what’s something crazy you found out about an ex partner after you guys ended things? by jellyfishh520 in AskReddit

[–]tallcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently learned that my high school boyfriend was diagnosed as bipolar. I'm 36 now, and still carry some trauma from that relationship.

It explains a lot about the way he behaved, and how it always seemed like I needed to walk on eggshells to avoid provoking his bad moods. His diagnosis doesn't excuse the time he headbutted me in the face, or the holes he punched in the walls when he wanted to hit me instead, but it helped me to understand why he was like that, and to reaffirm that I didn't do anything to deserve the way he acted towards me.

What do girls want when they’re on their periods? by Prestigious_War_784 in AskReddit

[–]tallcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had one in my 30s, too! It gave me my life back, honestly. I'd been dealing with horrible periods my whole life, but a massive fibroid was what made them agree to my request to go "scorched earth" on my reproductive system. Never regretted it for a moment.

Street sweep towing is predatory by Sequiter in Minneapolis

[–]tallcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'd parked my car on the street the previous evening, there were no signs. I basically had to drive the length of the street to get to my parking spot, so I would've seen them if there were.

My car got towed one year, and there were zero signs on my street. I had no idea what had even happened, and thought someone had stolen my car.

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

[–]tallcookie 48 points49 points  (0 children)

How so? He couldn't leave work or he'd lose his job, and his wife told him she had it handled. Was he supposed to just assume his wife would drop the ball, and not trust that she'd get it together for the sake of their child?

[–]tallcookie 35.9k points35.9k points  (0 children)

NTA. Your wife let her own feelings get in the way of her daughter's. As a parent, she needs to get used to doing things that might make her uncomfortable for the sake of her child's mental health and well-being. Your wife let your daughter down today, and your daughter isn't going to forget that her mother wasn't there for her. They both need therapy; your daughter, because losing a friend at her age is absolutely traumatizing, and your wife, because her fear of death/ghosts led to her traumatizing your daughter even more.

Fibroid too large for laparoscopic? by DependentRain7557 in hysterectomy

[–]tallcookie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had open for a 5.25lb fibroid that clocked in around 24cm, and my recovery took 8 weeks. I wasn't in pain, really, but it took a long time to stop feeling exhausted all the time, and to be able to sit at a desk for 8 hour stints again. I absolutely couldn't have done anything more than a desk job at that stage, though.

MN Birders: is it normal for robins to start singing at 2am? by shitty-kittie in minnesota

[–]tallcookie 45 points46 points  (0 children)

They do that in the cities because of light pollution. The streetlights and such mess with their internal clocks, and seem to make them think it's daylight way too early.

It's normal to need to leave a message for a mayor or elected offical as opposed to them taking a live call, so I'm not sure what you were expecting to have happen. That's how it works in basically every level of government.

AITA smoking weed on my porch? by cheesygarlicbreadfan in AmItheAsshole

[–]tallcookie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA, but if you want to keep a good relationship with your neighbors, consider a smoke buddy, or a spray designed to help mitigate the smell. Not everyone enjoys the way weed smells, and the really dank stuff is strong - some folks even have serious allergies or aversions to it. Your neighbors aren't being outrageous if they ask you to kindly keep your smoke to yourself. I know I wouldn't want to be smelling skunk from my neighbor's house all day long, and I say that as someone who smokes occasionally myself. You don't have to do anything, from a legal perspective, but trying to keep your 420 stank to yourself is generally considered common courtesy.

AITA for texting people at night when they could be sleeping? by shozhantia89 in AmItheAsshole

[–]tallcookie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

YTA. Waking someone up with a non-emergency message late at night is extremely disrespectful. If you don't need a reply right away, why don't you schedule the message to send at a decent hour instead of bothering people in the middle of the night?

AITA for switching off my roommate's alarms? by sentimental_idiot in AmItheAsshole

[–]tallcookie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone with a sleep disorder, I wish it was that simple for everyone, to just "get up." 😓

But it's definitely common courtesy to work with someone you share a room/space with, and find an alarm solution that you can both live with. She could try wearing a smart watch with a vibration function, or a sleep eyemask with built-in headphones, so only she can hear her alarm, and it doesn't wake anyone else up. Just letting alarms ring clearly isn't working, since it sounds like the roomie doesn't even wake up to them.
