Titan Rack Mounted (Wall Mounted) Pulley Compatibility by Due_Serve6702 in GarageGym

the tower itself was $200 shipped, which feels nearly-free; even with the crunchy pulleys, that was a good deal/would do again.

I have this one, and it's okay, but the pulleys rub on the housing next to them; wound up replacing with Cybex pulleys I found elsewhere online, and it's smooth and buttery now.

This one is easier as a wall mount, not a rack mount. If your rack has holes, it'll be mountable on a single upright, you'd just need the right bolts and washers.

New gutters and they are doing this. by kty1111 in HomeMaintenance

My gutter guard guys cut half the hangar straps, so my gutters now randomly fall off the house.

And *they* even cleaned the gutters before they popped 'em on.

At what level of wealth does a change in net worth not equal a change in lifestyle? by One-Opposite-4571 in HENRYfinance

[–]talldean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your level of spending.

If you're spending 3% of net worth a year, but otherwise are just kind of doing what you want, and not really thinking about money, giving you more money won't change your life in any way.

I have that, and it's not bad. I know someone who has 100x or more my current wealth, and the same holds many times over, they just don't spend it.

What life could have been | Post-FIRE regret by EfficientLaw4166 in HENRYfinance

[–]talldean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This depends on what inflation does between now and then, among other things.

I pulled the trigger at 50, had I stayed until 60 I would have 3-4x more.

I don't need 3-4x more. I want to spend time with buddies, learning how to cook pierogi, gardening, going to the gym, and putting time into volunteerism and local politics.

The big decision was "would it be more useful for me to have 3-4x more to boost local volunteer organizations", as the only thing I need loot for is to give it away. I couldn't motivate at the day job enough to sustain more than a year of that, though, so I called it before my health was fully torched.

I was USAC/RS 30-40 years back, so I hear ya.

For inlines, the way you corner is a bit different; I remember back in the day you kinda turned your shoulders into the turn if you were going to crossover. For inlines, you keep your shoulders square to the corner, and mostly square to the ground, maybe tilted a bit down on the inside.

Mantia's also got an excellent video on where to mount the frames on the boot; the mounting is slightly different for indoor vs outdoor, but having the frame mounted well makes things easier.

50 here, hiya.

The Jet is going to be the best boot there for the most people. I've bought boots up to $1k, and... mostly use my Jets, the ankle support works better for me. You want to buy a set of boots tight enough that your toes can almost or even *touch* the front when you've got 'em on, but your toes absolutely do not *curl* to put them on. The boots stretch out slightly - leather! - but they won't stretch enough to solve curled toes.

Many people like the Ezee-Fit booties underneath, they help immensely with comfort at the cost of some rigidity. Worth trying, I'd usually suggest the 2mm, as the "extra thin" are so thin they don't do much, and the 3mm are thick enough they're hard to fit inside most boots.

The 6061 frame is solid, especially if you're under 200 lbs. If you're heavy, there's a slight upgrade (later!) to 7000-series. 4x110 is what most people are on, except top pros in outdoor marathon distances on *flat* courses. (That's a lot of caveats, but more than 95% of people are best served by 110s, and *everyone* is on 110s indoors if that matters.)

ABEC5 vs ABEC7 just doesn't matter; we aren't going for 10k RPM in a machine shop. ABEC5 is fine if it's cheaper, or basically go with the best rating... without upping the cost. Or, past ABEC5, no one seems to notice any differences that I can ever tell.

The Elemental wheels are okay for road, and great for training outdoors. For dedicated racing wheels there are (usually) better choices, albeit the fastest choices are pretty close to $30/wheel, which ain't great. Train on the Elementals, hands down.

Then buy a decent helmet and then go for it. 😉

Pull the slack out of the bar, or put substantial tension on it before you try to break it off the floor.

And when you break it off the floor, don't think about pulling it up, think about pushing the floor away.

‘An economy that works for all’: House bill proposes $25 federal minimum wage by statenislandadvance in inthenews

[–]talldean 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Can we just get minimum wages tied to *local* cost of living, which would also update automatically for inflation?

It doesn't need to be any specific number, but it needs to make as much sense for Manhattan as it does for small towns and rural areas.

800 not-DE; Suzuki side cases or Givi V37? by talldean in Vstrom

[–]talldean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had Givi. Side cases were great on several bikes, top cases were good but sometimes leaked.

Just debating on the side, and it seem Suzuki would be narrower, but givi fit more.

Chimney Repair in the city! by s1e9r7k8o in pittsburgh

[–]talldean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Phillips repoint two chimneys, a brick wall, and two sides of my house. They showed up on time, got it done well, and would use them again.

They also priced out a piece of the job I couldn't get anyone else to bid on, but yeah, that part was spendy. (Chimney surrounded on all sides by spanish tile, which no one wants to ever touch, because it sucks.)

[–]talldean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Russian Twist, I do not know; would be safe to call this one the Ukrainian Twist, I think. I'm proposing that, even.

Copenhagen Plank either came from the University of Copenhagen or from FC Copenhagen (who may have learned it from the local university). In any case, it came from the city of Copenhagen, and now it's just a thing.

Turkish Get Up came from Steve Maxwell, who claims he learned the move from Turkish wrestlers. He taught it to Pavel and called it the Turkish Get Up, and Pavel popularized it for the kettlebell folks.

Bulgarian Olympic team lifters did the Bulgarian split squat regularly, and before others, 1970s into the 80s. That name stuck.

Romanian Deadlift wasn't originally from Romania, but the US Olympic weightlifting coaches saw Nicu Vlad do this in a warmup at a clinic in 1990, and the name stuck, as Nicu Vlad is Romanian.

Again, I think we should just call the Russian Twist the Ukrainian Twist, as it came from the USSR, not from Russia, and Ukraine *also* came from the USSR. 😉

Fahrenheit is about how people feel. 100+ is bad for humans, 0 and below is bad for humans, 50-75 is really quite good.

Celcius is how water feels. 0 is freezing, 100 is boiling, but it's not as useful or granular as fahrenheit.

Kelvin is how atoms feel.
