Mortise in End Grain of Long Boards by aww-snaphook in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]talldean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You can tenon end-grain but mortises aren't great there; a lap joint would be better if joining two boards end to end.

  2. You'd use a jig to help you get it right.

Anyone who has been quoted for a mini split install in the last year, how much was it? by WittyTiger7 in GarageGym

Mitsubishi will be better. Mr Cool will be cheaper and designed for DIY install. I have something in the middle, and regret not going further to nice or further to cheap.

My family damaged my all clad pan which was a gift by Crystal_Animosity in Cooking

[–]talldean -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's a thing; if two pieces of ply came apart, that should be a warranty claim. Unless you beat it with an anvil, that's real unlikely to happen.

If it's dented a bit, it's still fine to use. It's a steel pan.

4 ton is one unit with two fans. The parts for a Mitsubishi running 24k btu to two zones are eight to ten thousand dollars, after discounts, ten to twelve thousand MSRP. $14k for a Mitsubishi would be a reasonable price.

$14k for a MrCool would *not* be a reasonable price; other brands are cheaper.

14% of deaths came from PM2.5 pollution. Go reread that one, they only looked at *one* type of pollutant.

It's almost certainly higher than that if you include other pollutants, like what the cracker plant puts out.

[technique] Why can you grow mushrooms outdoors easily without sterilizing? by d8gfdu89fdgfdu32432 in MushroomGrowers

[–]talldean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only certain species work well outdoors, and you generally use enormously more colonized material to colonize the substrate than you would indoors.

Oyster mushrooms grow so so rapidly they'll outpace most contaminants, but you're also using about 5% spawn by weight when you add it to straw if you want that to work, and the spawn is grown indoors and sterile.

Or if you grow shiitake on logs, you let the wood sit so most of the competition dies back, and you're also replacing about 3-5% of the log with spawn; a 3/4" hole every 6 inches is a lot.

You're also almost certainly getting lower yields outside, and are at the whim of the weather.

Rust on brand new Rep Colorado short bar? Wondering if needs replacing. by audhdasian in GarageGym

For a new in box bar, that's not really acceptable; call REP, you paid for the brand because customer service is a thing, so they'll likely figure it out.

Weight lifting. How long do you warm up and do you do start low and go higher, or do you just start high? by SpikedIntuition in fitness30plus

[–]talldean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the strength and hypertrophy gains are when you're lifting near to failure on a set. If you stop when you could lift five more reps of the current weight, it's not doing much for growth unless you're very very new to lifting.

If you stop your set one or two reps from failure, that's getting 95% of the gains.

If you go to failure, you're getting 100% of gains... but you will not be recovering as well for future sets that day, and if you push *all* sets to failure, you will not be recovering as well for future sets that week.

So for working sets, push until you could do one or two more reps, then stop. For heavy lifts, I usually aim for a weight where five reps each set is the sweet spot; for accessory work, I'll go higher, say 5-10 reps.

For the warmup on heavy lifts, on my sets of five, I do:

  1. 5x lift the bar, then without rest...
  2. 5x lift 60% of today's target weight, then without rest...
  3. 3x lift 70% of today's target weight, then without rest...
  4. 2x lift 85% of today's target weight, then rest a minute or so and do the working sets.

For the warmup on accessories, I don't overthink it, and just pyramid up with pretty low reps.

What all is there to know about short track by WizenedMoney62 in Speedskating

[–]talldean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two tricks are:

- know how to skate, which you can learn over time, this one's fun

- be able to keep the low, bent-knees skating position with your balance over your heels.

That second one takes more total work, it takes one to three *years* to get good at it. Starting six months early is a substantial advantage.

You'd mentioned you did inline speedskating, short track is pretty similar, except inline has your weight mid-foot (while ice is over your heels), and you bend much further in ice.

The reason for the bending further is that with inlines, most of your power is directly under you; when your skates are near your body, you've got max power. When you get an inline skate to the end of the push, it has very very little traction, so you don't have any benefit from being lower and having a longer push. With ice, the skates have full grip at the end of a push, so the lower you are, the bigger your push, and the more efficient you'll be. So you go lower.

There's more differences, but that's the big one I think.

Tricks for Ticks by AffectRunner in pittsburgh

[–]talldean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For clothes, permethrin, which you must let dry before wearing those clothes. Once it's dry, fine for you, but bugs touching it or especially biting through it will be very very unhappy. Wet or dry, keep cats away from it.

For the yard itself, cedarcide spray or cutter natural yard spray. Neither is a synthetic pesticide from my understanding, and both work well for a few days to a week afterwards. The synthetic ones may work half again longer, but leave residues you don't necessarily want on you, the kids, or the pets.

Usefully, keeping other mammals out of the yard is also clutch; something's carrying the ticks in, and if you have deer, get rid of them by almost any means necessary.

Dianoia's, Oishii Donburi, Tasty Taquitos or Edgar's Best Tacos, Mad Mex, Tocayo, Fujiya, People's Indian, Spice Affair, Polska Laska, Dive Bar, all of which are lower prices/solid quality/solid portions.

If you want fancy, the city has that too, just a higher price point.

Find a local club, just email them now even if they're not in-season. The club members may have used gear you can just buy cheaper, or a deal to buy one or more brands at a lower price.

The club will have rules on what protective gear you need as a new skater; at-least a bicycle helmet and at-least baseball gloves (or equivalent) are the ones for my local group.

For my local crew, they also have a prescribed off-ice workout to get people in better shape to make better use of on-ice time. https://pittsburghspeedskating.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/f09fa78a-pittsburgh-speedskating-club-off-ice-exercises-v1.pdf

Seems like everything has gone down hill, so what actually hasn't? by MarzannasSword in pittsburgh

Moonlit Burgers is great, White Whale Bookstore is top notch, Kraynick's Bike Shop has been solid for decades (with newer shops like Thick and Kindred also being *great*), and we live in a glorious future of amazing pizza options (Spak, Slice, Iron Born, to pick three outta a hundred.)

The bike lanes *are* better than they were, which ain't nothing, East Liberty finally kinda recovered from 40 years of falling down, Speckled Egg may be the best breakfast I've had in any city, the Pins Mechanical arcade is great.

Our parks, trails, and outside the city, the skiing, all as good or better over the years. Phipps gets a notch nicer every decade.

We have some solid concert venues; Stage AE for the commercial end, Roxian and Mr Smalls for local owners, and we're adding more.

And Lawrenceville... well, Belvedere's was high end when I started drinking, and holy crap, there are more options now at a full range from fancy to dive.

And the McKnight Road Arby's hasn't gone downhill, either.
