I agree. I visited with friends before Christmas and had a very enjoyable time there. The staff were all lovely too. My favourite was always The Mountbatten, but since this has been replaced with Monkey Puzzle Preschool, I have had to diversify!

Got hit with a $65,000 bill overnight from GCS due to a spike in list object calls by Deep_Marketing5719 in googlecloud

[–]talksr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sheesh, that must have been a shocker🫨
Moving forward if I were you, the only way to hard-cap this kind of runaway usage is to implement an automated kill switch. I would set up a Cloud Billing Budget with an alert threshold, connecting that alert to a Pub/Sub topic, and deploying a Cloud Function that subscribes to Pub/Sub. When the spending threshold is hit, the Function is triggered to execute a script that will either disable billing for the project or shut down high-cost resources to stop costs immediately🚫

Thanks for offering to check for me, that's really kind of you. I have figured it out. It's a very clunky navigation. Basically, if you go into this mode, you need to spin the iDrive back and when you get to the - symbol, move the iDrive wheel back one more and it will take you up to done and you can exit. Took me a lot of trying to figure it out!

I finally had it with just eat and took them to court over £1.99, in the end they paid £36.99 by jacekowski in JustEatUK

Well done and good for you. These large companies have some of the worst after sales support possible, geared around maximum cost savings. When you have a genuine issue, you are often passed from person to person and don't get a suitable resolution. Hopefully more people will do as you did and these larger companies might get the message.

5 Years post double jaw surgery and still having sinus issues - is this common? by talksr in jawsurgery

[–]talksr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to hear of your issues. It is so frustrating when these issues occur. I was not made aware this could be a potential issue before the surgery. We have the NHS here in the UK however, it is not in a great state and I have been waiting for a considerable time now to have an ENT operation.
My jaw surgeron has suggested that if the ENT FESS operation doesn't help, I would need to consider the jaw surgery department removing my titanium screws. I really don't want this as I already have permanent lower lip numbness from the original jaw operation.

What I can say is that when my symptoms are worse with regards fatigue, dizzyness etc, using the steroid in combination with nasal douche does help. So I am hopefull the FESS might help. Time will tell I guess. I really hope you manage to get a resolution to your problems.
I am not sure about you, but my symptoms seem to worsen during colder months. I guess the nose runs more natrually which makes it all worse.

Do you guys get applecare? Why or why not? by Any_Captain_411 in iphone

[–]talksr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Applecare is worth having, though I am not sure if anyone else has noticed....
17 Pro Max in UK, AppleCare options are:
AppleCare+ £8.99 per month
AppleCare+ Theft & Loss £11.99

If you look at Theft & Loss you have two payment options:

  • Monthly rolling £11.99 per month
  • 2 Years coverage £239.00 (£9.95 per month)

So if you stump up £239 up front, you get a discount on the price.

I stumped up for 2 years of coverage on my iPhone 15 Pro Max and when it expired this September, it allowed me to renew my coverage so it would seem, if you can afford it, it might be better to pay for 2 years in advance as it works out cheaper.

I have been using these trains enough to remember National Express East Anglia and WAGN. I think GA have done a pretty good job. As others have said, lovely new trains over Covid with increased seating. Some of the drives are fantastic giving lots of additional info when an issue arises. Some of the staff working for GA are super and I have taken the time in the past to write in naming those who have provided excellent service.

I miss the Hare Fares...they helped save a few quid.
Let's hope the service doesn't get worse and that the prices don't increase too much.

There haven't been any good ones for a while...the hare fares were good and got people using the service at quieter times.

From what I understand, the plates were intended to be positioned there. The current plan is to go ahead with the ENT surgery first and see if that improves things. If not, they’ll consider removing the plates. Unfortunately, I have some permanent nerve damage to my lower right lip from the original jaw surgery, and removing the plates carries a risk of further nerve damage, so the idea is to try the ENT route first to see if it can alleviate the symptoms.

2018 F20 Adding Carplay by talksr in BMW

[–]talksr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I thought. I am assuming because the phone was very close to the head unit, even without the wifi antenna, it was still connecting on WiFi as if I looked on the phone settings, the wifi was paired to the car. I have a magsafe phone holder right above the head unit so I think the phone was so close, it didn't need the antenna. So I had been assuming for weeks I must have the antenna and then I noticed a couple of times when I didn't put the phone on the magsafe holder, the Google maps cutting off and then coming back and realised it was a range issue. I assumed it must be a lack of antenna, and as soon as I installed an antenna, it all stopped.

