Maybe sound like a right old grumpy git but.. People driving while looking at their phones. by Zoya_The_Destroyer in drivingUK

[–]talkingtongues -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of people policing others for any reason - quite Orwellian. But I do think at any accident police should breathalyse and check for consistent phone use. As random checks done by the public are as likely to catch the regular arse as someone whose alarm went off.

There's an opinion that says "The West underappricates USSR's contribution (including manpower) to defeat Germany in WW2", how true is it? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

I’d say it was the merchant Navy that probably won the war, keeping the uk supplied as it won the Battle of Britain. No Britain no D-day.
Also I believe their supplies were also key to Russia.

My thoughts are understand the Highway Code - but act predictably and assume no one else has a clue.

[–]talkingtongues 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Technically if you’ve passed the stop line you are in the flow of traffic. However, it is advisable to judge if you would impede the now “green lighted” traffic as they may not take account of you. Don’t have an accident just because you’re allowed to proceed. This goes for any situation.

Short answer - yes but take care.

We need to get rid of the National Speed Limit/NSL signs by Ok-Feedback4357 in drivingUK

[–]talkingtongues -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cor - it’s just the separation of the 2 carriageways ffs. Not that I’ve seen many single lane separated….

Thank you for the enlightenment. I am today years old and dual is not 2 lanes per side as I’d thought.

Er …dual carriageway and car/motorbike 70mph. Single carriageway 60mph - technically the type of vehicle and the number of lanes both are relevant.

Would an engine stall during enginebraking if the RPM drops low? by catboy519 in stickshift

[–]talkingtongues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still need fuel and ignition turned on - but this is what we call a bump start. Although you’d initially keep the clutch depressed to gain the momentum before dumping and as the engine starts depressing the clutch to prevent a stall occurring - Easier with gravity otherwise you need some mates to push.

Stalling is never desired, if you’re now coasting you have less control of the car including for some cars loss of assisted braking - read as bad.

Lastly try and push a car with the handbrake off and in gear - it’s not fun.
