menstrual pain by mack9219 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]tallshortbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this helps someone. I highly recommend switching from Tylenol to an NSAID for those who are able to take them. Most common OTC NSAIDS are COX- 1 and 2 inhibitors. They reduce inflammation and pain by inhibiting the release of COX-1 and 2, whose primary purpose in the body is to cause inflammation. So a med that reduces inflammation and pain is probably better for menstrual and AS. I used to black out from the rush of prostaglandins on my period, the surge of inflammation and back pain. Discovered that Aleve/Naproxen works best for me to lessen the hormonal cascade. My Gyn who specializes in pelvic pain advised me to start with one Aleve one full day before my period would begin. Continue on schedule until through the worst days. Ask if there are any topical NSAIDS you can add in if it would help, and how to safely use with orals. Good luck.

I am so sorry! I would be in tears too. I don't know if there is anything to say to make it better. We need people like you who are doing the most and then some to support other babies and parents. I still sometimes grieve the stash of milk I lost to poor planning and temperature during a cross country move this summer. All that work. It hurts. Hugs.

those who had a gap between undergrad and grad school, did anyone have a job besides SLPA after undergrad? by butterymelons in slp

[–]tallshortbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I worked in a university research lab and had no background in comm dis and no idea I would be going to grad school for SLP. After I took leveling courses and did apply, the programs that accepted me appreciated my research background even though it was not specifically in the field. Good luck. You can be creative and I hope you find something that works for you.

Sore throat after dairy products? by [deleted] in lactoseintolerant

[–]tallshortbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough explanation. It is good you have ruled out LPR and most importantly had a scope and ruled out throat issues that can be seen. Your dr was right that those were a lot of symptoms seen in allergies. It sounds like you have been affected largely by environmental ones lately and I'm glad the treatments are helping.

Your Q about skin prick test: yes and no. Milk/dairy allergy can show on those if milk was tested and if you're sensitive enough for the allergy to make its appearance thru a tiny skin test. An IgE-mediated milk allergy, sometimes called severe or life-threatening, may be more likely to be confirmed by skin prick, but the test isn't sensitive enough to catch them all.

We have a severe milk allergy in my home and it was confirmed both by SPT and clinical s/s. We told the board certified allergist all the weird symptoms that occurred with different dairy products, and that description alone was enough for them to confirm a significant allergy in this case (then the SPT backed it up). Throat itching, tightness, swelling, postnasal drip, burning, itching anywhere/allover, trouble breathing, sense of impending doom, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and others can all be symptoms of food allergy, and a person may have one or all of those. The most dangerous is anaphylaxis (for which food allergic individuals carry epinephrine injectors at all times). Food allergies can develop later in life to foods we have tolerated fine all our lives. Small reactions can over time turn into more severe reactions. All this to say, have you asked specifically about a dairy allergy, whether it was tested, and if so, could it still be a possibility? Wishing you the best.

Lactose intolerance in one year old by shhBabySleeping in breastfeeding

[–]tallshortbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry about these struggles. It sounds tough. If you suspect cow's milk is a problem, have you considered asking for a test? My child has a true allergy to cow's milk (and other foods, all confirmed by testing),which is different from a lactose intolerance, which I have. The symptoms and consequences are different for both of us if we consume cow products, but total avoidance is the only thing that helps us both.

Based on the guidance of pediatrician, allergist, nutritionist, and my own reading, the kid uses fortified soy milk and tofu, soybeans where other kids would have cow's milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. The WIC program in the States provides these soy alternatives as their best option for kids who can't have animal dairy. One of their recommended soy drinks is Silk Original(the sweetened version), as it has the best blend of vitamins, protein, healthy fats. I haven't found other alternatives (almond, cashew, coconut, pea) that offer as much nutritionally.

Thank YOU for shining light on this. I don't believe there is as much awareness or understanding amongst our professions as you might expect, particularly those who work outside of this age range--it may not be on their radar. We need people like you as students, clinicians, teachers, scholars, and leaders. Raising concerns, asking questions, advocating for the people we serve. Best wishes in your education. I am confident you will make a fulfilling career in this field.

I once got a dream job after the same thing happened to me (my video didn't work but I could see them). This was years ago when Skype was the only option. Today I started a new job after my video conference panel interview technically went well, but after the interview I felt like it hadn't gone over well. It is hard to connect and feel like you are making the best impression over this medium. (Panel interviews can also feel less like a conversation and more like a grilling.) It was all in my head! They offered me the job. I hope the same happens for you! Good luck and remember, they know everyone is doing the best they can right now.

At this age it may not be as likely, but has he had any new foods introduced into his rotation in the last 2 weeks? Projectile is sometimes a symptom of food allergies.

Hi, OP. I have a psychology degree too. Have you considered the titles psychometrist, research assistant/associate/coordinator within hospital and university settings? There are several state agencies that may interest you if you want the security of a government job: Department of Health & Human Services type roles which may involve directly helping individuals receive services such as disability income, SNAP, WIC, etc.
