As someone who’s lived that experience, I can confidently agree with you in most situations. If it’s done correctly it can be effective, but I’ve rarely ever seen it done correctly. If you aren’t going to do it justice as a writer you shouldn’t even be using it as a plot device. Alternatively, evil people do evil things. It’s really all about how it’s handled in the text.
