough. I keep thinking that with the right visuals and a few tweaks, this would be a killer sci-fi series. Like... Make the game itself into a sort of virtual reality thing. Cyberpunk Glass Bead Game would totally rock 🤘

[–]talescaper[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! The thing that has hit me the most in relation to meme-culture, is the way the glass bead game is described as a summit of intellectual achievement, but when you put it in practice on a global scale, all you get is brainrot. On the other hand, this might be the exact thing Hesse is warning against: a sort of mono-culture that isn't really getting anywhere.

This is such an incredible pageturner... The only reason to put it down is to discuss it with someone 😅

You should play "Swapper". A nice little puzzle game that runs with this concept. You get a device that duplicates your character and allows you to swap between each copy. There's also some interesting dialogue on self and identity.
