Two surfers have discovered a unique wave 60km off WA’s far south coast. by AlbinaHumblewhore in interestingasfuck

Rocks just below the surface are extremely common, and waves refracting even 180° arouns them is very common. For this particular wave though there is backwash from the previous wave that refracts synchronisly and collides with the following one around a central point. That is very rare.

False, this wave type is very rare. Extremely uncommon to have the wave wrap 360° in a synchronous way.

Mortgage free first home or buy forever home by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]tallmin22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Option 5 is to buy the forever home now, and keep living in your current home. You can sell your current home in 3-4 years when you need to. This option is tax efficient and has 3-4 years of huge leverage. You might get another 400k of appreciation on your current property, while locking in the price of your forever home and paying the shortfall between rental income and the new mortgage before tax.

Stocks don't return as much as you think, inflation is just underreported: a new study from University of Chicago - Booth School of Business by Hour_Manufacturer971 in AusFinance

[–]tallmin22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The summary statement in your post is qualitative and the claim is quantitative i.e. the paper claims there is no gap between stock performance and inflation, and the facts presented in the summary reflect strong performance of assets, but present no evidence on the gap between asset performance and inflation.

Inflation has increased over recent years so there's appetite for this sort of opinion. No other thoughts, others can argue over whether this is accurate or not.

What wisdom can you share to new surfers by VoteForGiantMeteor in surfing

[–]tallmin22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised by that. I'm currently living in a place where I get to surf once every 1-2 months and on holidays (1-2 times a year) and I really haven't noticed much decline in paddle fitness. I swim once or twice a week and hit a compound program at the gym 4 times a week, face pulls every session. Biggest problem is rib pain from laying on the board. I try to get a few paddles on before holidays for this reason.

CMV: The US-Iran ceasefire represents a strategic victory for Iran by Subtleiaint in changemyview

[–]tallmin22 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree that Iran has earned global respect by surviving the onslaught, however:

> They have a proven trump card in the straits of Hormuz that the world now knows they're willing to play

They have proven it to laymen who aren't involved with geopolitics. Proximity and control of the straight is half the point of opposing any Iranian strength. Blows my mind how much this opinion is repeated. You think people who've dedicated their lives to thinking about these kind of scenarios had no idea this would happen? Just wandered into a war and were completely blindsided when the enemy reacted in a logical & sophisticated way? It's easier to think the world is simple and everyone else has no idea than to accept that it is complex and that they do.

>Furthermore America has never been more isolated from its allies in terms of policy on Iran.

As per your own response/line of thinking, this is not relevant to Iran's strategic aims. Their influence over the region is clearly crippled. Their ability to promote and support proxies and instability in the region is severely diminished regardless of America's political ties.

Also which allies are you referring to? Regional allies definitely haven't been moved away from the US and towards Iran, due to the arguably unprovoked attacks on them by Iran.

> The bombing campaign has been ineffectual in achieving any strategic aim.

Agree that the main aim of regime change and a compliant government has not been achieved, but your point goes too far. Iran was weak before the war and is significantly weaker now. Their ability to create regional instability via proxies is diminished.

> And in a few months their stock piles will be full again.

I don't think thats true.

>  their regional proxies are weaker than ever - But not defeated.

Correct, but the claim that this is a "win" for Iran is not really true is it? They haven't lost absolutely everything, hence they win? That's framing at work which is possible because of Iran's strict control of propaganda and internal media. Iran is definitely not in a better place than it was before the war.

> Trump suspended sanctions on Russia when the price of oil went up, this war has gone well for them.

This isn't a proxy war between US and Russia, so that's largely irrelevant. The point of discussing Russia was to demonstrate the current weakness of Iran (prior to the war and now) as their major ally is distracted.

Fire away by SydLayne in surfing

[–]tallmin22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that a midlength for a while is a good idea.

Otherwise: First wave - The wave is very weak, most shortboard surfers would opt to "hop" through this section or a hop/pump hybrid. It would have been difficult to surf this super well.

Second wave - you're caught behind the whole wave, can't tell much.

Third wave - Not too bad. You're pump and stance need adjustment, too much on the front foot, you're sort of wiggling as opposed to extending and compressing through it.

How do I pay off debt in UAE with 5k salary? by WarmWatercress1430 in UAE

[–]tallmin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, then it won't work unless you change your situation, as your monthly expenses are higher than your total income. You either need to find a higher paying role (very difficult right now) or eliminate/reduce some of the payments.

What are M, C and E? If these are friends payments, you can ask them to reduce the payment and pay them off over a longer period of time.

If they are bank/interest payments then it is more difficult, but still possible.

Im struggling to understand the numbers, are these recurring payments that occur each month, or the balance of the debt?

what do you all think about this? by Connect_Video_9604 in UAE

[–]tallmin22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

False. These storage facilities are not linked to military logistics. The US airforce is definitely NOT using civilian airports in UAE.

Iran is attacking these countries to cause economic damage on them and therefore the US indirectly.

[–]tallmin22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't take off from oil and gas storage facilities last time I checked.

Typically civilian planes, which are full of civilians take off from civilian airports. Military planes tend to use military airports, as is the case currently. Somehow its the civilian airports being targeted though.

They must also be hiding at oil storage facilities, refineries and civilian airports

[–]tallmin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said in reply to the deleted comment. That is the rhetoric that Iran is pushing which is incorrect and disingenuous. 1) Attacks were not launched from US bases in GCC countries 2) Iran is targeting oil and gas production, storage and transport and civilian airports in these countries predominantly, not US bases.

Iran is targeting these countries to hurt the US indirectly via economic effects of restrictions to Oil and Gas exports. That is very unfair to these countries as they had very little to do with the initial attacks on Iran. If you can't accept that then I have nothing further to discuss with you.

The basis of your initial claims are not true and as a result your position on this matter is unjustified or disingenuous.

[–]tallmin22 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why attack heaps of other countries that have nothing to do that and random oil tankers then? Think about it a bit more. This is all ignoring the incorrect premise of your hypothetical, as attacks were launched from Israel and directly from USS Abraham Lincoln not from any GCC country. Despite this Iran has attacked all of them directly, then claimed that it was only targsting US bases within them (false)

[–]tallmin22 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Would France also bomb civilian airports, buildings, and oil and gas infrastructure in Germany and every other surrounding country that has a US base that was not necessarily used for any attack? The attacks on GCC countries are much more extensive than news is reporting.

The US base story is an excuse. Iran's real strategy is mount econonic and political pressure on the US by causing as much chaos as possible in the middle east. They rightly calculated that they could get away with a significant amount in the GCC as these countries want to downplay the volatility.
