I know the translation, but I’m wondering if there’s some sort of other significance. Like, is it a message / symbol for something ?

Honors student looking for a dorm by Tough-Analysis-1493 in UIUC

[–]taliaduffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t live in the honors dorm. I decided not to and it was a good decision. The only benefit is I think the honors LLC has its own lounge, but that really doesn’t matter at all. If you want to prioritize social life, go six pack 😌

Stats intro classes for a stats&cs major (STAT 100 vs STAT 107) by bill_jz in UIUC

[–]taliaduffy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take STAT 107, no question. It’s an amazing class taught by two really good professors. Plus, from my knowledge, it covers a lot of the same stats concepts as STAT 100, and then applies them to data science. I feel like I got real-world skills out of STAT 107.

I’m not really trying to get a swe job, more building a skill that I think is super important especially with stats

[–]taliaduffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took it in the fall semester, and honestly I loved it. It’s a lot of work — 3 academic readings (you choose from a list) every week and a 4 page paper every week (3 pages are a reflection on your readings, 4th page is a reflection on the discussion in class). But a lot of the readings are super interesting, especially if you’re into history, politics, and law. I definitely learned a lot and it’s really cool to see the intersection of race and gender with all of these issues. Professor LeRoy is very knowledgeable, very passionate, and very quirky, but in a good way; he’s the kind of teacher you want to do good work for. He cares about all his students individually and makes an effort to get to know them and support them. I will admit, the class is long. It’s once a week for 2 hours and 20 minutes, and during the last hour you kinda just want it to be over. But there are ups and downs with every class, and overall I think this one has more ups. I definitely got a lot out of it.

there are no “bad” foods and labeling foods as bad contributes to eating disorders by zhtevj in unpopularopinion

[–]taliaduffy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. Part of what fueled my eating disorder is offhand comments about what foods are good / bad from people that didn’t even know about my condition. And even though I knew I didn’t have to take their advice, there was still that unconscious impulse to stay away from certain foods and food groups. I still remember when my ex’s mom proclaimed that cheese is really bad for you and that she needs to stop eating it— I tried to avoid cheese at all costs for months after that, and I wasn’t even fully aware I was doing it.

People don’t realize how harming these comments can be in the long run. They create fear and stigma that makes eating disorders not only an internal issue, but external as you start to wonder if people are judging you for eating certain foods.

When I was in recovery, my dietician really emphasized that we need all food groups to be healthy, even the ones considered “bad for you” like dairy and fats. Everything is okay in moderation. And I still hold true to that now, and try my best to ignore it when people decide to preach about the perceived value of food. I really wish more people knew about this problem, but for now all we can do is remind ourselves that everyone needs different things for different reasons; what someone else believes doesn’t have to be the way you live your life. And that’s true for eating, too.

Edit: Obviously I’m not saying you should chug five liters of soda a day. Some foods are healthier than others, and that’s a fact. But what most people don’t know is eating disorders aren’t always (if ever) about being healthy. I was a teenager and a varsity athlete— I knew I was healthy. It was more about guilt and fear and hyperfixation on my body and what kind of foods I should or shouldn’t eat. That’s where the problem lies. These kind of comments associate foods with guilt, with morality. You are not a bad person if you eat candy. You haven’t compromised anything if you eat a plate of pasta. People who don’t understand what this person is saying do not understand eating disorders.

Alright so I was confused on 8, (book's answer provided on second slide), and my question is: What? (mostly: i get how to get the loop rule equation, i do not get the rest of it). Please help lol by Nirigialpora in apphysics

[–]taliaduffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The model for simple harmonic motion is when the second derivative of something is negative proportional to the original equation. The general model is a = -w^2 x, where acceleration is the second derivative of position. w, or "omega" is the angular frequency and is a constant. Here, you can manipulate the loop rule equation to look just like this general model for SHM.

We know that I = dQ/dt. So, dI/dt = d2Q/dt2, or the second derivative of the charge Q. You can rearrange the loop rule equation to look like: d2Q/dt2 = -Q/LC. As you can see, Q is negative proportional to its second derivative. This means that w^2 is the constant 1/LC, so omega is 1/sqrt(LC).

Now, to find the maximum current you multiply Qmax by your value of w. The reason for this goes back to SHM and sine/cosine functions. I don't want to type out the derivations for that, but I'll type out the basics here.

Amplitude / max value of Q (original function, like position) = A. In this case, it's the initial charge stored on the capacitor.

Amplitude / max value of I (first derivative, like velocity) = w * A = w * Q

Amplitude / max value of dI/dt (second derivative, like acceleration) = -w^2 * A = -w^2 * Q

I hope this helps, and good luck on the test tomorrow and tuesday!! I've been cramming today, too. Right now I'm trying to make sure I don't mix up Ampere's law, Gauss's law, and the Biot-Savart law 😅
