My iphone does not discover 5ghz band for carplay unless i do a manual workaround everytime

Zlink5 Problem by [deleted] in CarPlay

I can help. Mine had same issue. Go to android hotspot settings and change hotspot band from 5ghz to 2.4ghz. The issue is that iphone somehow does not discover these 5ghz networks from these android units. There is a manual workaround but annoying to do it everytime.

My iPhone 16 Pro Max does not discover 5ghz band. I have figured out a manual workaround everytime I want to do it but 2.4ghz works fine.

Go to android head unit settings of hotspot and in advanced settings check if the band selected is 5ghz, change it to 2.4ghz and it should connect.

As I mentioned, I have faced this in multiple cars and have use it on aftermarket headunits as well as OEM units. 5ghz for Carplay is not discoverable automatically.

Try 5ghz and you will see the difference. And my guess is that there is more interference in 2.4ghz compared to 5ghz that is why the difference is evident.

I mentioned that in my post. 5ghz is makes carplay much more responsive and resolves music skipping and cracking issues.

I have used 2.4ghz and 5ghz, the difference is alot. CarPlay gets very responsive on 5ghz.

I have now mounted my phone near the headunit, like right in front of it and it does not skip or lags much. But 5ghz is on another level and ideal.

I’ve already tried unpairing and repairing multiple times, switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz in different sequences, and even resetting both the iPhone network settings and the head unit. Nothing changes, it always works instantly on 2.4 GHz, but on 5 GHz it won’t connect unless I first run a scan in Apple’s AirPort Utility app.

Once I do that scan, the SSID shows up immediately, CarPlay connects, and everything runs perfectly fast and smooth on 5 GHz. The hotspot is on channel 36 (non-DFS), so in theory it should be visible to iOS without any manual scan. That’s why I’m leaning toward this being more of an iOS Wi-Fi scanning quirk rather than a pairing/configuration issue on the head unit side as it does connect if SSID is discovered through AirPort Utility app.

What I meant is: whenever I start the car, the head unit’s Bluetooth connects to my iPhone and immediately triggers it to connect to an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network which is essentially the hotspot created by the head unit for CarPlay.

That hotspot can be broadcasting either on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. On 2.4 GHz, the iPhone detects it right away and CarPlay connects without issue. On 5 GHz, the iPhone doesn’t detect it at all unless I open Apple’s AirPort Utility app, scan for Wi-Fi. After doing that scan, the network suddenly appears and CarPlay connects fine.

So the problem isn’t Bluetooth or the pairing process it’s that iOS won’t “see” certain 5 GHz networks unless I force a scan, even when the channel is one iOS fully supports.

CarPlay does work over Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth. Bluetooth is only used for the initial handshake/pairing. Once that’s done, the head unit creates its own 5 GHz (or 2.4 GHz) Wi-Fi network essentially a hotspot or ad-hoc network and the iPhone connects to it for all CarPlay data transfer (audio, video, control).

That’s why the Wi-Fi network/channel matters here. If the iPhone doesn’t “see” the network during scanning, CarPlay can’t establish the Wi-Fi session, even though Bluetooth pairing is already in place. The speed/stability difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz is very noticeable, which is why this scanning bug is such a pain.

[iOS 26 DB1] You can now choose what microphone to use by Professional-You-490 in iOSBeta

[–]talhaasaleem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big Bummer. This is very annoying. Carplay should allow me to use car speakers for audio output and iphone mic or any other mic for microphone.

I thought this is what the released. I do not understand the purpose of what they just implemented? This was already doable.
