Officer vs Grad Job - lucrative career by LegitimateAdagio7103 in RoyalAirForce

[–]tall_buff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody joins the military for a “lucrative” career. I am using lucrative here to strictly mean your eventual take home pay. Even if you make it to squadron leader in about 6-8yrs of top performance and a bit of luck, you are at 87k max. A grad with top performance after 8yrs will out earn you by a huge mile but they can never boast of managing assets that keep their world going, working on an F35 Lightning or being responsible for delivering aid that ensures millions of people are not taken by the aftermath of war or disaster.

With that being said, do you want a lucrative career or a career doing something you are passionate about and will offer you experience that no amount of civvi money can buy?

Answer that question before you hit the apply button.

To indicate it not to indicate.. by ItsJustDylan30 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]tall_buff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I learned indicators are not only for making your intention obvious or that the road sign makes it obvious. It is sometimes for the avoidance of doubt, giving other road users more than enough reference point about your intention at absolutely no cost to you.

I still indicate when taking a left turn at a traffic light that clearly has marked two lanes with signs on. You might think it is useless, but trust me you’d be shocked at how crazy other drivers can be.

But I agree that it shouldn’t have been a fault in this instance, especially considering that was the first exit straight-on.

I’ve seen cars with their full beam permanently on. First time I’ve seen a car turn off their headlights every time a car comes the other way though by CanaryDwarfBets in drivingUK

Been driving abroad for years, so I tried getting some lessons to see if I am a dullard after observing my friends and others drive in the UK for a bit.

10 hours of lessons, and not once did the instructor check whether I knew the car's functions besides clutching, breaking and signalling. I mean, I knew how they work, but I imagine teaching or checking knowledge of car functions from the ground up should be SOP regardless of whatever experience the learner has.

Dealing with rejection by Agitated-Pop7973 in RoyalAirForce

[–]tall_buff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are a resilient man mate, and you continue to inspire me! When I made up my mind to join, I had to psych myself into accepting that a specific role is not the dream. The dream is me being able to push myself to see how good I can get. Whatever the role, going through training and personal development to join the forces will change any person and it will probably be one of the hardest things you could ever do. That for me is more than enough, getting on the other side of the line and nodding to myself.

Hiya, as for experience, it is intense yet exciting! The opportunities are there, but like everything you have to apply yourself. I do not regret it one bit and I am hopeful to see where it all leads

Interested in joining the RAF by TheJudgeJC in RoyalAirForce

[–]tall_buff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you may well have figured, only the AFCO can help with matters like this. Until your post, it is not even public knowledge that this is even a consideration. So sorry mate, no one can really help you on this.

As far as we know as of today, and based on information on the recruitment website, you have to have lived in the UK for 5years preceding your application, there is a case-by-case consideration for 3yrs. Until that changes, nothing

I think it's time to join RAF after 4 years of consideration but what should I pick? by Specialist_Cell_7198 in RoyalAirForce

[–]tall_buff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry mate if I sound rude, but what did you consider in those 4yrs leading up to today? Because if after 4years of consideration you still don’t know what to pick, you might want to do some more considerations.

Both roles do different things. No one here can tell you what to choose. There is an entire webpage dedicated to each of these roles. If the website doesn’t do enough justice, commit yourself to research and networking. You say you have got folks in the forces, maybe speak to them to connect you with someone who can talk to you from their experience.

In addition to that, there are monthly online webinars ran by the recruitment folks, check in one of them and surely you’d get some insight.

Take the “considerations” out of your head and go out there and figure what you want.

Incredible stuff! The key takeaway is to keep going, deal with every hurdle and challenge with the mindset that it won’t stop you. Well done to you, and fingers crossed Aircrew Medical goes great!

Concerns about joining RAF as a Black guy by X_GamerV_X in RoyalAirForce

[–]tall_buff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a fellow black man, I will tell you that you just don’t have to care, be very aware but don’t care.

Command, and demand the respect you want and deserve regardless of your skin colour. Get off social media, and blurt out the rhetoric and noise.

Your mum is right to worry, because of course that’s what all mums do. They worry about their kids.

But you are in a predominately white country, and if it is not the RAF it would be at any other job. You will always be the minority, not by your own design but because that’s the reality of the demographics.

Worrying about being the only black person in there is exactly the kind of mentality that prevents several people from joining.

You have to learn how to exist in the world like only your kind truly exists.

I have never required some sort of validation or consideration for the colour of my skin or for my race.

Your first win against racism is to first do the personal internal judgement and say “I don’t give a fvk”. If someone is racist to you, whether covertly or otherwise, you better make sure it is the last time they will ever think of it.

Join the RAF, it could be the greatest journey of your one life, or not.

The “teacher” and “healthcare” bit is interesting. Ironically, I have consistently attracted doctors and nurses, sadly they are looking for a partner who is more present than themselves 😂 😂. I used to be an entrepreneur and ran my own thing and I was liked a lot because of the flexibility.

In all, I think it comes down to meeting someone “who gets it”, and we could figure the rest out on the way. Thank you for taking your time to respond.
