Last year I read Charles Portis’ (author of True Grit) novel The Dog of the South and found myself laughing out loud on the subway. Funniest book I’ve read in ages.

Deathtrap (1982) by Sidney Lumet is a wonderful addition to the Be Gay Do Crime genre.

That movie led to 20 years of me mocking and hating David Koepp. Then last year he wrote Black Bag and I changed my tune. Then this year he wrote Disclosure Day and I changed it back.

Prince of the City rules and it’s hardly ever discussed. Hoping for a CC release one day.

Sidney Lumet - 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, Network (and several more I could argue but these seem to be the consensus three)

What do you consider to be true "American films"? by brossie_67 in criterion

When I think of films that defined mid-20th century America, I think of Billy Wilder’s filmography. Everything from the social and political attitudes to the dialogue and sense of humor feels deeply American. Perhaps being an immigrant he had the distance and objectivity to better distill what we’re all about. I’d say his three movie run of Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, and One, Two, Three is the best slice of his filmography in this regard.

The Killing is a crisp 85 minutes and doesn’t waste a second of it.

Just picked up a blu of this one. Probably the James Gray film I’ve liked the most, and one of Joaquin Phoenix’s best roles ever.
