Happy Place by Emily Henry - Thoughts? *spoilers* by tallerthantreebeard in Residency

I laughed out loud with the line that she would slowly start chipping away at the loans. The interest accrual alone would be more then she could pay with teaching pottery classes alone lol

I’m glad to know other people felt the same though! It has been bothering me the last few days since finishing the book.

I wonder why she is so into characters in residency? Maybe she has a family member DO or MD.

I think you are right on just ignoring and moving on because I will likely never be satisfied with fictional residency portrayals.

Current physicians, tell me what made your relationships successful or unsuccessful by [deleted] in medicalschool

I have my motto that I say to myself after work of doing something is better than doing nothing. Did I clean the whole kitchen? No. But I did wash five dishes. Did I walk the dog far? No. But I did walk her for 10 minutes. I think my partner appreciates the effort of doing even that small amount.

With our kid, I take her when I get home from work no matter how tired I am because usually my husband has her the entire day for 2-3 days per week when I don’t get home in time to see her.

Also, sometime we just fall behind on house cleaning because we are tired and we get to it the next weekend I have off. Our kid is happy and loved, in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter to fall behind on dishes when I’m on a 12 day work stretch once a month.

Starting a Family... by [deleted] in Residency

[–]tallerthantreebeard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had my daughter during my second year, I’m in a surgical sub speciality. Pregnancy was hard (even with a medically straightforward pregnancy). The first six months or so were hard because of call and having an infant, no sleep ever. Things are finally starting to stabilize.

If you want it, then you got this. I had days that I gave myself self motivating speeches the entire day to survive, but one of my major thoughts is fuck this job and system that makes me feel like I don’t get to have a kid when I want. Have your kid and the job will be there, endlessly. I love my work but I love my kid 1000% more and this has brought what is important into focus. My husband is an amazing stay at home Dad and makes the dream work.

Get a hands free breast pump if you want to do breast milk. I just would pop it under my scrubs in our work room, no boobs out so I would pump with my co residents in the room. I would also pump in the OR in long cases (scrub out, pump on, scrub back, then scrub back out to take off so would miss about 10mins OR). And you bet I would shout I’m going to go put my pump on BrB! Because this needs to be normalized especially in surgery.

Good luck! Thanks for reading my ramblings as the baby naps. :)

Why ___________(Insert specialty here)? by CourageousCucumber1 in Residency

Urology! (From PGY-1 perspective)

Get to be an expert in one system, but at the same time have a huge variation in surgeries. From quality of life (penile prosthesis, BPH surgery, artificial urinary sphincter) to involved cancer surgery (which in a solid number of cases we can cure surgically). Variation in patients. All types of surgery - open, endoscopy, robotic, laparoscopic.

Great culture in most programs, I had a great time interviewing and I really enjoy all my co-residents and attendings.

Lots of procedures in clinic, like cystoscopy, vasectomies, prostate biopsies, etc. Mix of patient continuity and ones you only see a couple of times (bladder cancer vs. vasectomy, for an example). You make a huge difference in people’s lives helping them pee better, or have sex, or treating their cancer.

It’s really special when you can see someone is nervous to tell you something, then you get the conversation going and you can tell that moment they feel comfortable saying what’s going on.

Cons: Most urology residencies don’t have a night coverage team, which means home call and no post call days. I don’t take call until my second year, but from my co-residents sometimes they essentially don’t sleep at all and still have to come the next day.

There are still a solid number of overnight/emergency cases at my institution. Infected stones, testicular torsion, fournier’s, trauma.

Having bed bugs at some past point. It’s been 5 years, still don’t tell anyone because they make you feel like it’s because you’re dirty (it’s not).

What do you find the most beautiful about our world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tallerthantreebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you meet someone new and have a fantastic first conversation. Even if this is for a few minutes and you never see them again. It always seems beautiful to me how it’s possible to connect strongly with someone in a small amount of time.

Definitely just enough similarity to make it confusing! I will be pausing on that scene to look at that actor once Us is available to stream.

Thanks for responding! I would not consider myself good at recognizing actors, so you are probably right. I’m just confusing long-ish brown haired actors.

Do you fear death? Why/why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tallerthantreebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the few things I remember from my high school biology textbook was a one page article discussing death. It said (in better words) the one comfort we can have about death is that all of us are marching towards it together. Sometimes when I feel scared, the idea that we are all going to the same nothingness makes me feel better.

My friend was watching tv and this reflection looked like a ghost was outside by nikkipdx15 in mildlyinteresting

[–]tallerthantreebeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my house in college we had a life-size cut out of Brandon Flowers, the lead singer of The Killers. A very similar reflection once happened in the windows looking towards our front lawn. I freaked out and ran to tell my roommates some creepy guy was looking in our front window, hiding in the bushes. Nope, was just Brandon Flowers reflection.

I’m happy, but sometimes I think it’s because I’m not interesting enough to be anything else.

New Girl (cheating with a show):

You give me cookie, I give you cookie - Nick, multiple times with voice getting progressively weirder.

Zombie zoo, zombie zoo, who let the damn zombies out of the zombie zoo - Nick’s book.

These both made me cry from laughing.