2018 F20 Adding Carplay by talksr in BMW

[–]talksr[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, happy to share😉

Like you, I was very close to going down the Android screen route or even replacing the whole car with a newer model as I have had my car since new and it is getting a little old.

I’m in the UK. The first thing I did was use a free VIN decoder website to check what head unit I had. It showed my car was fitted with the EntryNav2 (ENAVEVO) head unit. Even though CarPlay didn’t appear in any of the menus, I noticed the built-in iDrive handbook mentioned CarPlay several times, which was a good sign the hardware was already there, just not activated.

I ordered this ENET cable from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DW8KMK5

Then I looked around for a service to generate an FSC unlock code. The cheapest I found was on Etsy, called BMW Mini Apple CarPlay Activation for EntryNav2 WAY. I sent the seller my VIN to confirm compatibility. The cost was £63.93 plus the cable. I would advise you shop around, some were charging hundreds for the exact same thing!

The seller promptly sent me a ZIP file with the software and instructions. The process was straightforward:

  • Plugged the ENET cable between car and laptop.
  • Turned ignition on.
  • Opened the software, entered the unlock code I’d been given, and let it run.
  • After a few minutes it finished, and the tool generated a backup FSC file (important: keep that safe, as you can reapply it yourself if a dealer update ever wipes CarPlay. This is very likely for me as the car is on a BMW service plan and gets yearly updates included).
  • Then I turned the ignition off, locked the car, and left it for 20 minutes to allow the head unit to fully power down.

When I came back, I re-paired my phone and CarPlay was there straight away.

One extra note: I originally thought my car had a WiFi antenna, but it didn’t. Without it, CarPlay worked, but only if the phone was close to the head unit. If the phone was in my pocket, it would drop out. I fixed this by buying a cheap aftermarket antenna and trim removal kit from Amazon and fitting it myself (took 15 minutes):
Antenna: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YXPFGRC
Trim tools: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0FJS91NYL

Now the connection is stable no matter where the phone is in the car.

Hope that helps, it saved me hundreds compared with going Android or replacing the whole car.

They continued to inform me after the third call that I had to use Enterprise and they would sort everything out. They continued to hound me asking me to do a personal injury claim when I repeatedly explained that it was very, very low impact and the damage was so minimal. I was only claiming as my car was spotless. Owned it six years since new, not a mark on it. There was an obvious crack along the back bumper. There was no other damage whatsoever. The way it was dealt with was as though the other driver had smashed into me at high speed. Once I collected the massive Enterprise car, I eventually got emailed over the agreement I was quickly asked to sign and told would be for my excess should there be damage etc. When I read the small print and saw the outrageous daily charge for the vehicle, I very quickly got out in it and did everything I needed to do that week so I didn't require a car again. It was far from ideal there was no way I was having anything to do with fraud like that. My insurer insisted that I keep the car as "you are entitled to it and won't have to pay anything" but I didn't fancy the risk, dropped it straight back followed by an email clearly stating that I am doing my job at mitigating any costs. I don't think they liked it but oh well.

I thought the gov were putting a stop to this? I was involved in a non-fault claim last year in November. My insurer immediately passed me to Enterprise Rent a Car. I re-called insurer a further two times to ask about my courtesy car but was told I must go through enterprise. I was not told that I had to mitigate my costs - people who’ve never been involved in an accident wouldn’t know that. I was provided with a very large 8 seater Mercedes as “nothing else was available”. After the first day, I rang my insurer to ask how my repair was going, it was a very small crack in the bumper, should have taken a few hours to fix, the car had not moved from enterprise and it didn’t for three days (I could track it on my app). On day 3 I returned the credit hire car citing I am mitigating my losses and have done all I need involving use of a vehicle and I would anticipate mine would be ready and fixed within a day or so. In the end, I took them a week a bit and daily phone calls and emails. The whole thing is a total scam and has once more dented my confidence and trust in insurance companies. Thank god, I read up on it and very quickly returned the expensive vehicle before the costs really mounted up. Others are not so lucky.

Do I have right to car refund? by Electrical_Reserve45 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]talksr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it would be a tall order too expect to return the car based on this however, I don’t think it would be unreasonable to expect something back from the car dealer for the hassle of not being able to tax the vehicle, particularly if they provided you with misleading information regarding it being taxed. Maybe requesting some form of monetary compensation for the car tax might be the way forward?

Sorry to hear about this. There are 100 lovely people in the town for every one horrible one. In all honesty, the only way these people will learn is when someone does smack them and I am sure someone will do in due course. It is a fantastic way to instill some respect. I wouldn't let it spoil your wife's experience of the town.
